We're excited to introduce automatic preset syncing and backup in Darkroom. Now all your custom and community presets will automatically synchronize across your devices, along with the favorites, arrangement, and even the sets you've chosen to hide. It's a significant step forward in enhancing your photo editing workflow, offering consistency and convenience on your iPhone, iPad and Mac.

Previously, Darkroom's preset management across multiple devices was a manual process that disrupted your creative workflow. Now all your presets are always accessible, eliminating the need for manual backing up, restoring, or manually sharing between devices. And because it's backed by iCloud, syncing works out of the box without a user account. It's as easy as that!

New: Dramatically Improved Highlight and Shadow Recovery

We’re releasing a major upgrade to our exposure recovery sliders that dramatically improves their recovery range and refines the result. This enables a whole new set of creative effects in Darkroom that were simply out of reach previously.

Five sliders in Darkroom have been rebuilt from the ground up: Exposure, Whites, Highlights, Shadows, and Blacks. These enhancements are available for all image types, though they are particularly powerful for RAW editing workflows, since RAW photos have a lot more detail to recover.

How to Upgrade your Existing Edits:

All your existing edits on your photos in Darkroom remain unaffected. The new implementation lives side by side with the previous one. This ensures that your edited photos won't look different when you open them again. However, if a previously-edited photo doesn't use any of the new sliders, we'll upgrade it automatically, so it always looks as best as it can.

If you would like to upgrade a previously-edited photo to use the new version of our sliders, please first reset your edits by selecting the Original preset, using the “Reset Edits” option in the actions menu, or using the “Reset” option the History tool.

When applying any preset, regardless of what version it was made with, we will use the new recovery algorithms. This ensures that community presets and existing presets won't be stuck with the old legacy recovery implementation.

Other Changes in this Release:

- We have removed the Photo Editing Extension. This means you can no longer use the limited version of Darkroom to make edits within the Photos app. For more details, please read the announcement about this release on our website.
- We’ve added three new icons to celebrate this release: Shade, Holo, and Album.
- Performance improvements that should help increase stability and reliability of using Darkroom
- Reduce size of image cache stored on device
- Fix for a HEIF bug on iOS 16 which caused ProRAW images exported to have a green thumbnail in the Photos app.
- Fixed a bug where photos that failed to load appeared stuck loading.

For a full list of changes and examples of the changes, please visit [darkroom.co/updates](http://darkroom.co/updates)

As always, we’re very thankful for your continued loyalty and support, and look forward to sharing everything else we have in store for you soon.

In a nutshell:

- **AI-powered masks** generate a 3D map of the scene in your photo, allowing you to edit the primary subject, foreground, background, and any range in-between
- **Smart Masks** intelligently single out the sky, hair, glasses, skin or teeth when editing Portrait and ProRAW photos
- **Gradient & Range masks** are the standard mask types but can be combined to create pixel-perfect selections that single-out an object or a region of your photo
- **Videos also support masks** with realtime 4K playback
- **Copy & Paste Options** allow you to select exactly which edits you want to paste onto other photos. Now you can apply any combination of aspect ratio, frames, and masks to a group of images

- Fixes rendering glitches when backgrounding the app quickly while editing.
- Fixes a bug where cropped and/or framed images would stretch if you open the Crop Tool.
- We use a lot less memory in our caching layer, ensuring sliders stay responsive and stable.

### RAW + JPG Photos

- Added a new setting to define what version you want to load by default. This allows us to skip asking you every time if you want to change the default when switching.
- Fixed an issue that could cause the RAW photos to appear too small, and JPEGs to show visual glitches when switching between the two.
- Fixed an issue that could cause RAW photos to display their dark regions too brightly.

### Crop & Transform

- Improved crop aspect ratio option by making the selection of the “As Shot” and “Free” options sticky across edit sessions.
- Fixed an issue that caused crop corner controls to not properly settle on the edges if moving quickly past an edge.

- The Clarity slider is still using too much memory and causing the photo extension to crash, so we decided to removed it from the Photos Extension until we can address its memory use.

