About Candide, the enhanced edition
Orange, la Bibliothèque nationale de France and the Voltaire Foundation are giving you the chance to rediscover one of our major literary classics, Voltaire’s Candide, through a new iPad App. The app innovatively redefines the scope of a literature masterpiece to help you rediscover this important milestone in French heritage, in new and engaging ways. The enhanced e-book includes the original Voltaire manuscript preserved at the Bibliothèque nationale de France and further exclusive content.
The app contains three parts:
- Book : it offers synchronised plain text alongside the facsimile of the original manuscript kept at the BnF. You can also listen to the text beeing read by major French actor Denis Podalydes. In just one tap, you can also access definitions, variations of the critical edition, character studies, places or concepts, illustrations of the first editions from the 18th century and a 20th century edition illustrated by Paul Klee.
- World: The map tracks Candide’s journey while offering in-depth study on topics such as "Women in the eighteenth century", "Eldorado", "Cultivate your own garden", and "The image of the other"
- Garden: a collaborative space that allows everyone to organise and comment on their “favorites” and publish them as a book visible to everyone. These books appear in the garden as knowledge trees, which grow as the reader enriches them. This part is particularly designed to be an educational tool for schools: teachers can create their own notebook in the garden and invite students to contribute from the website (feature availability: early 2013).
