100th Anniversary of the Creation of the Typeface, The Project to Renew Shueitai for the Heisei Era

Shueitai has been in familiar use in Japan as a standard typeface for over 100 years, and this application is a record of the typeface development undertaken in the Shueitai renewal initiative, called The Project to Renew Shueitai for the Heisei Era.
The application offers an introduction to the 7-year typeface development process involving 120,000 characters in 10 different typefaces, beginning with the challenges presented by Shueitai prior to renewal, through how designers improved the typeface, to the precise experiments conducted by engineers in order to convert Shueitai into a commercial reality.
The content-rich application also helps you further deepen your knowledge of Shueitai by including a history of the typeface since its origin in 1876, along with interviews with designers.

Chapter 1, Shuei Mincho, and Designer Interviews are offered free of charge.
Chapter 2, Shuei Sho-go Mincho, Chapter 3, Shuei KakuGo, and Shuei MaruGo, and others are offered on a fee-paying basis.

The newly developed application is a digitalized version of the hard copy book 『一〇〇年目の書体づくり―「秀英体 平成の大改刻」の記録』 (100th Anniversary of the Creation of the Typeface, The Project to Renew Shueitai for the Heisei Era).

Shueitai is a DNP original typeface that has seen ongoing development since the Meiji era, which began in 1868. The typeface has developed a very good reputation among book creators and readers as a beautiful typeface that is easy to read.

In the Shueitai renewal initiative, called The Project to Renew Shueitai for the Heisei Era, that DNP has undertaken since 2005 as part of the celebrations for the 130th anniversary of the founding of the company, we have carried out development with an awareness of the existing usage environment and user needs, with the intention of passing down this high quality typeface to the next generation.
