About Baseball/Softball Pitch Count

Now supporting 43 State High School and Little League pitch count limit programs!

At Big Time Coach, we use our apps for each-and-every Game, Practice, Tryout, and Draft that we participate in. Our apps are continually used and refined to put the tools we've come to rely on in your hands.

Big Time Coach Pitch Counter is designed to track pitches and innings for players of all ages. As arm injuries increase among youth pitchers, Big Time Coach has developed an application that will help coaches and parents manage the days of rest needed. Little League International days rest rules have been incorporated into the app to help coaches become more knowledgeable about the game requirements. Users may also create custom days rest for tournament play, other youth league rules and the ability to utilize the most current research to best ensure the safety of all youth pitchers.

Beyond managing days rest you have the ability to track the number of innings and pitches thrown by player. An often-overlooked aspect of tracking pitches is the number of pitches thrown during a practice or Bull Pen session. These pitches thrown in the practice setting can play a critical role in adding to the risk of arm injuries to pitchers. Big Time Coach Pitch Counter addresses this gap, and provides new insight into the process of pitching, tracking and rest.

Features include:

• Innovative Pitch Counter --- keeps track of balls, strikes, total, pitches, total outs and strike percentage. Current batters count, outs, and runners on base are included to help the coach know the count and assist with pitch selection decisions.

• Seeded Days Rest --- thresholds based on Little League Int. and State High School rules cover ages 7 through 18, and can be applied to the Pitch Counter to automatically track the required days of rest.

• Custom Days Rest Creation --- ability to set custom days rest rules to meet the needs of tournament play, league rules, rehabilitation and to keep current on the latest medical research.

• Player Tracking --- setup players to track pitches thrown in games, bull pens, or any other side session.

• Simple Bull Pen Counter --- track balls, strikes, total pitches and strike percentage to aid coaches in getting players ready for game situations. Use the strike percentage to understand when pitchers ready for game situations.

• Total Pitch View --- see total number of pitches thrown in the combination of games and bull pens to ensure coaches and parents have the complete view, and understand the impact on player performance.

• Import / Export / Email / AirDrop Bull Pens and Game Records --- send bull pen and game information to other coaches or parents who are tracking pitchers rest and performance.

• Game Summary View --- provides a list of all pitchers in a game, total pitches, number of innings and current days rest requirement. Tapping a row provides full detail for the pitchers outing.

• Track Pitches of Opponents --- in-game tracking to help devise lineup strategies during the game. Track opponent’s pitchers in tournament or league games to make in-game decisions for line-up changes.

• Pitching Eligibility Tracking --- you may track pitchers eligibility, and gather signatures right at the field. Export the pitching eligibility form and the signatures are included, or use Eligibility Detail for time stamped signatures. Includes "Threshold" counts.

• Estimated Pitch Speed Calculator --- Check pitch speed during games and bull pens. Keep history of top pitch speed for bull pens.

• Pitch Fact Graphs -- review graphs of pitching percentages and pitching totals for each player along with average and goal thresholds.

• Use Spotlight to Search for Pitchers by name to view game and total pitching records.

• AirDrop games, bull pens, and players to team staff and parents.

• Team Snap and SportsEngine® Integration!

Updates / Bug Fixes

Our coaches found an issue with the new Group Bull Pen function that would not clean up properly. They also asked if we could move directly to the pitchers listing once the group bull pen has been dismissed. We have updated the application to take care of those requests.

Also addressed a few minor bugs that we found in our review of the app.

Updates, New Functionality, and Bug Fixes

- Updated app for support of iOS 12 and new iPhones

- Fixed bugs in "Flip Counter" view to ensure counts are not lost between pitchers when using this function. Note: the current pitcher(s) (indicated by blue bar on summary view) will be used in the Flip Counter.

- Changed "Game Situation" management. In previous versions there were dialogs that asked if you wanted to setup a situation any new pitcher after the first one. We've changed the pitcher work flow so that:

1) Pitch Counter will check for any existing game situations on the last pitcher of record, and give you the option of applying that game situation to the new pitcher

2) You may switch between pitchers and 'inherit' the count of the current pitcher - this covers the situation when a new pitcher is brought in while the last pitcher moves to a position and returns back to the mound.

This process or "workflow" works much better in the game as you no longer have to set up the situation. Simply "inherit" the current situation from the pitcher leaving the mound.

- Added "Current Pitcher" indicator in summary view. This allows you to know which pitcher on the list is the current pitcher, even when you do complex in-inning switches.