### Exporting

- When you are exporting, we now pause all other image processing to speed up the export, and provide it as much memory as possible.
- We now re-use a lot more memory between editing and export, reducing the memory load of the app, and ensuring exporting jobs always have the memory it needs to finish their job.
- Improved HDR video export by ensuring it now exports to SDR with the correct colors. When we support end-to-end HDR editing & exporting, we will re-enable HDR exports.
- Fix a bug where exporting 4K videos with a frame would crash
- On iPhone, during export, the interface no longer adjusts to device rotation, which helps reduce memory usage and improves stability and reliability of exports.

### **UI Improvements**

- If the app interface is fully hidden (by tapping on the image to view it full-screen), we now allow you to swipe to dismiss to go back to the library.
- Fixed some layout issues with the batch toolbar, particularly on iPad.
- Fixed our in-app announcement message not auto dismiss if you tapped to read the announcement post.
- Improved the Flag & Reject bar when swiping to reveal it when also have the edit tools open, now this won’t force the edit tools to collapse, but the Flag & Reject bar will auto collapse after using them. This way you have a quick way to flag or reject.
- When picking a photo to add to an album on Mac, double-clicking on a photo will now add it to that album.
- Fixed side swipe quick start of multi selection showing in the photo picker.

Today's update adds complete Album Management workflows to Darkroom. From the library, you can now create, rename, and delete albums. You can also select photos and add them to an album. All changes are reflected in your photo library and vice versa.

This works both ways: You can either select photos and add them to an album, or select an album and add photos to it.

This also works in the editing interface. When you're editing, you can add an image to an album.

Try this on the iPad with drag & drop support on multiple items.

Try long-pressing on the album in the album picker to quickly perform actions to it.

Let us know if you encounter any issues or situations where you were confused.

Enjoy!

You can find videos alongside your photos in the Recents album. Videos play automatically and loop forever, pause the video to show the histogram or to pick a smart frame color from that frame.

Find your Screen Recordings filtered away in the Screenshots album, keeping your Recents album clean and tidy

We support H.264 and HEVC export codecs at various bitrates which you can customize in settings.

Look deeper into your photos and videos with our revamped Metadata viewer.

The Export flow is more descriptive, showing you the time remaining for a video to finish exporting.

This is just a first step in our new video journey, and we wanted to keep it simple and focused. We’d love to hear what you think, what you’d like to see next, so please be sure to leave us a message at feedback@darkroom.co or twitter.com/usedarkroom (http://twitter.com/usedarkroom)

4.5.4 2020-03-24
Note: This minor update addresses our top crashes, the black-frame export bug, and other reported bugs and issues.

We’re releasing a major under-the-hood rebuild of Darkroom’s rendering engine that will dramatically improve the performance, stability, and reliability of your photo editing experience.

This is the result of a yearlong investment in our infrastructure that touched over 50% of the code in the app. Although there aren’t any new features, every existing feature is better and faster.

*Here are the highlights:*

* We rebuilt our depth engine to provide a much more performant and accurate blur editing experiences that matches the Photos app. Now when you open a Portrait photo, we match the simulated aperture that the photo was captured by, and when available, we use the same blend of available depth images to provide a very high quality editable Portrait image that the system camera does.
* For the past year, RAW editing stability has been our top reported issue across all platforms. The bad news was that fixing it would require a massive, yearlong effort. The good news is we did just that. Starting now, the entire end-to-end RAW editing experience is revamped to be much faster, smoother, and more stable.

We’ve made the transition into and out-of RAW images much lighter and more smooth, improved the performance of all editing operations, and added support for pixel-level zoom on all RAW images.
* Increased the zoom range 5x allowing you to sport check small regions of the image efficiently.
* The interface is now much more responsive and won’t slow down as you perform more expensive rendering operations.
* Improved the performance of the photo grid, showing higher quality, more accurate thumbnails. No more black tiles!

We can’t wait to share with you all the new features that this work unlocks for us. Stay tuned!

Today’s release of Darkroom includes two new features that people have been asking for a long time: *Export Watermark*, and an expanded *Icon Picker*. We’re also switching to subscriptions (Only for new users) to set ourselves up for success in the next phase of Darkroom’s life.

