Coverage? Description
NEW: 5G maps & integrated speed testing!

Directly overlay and compare cellular carrier coverage maps! Perfect for travelers - research where you're covered across the USA (and now Canada!!)

** Follow our Facebook page to get update alerts: http://www.facebook.com/CoverageMapApp, or check our support page**

Coverage? focuses on helping mobile bandwidth junkies find cell signal as they roam. Save time looking up coverage on the carrier's websites, compare their claims head to head and better plan your travels to stay connected.

** The carrier's maps in your pocket: This app contains regional level maps based off of each major carrier's data map - as found on their website as of our last update. Quickly overlay the carriers you use to create your own personalized coverage map on your device.

** No internet needed: Our proprietary coverage maps are stored within the app on your device - no downloading needed! Quickly access where you're supposed to get a signal, even when you have none.

** Urban and rural areas: Maps are at a regional level, and cover the entire continental USA, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.

** Carriers included: AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, US Cellular.
** Canadian Carriers: Bell, Telus, Rogers (optional unlock)

** Know where to roam: view 5G, LTE, and roaming areas as overlays, focus on finding the coverage type you desire.

We created this app because we are full time 'technomads' ourselves who rely on mobile data to work remotely. Keeping this app updated is a priority for us, as we depend on it ourselves!

--------------
Coverage FAQ:
Q: Why aren't the maps more detailed or released more often?
A: Our map updates require a lot of meticulous labor intensive processing. There's just no practical way to issue a new update every time a new tower is turned on. We monitor new coverage and try to find balance between effort & staying current. This generally means at least a couple updates a year.

Q: What makes 'Coverage?' unique?
A: There are great apps out there that collect user submitted signal reports - we recommend them and use them ourselves. However, those apps are only useful in markets with an active user base. We took a different approach with Coverage? - we needed a tool to at least give us an idea of where signal should be - urban, rural, and out in the boonies.

--------------

The maps in 'Coverage?' are provided in partnership with Ookla, and represent proprietary interpretations of the coverage reported by each carrier. You should not rely on the maps in Coverage to be perfectly precise or absolutely timely.

Ongoing map updates have been free - but to support the ongoing development costs, we now allow customers to subscribe to higher resolution maps that will be updated more frequently.

Coverage does not report or predict signal strength (there are great apps out there for that!). We can make no promises as to where you'll *actually* get signal.. there are too many variables - towers, device, terrain, weather, etc.

So… Got Coverage?

NEW: Coverage now features mid-band 5G maps for all of the big three carriers - T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T!

If you subscribe to our optional HD coverage maps - you will now get access to detailed mid-band maps on AT&T for the first time, letting you compare AT&T's mid-band 5G with the mid-band maps from T-Mobile and Verizon.

Tracking mid-band 5G lets you see the areas where you are most likely to be able to get truly next generation 5G performance, not the "barely better than 4G" flavor of 5G found in many locations.

Additional Bug Fixes:
Corrected landscape layout issue with bottom button bar on devices with notch.
Corrected Carrier Button layer issue in landscape.

Introducing an Integrated Speedtest®
'Coverage?' has partnered with Ookla® to integrate accurate, unbiased network testing right onto your personalized coverage map. Try out the new Speedtest button to drop custom pins onto the map, and measure the performance you are seeing on each carrier you use in every location you travel.

And of course - all the coverage maps in the app have also been updated with all the latest information, including the latest 5G rollouts.

We have also removed the Sprint maps from this release now that T-Mobile has completed shutting down Sprint’s independent network, integrating it into its own. Farewell, Sprint!

NEW: Mid-Band 5G layer! Subscribers to the HD maps will now also get access to a layer that shows off where you can find 5G mid-band coverage - known as 5G Ultra on Verizon , 5G+ on AT&T, and 5G Ultra Capacity (UC) on T-Mobile.
'
GONE: Legacy 3G networks are being shut down, so this version of 'Coverage?' drops the 3G map layer.
2021.5 2021-05-29
New to ‘Coverage?’ this year - we have greatly improved the ability to place and manage your own custom pins on the map!