New Function - Bull Pen Groups

It's taken quite a while for use to determine the best way to meet this request, but we have now determined how we can leverage the "counter flipper" function from games for Bull Pens.

To recap: we have received a number of requests for a way to track multiple pitchers in a single bull pen. The description of a typical session is that a coach takes two or more players aside for a Bull Pen Session and wants to track pitches and strike percentage for each. The new functionality allows you or your coaches to great an on-the-fly bull pen group with as many pitchers as is required.

Once created, the Pitch Counter will arrange all of the pitchers in a set of counters that you can simply swipe left or right to get to the next pitcher. This makes it simple to go back and forth between pitchers in the session, and have everything tracked when the session is over.

We've been using these new updates in real-life game situations and hope that you find them as effective as we do.!

iOS 11 and iPhone X Ready

As we do every year, we've updated functionality to work with iOS 11 so that you may upgrade to this exciting new iOS version with confidence.

Though we don't have an iPhone X yet (hopefully we get to pre-order!), we have done a 1st pass on the views to ensure they work with the rounded corners of the display, and the new "ears" at the top of the phone. High School Days Rest / Pitch Count Limits

With the advent of Pitch Count limits for High School baseball, we have researched and found program information for 43 states. The programs vary from state to state, and as a result we have created one rest type for each of these states. Simply select the rest type for your state, and days rest will be calculated for you automatically.

Game Summary Updates

Because of all the functions you need in the Game Summary view, we've gone through it and simplified things. The completion status has been changed to a switch, Mound Distance, Game Date/Time, and Rest Type selection have been consolidated into a single 'set' list. Touch the 'Set' button do display all of these functions.

Because of the addition of 43 rest types, the rest type select has changed to an indexed list that will slide over the Game Summary view. This will make it must simpler to chose the Rest Type you wish to apply to your game.

AirDrop Games, Players, Bull Pens

Coaches often want to share pitch count information with other coaches on the team. To make this easier, we've added AirDrop capabilities so that you can simply 'AirDrop' what you want to share with another BTC Pitch Counter user. This should make things easier for coaches to review information and collaborate on pitching plans during the season. AirDrop is available in the following view:

- Pitcher Summary
- Pitcher Detail (touch the new task button [gear] to display this choice)
- Game Summary

Pitcher Merging

After working with SportsEngine® and TeamSnap® integrations we found that it was not unusual for us to add a pitcher, track pitch counts for games and/or bull pens, and then import the same pitcher through an integration. In those cases we would have two pitchers. As a result, we created a new merge function that allows you to "merge" the records from the first pitcher into the the 2nd (imported through integration) pitcher.

It's very simple to use, just select the "Merge Player" function from the pitcher task list, find the player you wish to merge records from, and Pitch Counter will take care of the rest.

SportsEngine® Updates

We found that in some cases teams to select rosters from were not being filtered based on the most current season. This has been addressed to ensure you only see the current teams (active season and sub-season) from your SportsEngine® site.

We also found a bug where refreshed / updated pitchers could be duplicated, and this was eliminated.

TeamSnap® Updates

We found a similar bug in the TeamSnap® interface where pitchers being refreshed / updated could be duplicated.

Now with SportsEngine® Integration!

This is another beta feature - but we wanted to get this out to all of our users for testing. If you encounter any problems or issues, please report them to the BTC Support team through our forum or email.

Coaches have been asking for it, and we've now been able to add SportsEngine integration into Game Planner. If your league is using SportsEngine, you'll now be able to create new teams from SportsEngine and import all your players and team staff directly into the app.

This makes adding a team very fast and efficient. Once a team is linked to SportsEngine® you may update the team members or add new players or staff with a simple update.

If your league does not have BTC apps setup for access yet, have your administrator contact SportsEngine® to setup access for BTC apps.

We're really looking forward to our new functionality and integration with SportsEngine®!

Bug Fixes and Updates

Just a few under-the-hood changes that while not apparent, make the app more stable for you. For those interested in the technical side, we've updated our Swift implementations to be Swift 3.0 compliant. What that means is that the app will now not have compatibility issues with new Swift based features down the road.

Now with TeamSnap Integration!

This is a beta feature - but we wanted to get this out to all of our users for testing. If you encounter any problems or issues, please report them to the BTC Support team through our forum or email. Links to those are available under the 'More' tab, and the 'Extras' menu item.

Coaches have been asking for it, and we've now been able to add TeamApp integration into Pitch Counter. If you are a TeamSnap member, you'll now be able to 'bulk load' pitchers from your team in TeamSnap.