*Here’s what’s new:

* Icon Picker:
It doesn’t hurt to have a bit of fun now and then :) Those who have been following us for a while know that every year or so we tend to give our brand a big overhaul to reflect major changes to the app. Now you can pick from old favorites or fun new interpretations of our icon.
* Export Watermark:
Full-featured watermarking tool that allows you to set a text or image watermark, and control its size, location, opacity, and even typeface. More explicit form of protection, particularly in a world dominated by social media where images are often reshared without credit.
* Export Summary:
Now you can see a short summary of your most important options when exporting a photo, such as export file type and quality, is watermark or copyright metadata protection added etc.
* Switch to Subscription:
If you’ve previously made a purchase, this change does not affect you. This is only for new users. We are switching Darkroom to a subscription for new users to help set ourselves up for success in the next phase of Darkroom’s life. We are focused in 2020 on releasing a lot of fantastic new premium features that will supercharge your editing and management experience. As we embark on this new phase, we need to ensure that we have a healthy business that can support its continued development and the investments necessary to get there. Read our announcement for more details.
* Other:
* Your purchases are now synced between devices that are logged in to iCloud using the same Apple ID. What this means is that if you've previously purchased Darkroom Premium Tools, once you download Darkroom on a different device all the Premium Tools will be unlocked instantly, without the need to restore purchases through the App store.
* Minor UI improvements and fixes.

A Whole New Look for Darkroom: Light Mode, Multiple Spaces, Shortcut Action, and Sound Effects. We’re thrilled to share with you our iOS 13 & iPadOS update. These are huge upgrades for Darkroom that showcase our continuously deepening integrating with the iPhone & iPad ecosystems.

Here’s what’s new:

* Light Mode: Darkroom's new Light Mode brings a fresher, softer experience to editing in Darkroom. We carefully reviewed every button and slider to make everything feel natural. You'll notice that the sliders have a fresher dynamic look and to match the new mode. We even went so far as to add a lighter version of the App Icon! Go to Settings for that little surprise.

* Multiple Spaces for iPad: On iPadOS you can now drag a photo to create a split view and edit two images side by side. You can create two library views, or edit one photo while you navigate your library. This unlocks unimaginably powerful mobile photo editing workflows.

* Siri Shortcut Action: iOS 13 expands the range of Siri's third-party capabilities. This opened the door for us to build the Shortcut we've been dreaming about for a long time. With the new Darkroom Siri Shortcut Action you will be able to get pretty much any set of images from anywhere, filter and frame it, and prepare it for export in Darkroom. There's simply no parallel for this level of efficiency and automation.

* Sound Effects: We worked with the amazing Josh Mobley to create a gorgeous collection of sounds that extend the inherently emotional photography experience to your tools. This is just the first step and we can't wait to hear what you think as we make Darkroom an even richer experience.

* Other:
* Fixed an issue that would cause some RAW photos not to load properly.
* Added the 5:4 aspect to the Frames tool and Export options.
* Added support for batch pasting photo rotation, mirroring, frame inset, frame aspect.
* Added support for the new tap-and-hold context menus.
* Added a current color indicator dot to slider handles.
* Added way to send us feedback even if you don’t use the Mail app.
* Added a check-mark to the Camera app switch sheet.
* Changed crop grid options to now remember the last used option across edit sessions.
* Changed the Histogram to not show color channels if saturation is set to 0.

We can’t wait to hear from you how you’re using this features and what you find yourself missing.

4.2 2019-08-06
The Darkroom Histogram is finally here in all its colorful, curvy glory! We obsessed over these curves endlessly to create a histogram that was easy to use that goes beyond just a graph of numbers. Our primary innovation here are the rich, verbose clipping indicators. Instead of abstract shapes that have no meaning, we show you contextual words that guide you through the histogram-driven editing process. We spent a lot of time making sure you see the right thing, at the right time, and in the right context. Let's get into the details:

# Histogram
- Easily spot and fix exposure and color problems with your photos objectively, in a way that eye-sight alone isn't suited for.
- Accessible either from the (…) action menu by selecting Show Histogram, or in Settings.
- To hide, simply swipe it off-screen to the right.
- On iPad, the Histogram is on by default on top of the tools.