Now you can add pins by using the search tool, by entering GPS coordinates, or by pressing and holding to drop a pin on the map. And the new pin manager lets you edit and name pins, and select which ones that you want to see displayed.

Also new - if you also own our app ‘US Public Lands’ which tracks cellular coverage maps, your pin collection is shared automatically between US Public Lands and ‘Coverage?’ - making it easier than ever to scout ahead.

And of course - all the coverage maps in the app have also been updated with all the latest information, including the latest 5G rollouts.

MAJOR UPDATE: 5G Coverage Maps!
We are now able to include 5G coverage maps from AT&T, T-Mobile, US Cellular, and Verizon!

This is the biggest update to ‘Coverage?’ in years, and it turns ‘Coverage?’ into an ideal tool to track and compare where the carriers are deploying next generation cellular technologies. Subscribers to our “HD Maps Subscription” also get access to more frequent 5G map updates, and an exclusive layer showing which cities feature ultra-fast mmWave 5G (aka 5G+ or 5G UWB) coverage.

This mmWave layer can be toggled off and on as needed - and is currently featured on the AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon maps.

TIPS: The Base Layer selector on the bottom left of the screen lets you select whether to show just LTE coverage, LTE plus 3G, or to also include roaming coverage. You can also now choose to layer 5G maps on top, and you can turn off the base layer entirely to focus exclusively on 5G coverage.

Also new earlier in 2020:
* Canadian Coverage Maps!
We’re excited to be able to offer ‘Coverage?’ in Canada via an in-app upgrade, with LTE maps now available for the 3 major Canadian carriers - Bell, Telus and Rogers.

* U.S. Cellular: We also added support for the nation's fifth largest carrier this year, and are now including 5G maps as well!

We are able to keep this app updated thanks to your ongoing support and positive reviews. Thank you!

MAJOR UPDATE: Canadian Coverage Maps!
We’re excited to be able to offer ‘Coverage?’ in Canada, with LTE maps now available for the 3 major Canadian carriers - Bell, Telus and Rogers.

A one time unlock fee will permanently enable the Canadian maps for all three carriers inside the ‘Coverage?’ app.

For US based travelers - be sure to look up which Canadian carriers your US based plans roam onto, and enable the appropriate layers when headed north. Be sure to keep in mind any roaming restrictions or fees associated with your plan.

HD or SD Maps: If you have (or add later) the HD Maps subscription, this will apply to the Canadian maps as well - giving you access to higher resolution maps that are updated quarterly.

If you do not have the HD Maps subscription, you’ll have access to the standard resolution maps, and will receive map updates on a less frequent basis.

UPDATED: Newly updated maps for AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint.
FIXED: Issues with restoring previous purchases, and other bugs.

And from the April 2020 app release:
NEW: Added maps and support for U.S. Cellular - the nation's fifth largest carrier.

TIP: US Cellular does not have native nationwide coverage, and across much of the nations US Cellular customers are actually roaming onto other carriers, and may be subject to roaming usage limits. Use our US Cellular roaming layer to get a better idea when you are out of US Cellular native coverage, and thus might be at risk of running into roaming limits.

NEW: ‘Coverage?’ can now optionally and anonymously share your location and connection signal strength details with our mapping partner Mosaik to help improve the accuracy of future coverage map updates.

Absolutely no identifying data is collected in this process.

Information is only shared when this app is open and in the foreground, and this feature is designed to have minimal impact on battery and cellular data usage.

Mosaik will use the collected data to update the crowdsourced maps in their Sensorly app, and eventually the collected data will help improve the maps here in 'Coverage?' as well to better take into account real world signal conditions.

You will be prompted to participate when you next open the app. This setting can be changed later by selecting "Learn About Data Collection" on the Info screen at any time.