This makes adding pitchers from a team supper simple and efficient so you can get on with counting pitches!

We're really looking forward to our new functionality and integration with TeamSnap!

1.8.2
Sep 8, 2016
After another weekend round of tournaments - we received feedback about a few functions and made updates to get those fixed.

Updates

- Fixed a bug in pitch counters where choosing double play that ends an inning would not clear runners.
- Confirmation labels on the flip counter were not having proper background colors set after a change in contrast
- Updated the Pitching Summary on the counters. Home/Visitor information was not being presented correctly.
- Moved detail views in the pitch counter to 'tabs' on the right or left side of the display. The tabs will slide in a view of either the pitching summary (right tab - displays summary of all players in the game), or if rest type has been set... Days Rest detail (league age, current days rest, days rest thresholds) for the pitcher being tracked. This really cleans up the counter view and allows for a much larger presentation of the information.
- Created a 'Quick Player Add' button for the game player view which allows you to quickly add a pitcher to the list of stored pitchers for team selected. This removed the need to pre-define all of your teams pitchers which is not always possible. By adding players 'on-the-fly' you may immediately begin tracking pitching history without interrupting the flow of the game.
- Made changes to underlying code in preparation for iOS 10

More support for teams!

Per our coaches suggestions, we've added even more support for teams and players in teams. This really helps when setting up games or adding pitchers during games. Here are the new features:

- Pitcher Selection | Teams Defaulted: when you have added a team name to either home or visitor, Pitch Counter will try to present just the list of pitchers for that team when the 'Select to Link' button is used. The default will make it simple to select from the filtered list without having to change the list of teams

- Team Selection - since you've gone to the trouble of setting up pitchers with team names, we've made it simple to use those same team names in your games. Just select from the list - or create a new team as before on-the-fly.

Both of these changes make it much more efficient to setup games and add pitchers to those games.

New Tools to Delete Old Games, Players, and Bull Pens

Over the last three years we've collected a lot of games and teams, but often we no longer need to keep them. Rather than the current method of deleting them one-at-a-time, you can now mass delete games and players.

- Clear Games by Team - select a team from the list and you may delete any or all of the games for that team.

- Clear Games by Date - if you want to delete last years / last seasons games, you may select a date range and clear all of those old games.

- Clear Players by Team - have an old team? Select a team from the list and clear any or all of the team members.

- Clear Bull Pens by Player - Select a player, and you may remove any or all of their bull pens from the app.

- Clear Bull Pens by Date - Select a date range, and you may remove any or all within that range from the app.

New Pitch Counter Contrast

We've often been at games where it's either very sunny or we are sitting in a darkened area out of the lights at a night game. This can make it difficult to view the pitch counter and touch the right buttons.

With those experiences we've added the ability to change contrast on the pitch counter. Simply touch the contrast button and choose lite (black on white), dark (white on black), or the normal color settings for the counter.

-- Updates & Bug Fixes --
- Changed game pitch counters to save information more often. In rare cases a user could loose pitch count information when navigating away from a pitch counter. We've addressed this by saving the information more often.

- Changed player pitching graphs so that the default view coincides with the choice of Game or Bull Pen pitch count viewing. Total Pitches still displays game information by default.

- Updated player pitch information summary to make it simpler to select Bull Ben, Game, or Total pitch views. Also added a 'guard' on the graph view to ensure there are games or bull pens to graph before navigating to the graph view.

- Added "Team Filter" for games: now you can select any team (home or visitor) from a list, and have the games view filtered by teams that match the selected name.

- Added "Pitching Summary" view for pitch counters: once people know you are counting pitches, parents, coaches, and others come up and ask "what was the pitch count for player X". Before adding the new view you needed to navigate back to the game summary to view the pitches, and then re-set the situation when you returned to the pitch counter. We've added a small button at the bottom of the pitch counter, that when pressed displays the summary information for all pitchers on the same team as the pitcher. You won't loose your place or your current situation when providing coaches and fans pitching information for other players.

- Updated Pitch Smart information to links. Pitch Smart continues to improve their site, and this impacts our ability to pull the information directly into Pitch Counter. We've changed the method for access to Pitch Smart so that the Safari browser is launched to the Pitch Smart website page.

- Fixed a bug in the "Flip" pitch counter where outs were not being recorded correctly for the home team.

- Under-the-hood changes to comply with new iOS protocols and definitions.

- Minor bug fixes and performance updates.