# Clipping Warnings
- Objectively see pure black and pure white and know with certainty that you have fully utilized your tonal range.

# Clipping Overlay
- We also indicate where those clipped pixels are by highlighting the purple white ones in red, and the pure black pixels in blue.

# Blacks & Whites Tools
- Easily stretch your darks towards true black, and your lights towards true white. To help fix those shots that looked a tad flat and washed out, with a lack of true white or black.

# Curves
- We now show you the curves of all edited channels in each channel. This means less switching to see or match what edits you had made in any of your other channels.

# Enhancements:

- Added a check-mark to the RAW/JPG switch sheet.
- Improved the color contrast of the tool area background color and blur.
- Fixed a problem with adding a space before hashtags if we where already using a 5-dot prefix.
- Fixed some layout issues.
- Fixed an issue that would consolidate Albums when it shouldn't.
4.1.10 2019-06-29
This update brings following changes:
- Fixed a crash when trying to play a Live photo
- Improved stability of photo export
- Made other stability improvements

- Fixed an issue preventing users from using purchased tools and filters when the app is offline.
- Fixed an issue that would show a button to unlock all tools and filters in the library even if you already made a purchase.
4.1.8 2019-06-12
We are continuing our spring cleaning streak with this release. In case you missed it, in the past 2 months we have quietly shipped 7 updates tackling a wide variety of issues. In this release we're primarily focusing on the experience of launching Darkroom for the first time, but also refining every other part of the app:

* The Live Photo indicator now supports tap-and-hold as well as 3D Touch to play and stop the video preview.
* Improved the Portrait photo indicator and switcher to improve legibility, tappability, and more.
* Improved behavior when photo access is restricted by Screen Time.
* Fixed the album picker bar on iPhone hiding the labels after rotating your device.
* Fixed Export frames bug that prevented inset width of zero from working.
* Fixed a failure in Filter Backup causing the progress dialog to get stuck.
* Fixed the Frame Inset and RAW Exposure slider to no longer jump when editing for the second time..
* Fixed a bug in the Color Histogram that highlighted the incorrect bars reflecting a color region.

*Know Issues*

* Editing Depth and RAW photos can feel slow.
* The Depth Blur slider doesn't work for some photos.
* The Depth Blur slider seems missing on my iPhone Xs and iPad.
* There can be a mismatch between exports and the in-app preview for RAW photos.
* Zooming in on a RAW photo can crash Darkroom.
* Opening multiple RAW photos after each other can crash Darkroom.
4.1.7 2019-05-16
This maintenance update fixes a few isolated issues:
- Sometimes exporting from the photos app extension fails depending on the export file type chosen in the main app
- Sometimes when exporting images, the grid thumbnails are black until scrolled in-and-out of view.

3.7.2 2018-10-11
This is a RAW update that adds tack-sharp previews (including at zoom), and ensures the Metadata viewer shows accurate EXIF information for DSLR photos. It also fixes a bug that caused RAW previews to appear washed out.

It follows the major Darkroom 3.7 update which added the all-new Hashtag Set feature, support for Siri Shortcuts, and took advantage of all the new iPhones.

New in Darkroom 3.7:
• Hashtag Sets is the most comprehensive hashtag management tool on iOS. We've added a new section in Settings to manage your hashtag sets, and we've made them accessible everywhere. When exporting, you'll be able to select which hashtag sets you need, and they'll be copied when the export completes. Alternatively, you can access them by force-touching on the app icon right from the home screen, or from the all-new Today widget. Finally, you can create your own custom Siri Shortcuts to easily copy them from any other app without even opening Darkroom.

• Take advantage of the super high quality Portrait HD photos generated by iOS 12. When you take a Portrait photo of a person, iOS 12 captures a 2x resolution, super high quality depth map. When it's available, this is what Darkroom will use to generate the preview.

• We are ceaselessly improving the app. This update brings a refresh to our in-app status and progress indicators. For example, export operations now report precisely what is happening. This is particularly helpful for long-running batch exports. If a photo needs to download from iCloud in the middle of an export, we'll report the download progress.

• Many other bug fixes and improvements throughout the app

• Darkroom 3.7.1 fixes regressions introduced to older devices.
