Ashdown Forest, the largest free public access space in the South East of England, lies at the heart of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. For nearly 2000 years the Forest was also exploited for the iron industry, leading to the creation of the heathland landscape that covers two thirds of the area.
