I primi insediamenti nel territorio di Deruta sono favoriti dalla facile reperibilità di argilla, presente in grandi quantità nelle colline derutesi e nei depositi alluvionali del Tevere; la felice posizione geografica della città, per la prossimità ad importanti vie di comunicazione, consente lo sviluppo delle attività dei vasai e dei loro commerci.

Il Museo Regionale della Ceramica
Il Museo Regionale della Ceramica di Deruta è il più antico museo italiano per la ceramica; istituito nel 1898, conserva oltre 6000 opere ed è ospitato nel trecentesco complesso conventuale di San Francesco, interamente restaurato.