ALSO: This release includes updated maps for all carriers and regions, improvements to the HD map version information, and a support email address has been added to the Info Screen.

Welcome to the newly re-written Coverage? - featuring fully updated maps, and support for subscribing to get access to higher resolution overlays and a satellite view basemap.

We’re excited to bring you this very first major re-write of 'Coverage?' since the app was first launched in 2010. This re-write presents a platform for continuing to bring out new features, keeping map updates sustainable going forward.

Aside from a lot of backend development and our new map provider partnership with Mosaik Solutions, this new version gives users the ability to subscribe annually to higher resolution maps, in app quarterly map updates, and usage of satellite maps as a background layer.

Not interested in a subscription? No problem - you’ll continue to receive FREE standard regional resolution map updates (the same resolution as before) throughout the year just as always - even if you first purchased the app nearly 7 years ago!

We appreciate your support through the years, and your patience as we’ve been hard at work getting this new version completed.

May the bandwidth be with you!

Fully updated maps!

Thank you so much for your patience for this overdue update. We have been working on a new way of acquiring our mapping data, and have been working behind the scenes to seal a new partnership & integrating in new mapping data. We're pleased to join up with Mosaik Solutions, who provides comprehensive mobile network coverage data to their strategic operator partners (in other words, they create maps like this anyway!).

The maps in this release have been provided by them, and for now - you likely won't notice too much of a difference (except updated coverage maps!)

We're excited by this new partnership, which will enable us to focus more time & energy on building in new features and advancing Coverage? in the future. Expect great new things in early 2017!

Again, our apologies for the longer than anticipated wait - but we think this new partnership was worth the effort to ensure the long term sustainability & advancement of Coverage? Thank you!
2016.1 2016-01-20
All maps have been fully refreshed as of January 14th, 2016.

T-Mobile fans: We now show where T-Mobile has rolled out "extended range" LTE Band 12 coverage - important information for those with LTE Band 12 compatible devices like the iPhone 6S and 6S+. You can see Band 12 areas colored slightly brighter (lighter purple) on the T-Mobile LTE map.

We appreciate updated reviews in the App Store and sharing the app with your traveling friends. New app sales are currently what fund the efforts to keep this app updated. Thank you!
2015.10 2015-10-16
We've updated the app for iOS 9 compatibility (including multi-tasking support on iPads - great for comparing other apps side by side, such as campground locators that also support multi-tasking!), and we've updated the lower 48 maps for all the carriers - Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint.

For T-Mobile, we've begun showing coverage into Canada and Mexico on the Roaming Layer since T-Mobile plans now include 'Mobile without Border's with full data speeds across North America. For this release, we include coverage areas for Mexico & Canada that are within our Lower 48 'map imaging area'. In a future release, we intend to expand this area to include all of Canada and Mexico (no promises tho.. we never marketed Coverage? to include international coverage.)

Also, since Sprint is pulling the plug on their WiMax network later this month, we have removed that coverage from their maps.

As always, updates to Coverage? continue to be free to current customers, and are supported by new sales. We appreciate you updating your review for this version in the App Store, telling a friend or sharing it with others so that we can continue to provide updates.
2015.5 2015-06-01
A major map update with some improvements!

+ Completely new T-Mobile maps, for the first time showing distinct LTE, 4G, 3G, and 2G coverage areas.

+ Verizon extended LTE areas are now shown on the LTE maps in a muted red color - instead of the roaming map, since Verizon does not penalize customers for "roaming" onto partner LTE networks.

+ Updated coverage for Alaska - perfect for all those RVers (like us) headed north this summer.

