The sound of the alarm clock is one of the most annoying things (besides hearing your voice). Why do people experience these negative emotions to such a common thing? Because mornings suck. Everyone knows this feeling of heaviness in your body and mind. The interesting thing about it is that despite getting enough sleep you still feel whacked. It is simply not fair! Let’s find out why and, most importantly, what we can do about it.

You must have heard about sleep cycles. It’s not another “gluten is your worst enemy” marketing ploy. Bet you have woken up several times (in your lifetime?) feeling extremely energetic even if you slept for less than 8 hours. That is because you go to bed at the wrong time most days.

Long story short: your sleep cycle naturally lasts 90 minutes. It consists of 5 different stages. The first 3 are light phases and the last 2 are deep. If you wake up during this time (also known as rapid eye movement) you will feel disoriented because it is also a “dreaming phase”. So the best time for you to wake up is once this cycle is over.

These are not just random numbers. The natural patterns of sleep were described by the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School based on the associated profound scientific research.
