Clyfford Still was one of a group of American artists working in the middle of the twentieth century who created paintings in a style called Abstract Expressionism. These artists did not paint things people could recognize. Instead, they tried to represent their emotions, thoughts, and feelings. Clyfford Still found that the best way to show his inner ideas was through a variety of colors and abstract or unrecognizable shapes and forms.