+ Updated Hawaii and US Virgin Islands maps too!
2015.2 2015-02-18
Updated maps for all carriers!
In particular, T-Mobile maps are better than ever before. Their new mapping system still doesn't visually separate out 3G, 4G and LTE from each other. But since they claim they've rolled out LTE in most markets, we're now reporting all 3G/4G/LTE as a single image for all three coverage layer types. Which means.. no more stars (which we previously used to indicate markets where they claim LTE). It's not as precise as we'd prefer to match how the other carriers report their coverage, but - we'll continue to do the best we can with the information available.

Also - support for iPhone 6 and 6+ screen resolutions!

As always - every new release resets all the reviews in the App Store. If you want to support us in keeping 'Coverage?' updated, please update your review! Currently, all updates are funded by new purchases, and reviews help - as do telling your friends about the app. Until we have time to re-code Coverage? to offer other in-app options for existing customers to choose to support the massive map creation process - this is the best way you can support us and continue free map updates for all. Thank you!
2014.11 2014-11-19
NOTE: We discovered a bug in the apps ability to properly take advantage of the larger screen on the iPhone 6 and 6+, and it still runs stretched. This will be addressed in the next update.

Update Notes:
Major map update - the latest coverage maps from Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile.
Improved compression - application size dramatically reduced, and coverage layer edges improved.
Updated for iOS8.

Enhanced LTE Maps:
- Sprint now shows Spark markets on their maps, so it's now displayed as a darker brown on the LTE layer.
- Verizon now claims over 75% deployment of XLTE and growing daily. They do not differentiate on their own maps - so we opted to discontinue displaying 'stars' in XLTE markets to reduce clutter. XLTE is getting to be 'almost everywhere' anyway.
- T-Mobile still does not differentiate even LTE from 3G on their own maps visually. We've left darker purple stars in their LTE markets.
- AT&T is not yet reporting deployment of their AWS spectrum.

This app update was developed entirely with solar power. Yay!
2014.8 2014-08-05
Our sincere apologies for the slight delay in getting this update out. We've been pulling non-stop all-nighters writing "The Mobile Internet Handbook", but we managed to squeeze in some time for a major map update to 'Coverage?' too. Whew.

New maps from:
+ Verizon -- Including stars indicating the cities with XLTE!

+ T-Mobile -- We've added a visual distinction to T-Mobile's LTE stars so you can see where "Wideband LTE" has been deployed (brighter pink).

+ Sprint -- New LTE markets, and we now track Sprint's Spark network with stars indicating the cities!

+ AT&T -- A ton of new LTE coverage across the country. AT&T has not yet released a list of their cities with new enhanced LTE, but we're keeping an eye on it!

Of course, once all of the carriers include the enhanced LTE coverage on their own maps, we can include it too. For now, the best we can do is manually research and place markers on the maps to give some visual indication.
2014.4 2014-04-03
Complete map update for all carriers in the continental US.. and a spiffy new icon!

Notes:
- All carriers seem to be slowing down on expanding markets. Not as much new coverage reported as with previous updates - we may adjust our update cycle accordingly. (We promise *at least* quarterly updates... more recently they have been every other month.)

- Some carriers are starting to roll-out various flavors of 'advanced' LTE. We are also keeping an eye on this. Currently, only Sprint shows their Spark markets on their maps - but yet no device that can run Coverage? is Spark capable.

- T-Mobile continues to not graphically report their LTE markets at regional levels on their maps - so we continue to manually add in purple stars in markets they have announced LTE roll-outs. Sorry folks, that's the best we can do - we can only report what the carriers do.

As always, these FREE updates are funded entirely by new app sales. We appreciate you keeping your reviews in the App Store fresh (they reset with every update) and telling your friends about Coverage? Thank you!
2014.1 2014-01-30
All carrier maps completely refreshed and updated for the entire USA. AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile all continue to turn on new LTE markets, while Verizon seems to be slowing down.

We continue to manually mark T-Mobile LTE markets with a purple star, as their own maps don't visually make a distinction between 3G/HSPA+/LTE at regional zoom levels.

Coverage? has also been optimized for the new 64-bit A7 processors found in the iPhone 5S, iPad Air and Retina iPad Mini.

As usual, your reviews in the App Store and telling your friends about Coverage? help us reach new customers. These free & frequent map updates are entirely funded by new sales of the app. We greatly appreciate your support & enthusiasm!
2013.11 2013-11-26
Newly refreshed coverage maps for all the carriers - AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile have all been updated!

Like getting regular free updates? We'd really appreciate your review in the App Store - new sales of the app are our source of funding for creating these updates. Help us reach more customers!

Wishing you a blessed winter holiday season!
2013.9 2013-10-01
iOS 7 was released while we were in the midst of our latest map update, and we fell in love with the fresh new UI. So much so that we got a bit carried away with this release - and refreshed the user interface and icon to look awesome under iOS 7!

Never fear - iOS 6 is still supported too, though this will likely be the LAST release that supports iOS 5.

As usual, we have completely refreshed Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile coverage maps. Why? Because you can't stop progress. Or at least the spread of awesome fast bandwidth to us ravenous data consumers. More! More!

If you appreciate these frequent and free updates, please update your reviews in the app store - and tell your friends about the joys of 'Coverage?' too!
2013.7 2013-07-25
More more more! All of the carriers keep piling on the LTE to their maps!

Despite our own adventures breaking down on the side of the road in one of the few places with NO data coverage on any carrier, we still managed to get a full map update out.

Why? Because we love you.

Now leave us a review and tell us you love us too. :-) As always, these free updates are funded by new app sales - reviews helps us sell more copies, which means more updates for you!
2013.5 2013-05-30
LTE coverage is rolling out across the nation faster than mold growing on a stale tortilla.

We are doing our best to keep up!

This new release features all new AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile maps. T-Mobile still has not started reporting their LTE separately, so we continue to mark their newly announced markets with a purple star (and this update includes their May & June announcements, so some markets may not yet be turned on).

Oh.. and if you'd like to be 'in the know' for when the next Coverage? update comes out, follow us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/CoverageMapApp .
2013.4 2013-04-03
Because we love you, we have rushed out a quick new update welcoming T-Mobile's brand new LTE coverage (markets indicated with a dark purple star) and iPhone 1900 mhz (markets indicated with a yellow star).

We've also updated the other carrier's maps - wow, they keep rolling out the LTE quicker than we can keep up!

2013.3 2013-03-20
Completely updated maps: AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile

Notes on this update:

- T-Mobile has started rolling out their LTE, however they are not reporting this specifically on their maps. We are indicating the markets where there is LTE with a dark purple star. (Note from last update: the yellow stars indicate the new re-farmed 1900 mHz iPhone compatible markets.)

Coverage? updates have remained free to existing customers, and are funded entirely from new sales.

2013.1 2013-01-17
+ Map updates - AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile.
+ T-Mobile iPhone compatible networks now indicated!

More Info: Up until recently, due to radio frequency incompatibilities, iPhones and iPads have only been able to operate at 2G "EDGE" speeds on T-Mobile. T-Mobile has begun "refarming" its network to support iPhone / iPad compatible frequencies. Unfortunately, their own maps don't indicate exactly where this coverage is, but we have now marked the metro areas where T-Mobile has announced this support with a star on the T-Mobile 4G/3G map.
2012.11 2012-12-04
Massive map update including:

- All carriers: AT&T, Verizon, Sprint & T-Mobile
- Return of full resolution T-Mobile maps (note: T-Mobile does not designate 3G vs 4G on their own maps, so we show all their 3G/4G coverage under the '4G' setting.)
- Clearer edge boundaries on all maps
- Subtly faster performance of coverage map loading

We have been working behind the scenes to improve our map creation techniques, and this is our first experiment with trying a 6-week update cycle. We continue to try to find the right balance between keeping the app updated and the amount of effort required to update the maps and get through the approval process.

Thank you for your continued support and patience!
