Echo Meter Touch Bat Detector Description
Using the Echo Meter Touch 2 Pro plug-in module, this app allows you to listen to record and automatically identify bats by their ultrasonic echolocation calls. The module and this companion app reveal the silent and often times invisible world of bats, providing outdoor enthusiasts, citizen scientists, and researchers an affordable and informative way to interact with these important creatures. There are two models: Echo Meter Touch 2 (EMT 2) is intended for nature enthusiasts and batting hobbyists and Echo Meter Touch 2 Pro is designed for bat professionals and features a higher quality microphone, adjustable gain, and higher sample rate.

The Echo Meter Touch Ultrasonic Module senses ultrasonic signals, digitizes the signal, and transmits the ultrasonic data to the app on your iOS device.

LISTEN TO BAT’S ECHOLOCATIONS
EMT2 translates bat echolocations into frequencies that are audible to humans using two technologies. Wildlife Acoustics’ patented Real Time Expansion (RTE) allows you to listen to bats in real time with unparalleled fidelity. RTE maintains the timing and tonality of the original echolocations. Heterodyne (HET) listening via manual and automatic tuning is also available, for those accustomed to that way of hearing bats.

VIEW THE ECHOLOCATIONS ON A SPECTROGRAM
A real-time spectrogram shows the frequencies and timing of the echolocations. Scroll back in time and zoom in on previous "bat passes."

SEE MOST LIKELY BAT SPECIES IN REAL-TIME***
The Auto ID feature analyzes the echolocation calls and suggests the two most likely bat species matches in real time. This is the same technology used in our professional Kaleidoscope Pro Bat Auto Identification software. Currently, the app can identify 26 species in North America, 25 in Europe and 57 in the neotropics. For more information on Kaleidoscope and a full list of species, visit our website.

RECORD .WAV FILES
Activate triggered recording mode to automatically save bat passes to full spectrum .wav files for analysis on a computer or to view on your iDevice. Or use manual record mode to control start and stop of recording. View the recording spectrogram and add voice or text notes. Listen to the recording using RTE, HET, or traditional Time Expansion Playback (playback at fractional speed to make the ultrasound audible).

SEE YOUR PATH AND RECORDING LOCATIONS
View in satellite or road map view. View identified species codes directly on the map. Go to the recording's spectrogram from the map view. Transfer to your computer to view in Google Earth. Your iDevice must have GPS capability or you must use a Bluetooth GPS receiver for this functionality.
*Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.*

TRANSFER RECORDINGS TO YOUR COMPUTER
The EMT 2 can transfer the .wav recordings to your computer over a Wi-Fi network or using a USB cable.

SHARE RECORDINGS VIA EMAIL OR MMS MESSAGING
And import and open files that have been shared with you.

***Because bats vary their echolocation calls in response to a wide variety of needs, no automated identification can achieve 100% accuracy in species identification. Auto-ID, though largely accurate, should not be relied on as a basis for scientific research. Auto-ID is intended for use in analyzing recordings of single bats in free flight in low clutter environments. Auto-ID will not work well on recordings of roost emergence, multiple or captive bats, bats in high clutter environments, or bat social calls. Auto-ID does not include every possible bat for each of the covered regions.

GENERAL IMPROVEMENTS
+ We have decided to open up all the advanced settings for use on the non-Pro EMT 2. Gain and Sample Rate do require EMT 2 Pro hardware, but all the other settings are now available.

AUTO-ID IMPROVEMENTS
+ Adds “Remove IDs” as an option when selecting Auto-ID on the Recording List screen. This will strip out the ID from both meta-data and the filename prefix.

RECORDING IMPROVEMENTS
+Upside down mode for iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. (This was previously available only for iPhone X.) A button at the top of the Live Mode screen flips the screen upside down. This was pretty difficult to implement as Apple does not allow automatically flipping the screen on these phones because of the notch in the display so we will not be able to bring this feature to other screens in the app.

RECORDINGS IMPROVEMENTS
+Adds a “Clean Database” button to the Information Screen. This button will make sure that each recording in the list still points to a recording file on your device. Sometimes recordings can end up in this list with no associated file if the user deletes files in the file system of the device or through iTunes. Cleaning this up when the app is "initializing" on start up just takes too long so this is a way to clean house when needed without start-up delays.
+Fixes several issues with importing individual recordings or entire sessions.

2.6 2018-12-31
Adds 13 bat illustrations painted exclusively for the EMT by renowned wildlife illustrator Fiona Reid. Illustrations are now included for all bats in the European region. Happy holidays!
2.5 2018-12-12
+The iOS app replaces Open GL graphics processing with Apple's newer Metal processing. This is for future compatibility but also might improve performance on older devices.
+Deals more intelligently with recordings placed into the iOS file system. If EMT recordings are present, the app will offer to import them into the recording list. If other recorder's recordings are present they will be ignored.
+Fixes an issue where the spectrogram would fail to update when going from expanded to compressed view.
2.4.2 2018-11-28

This 2.2.2 release has the fixes and improvements outlined below.

GENERAL IMPROVEMENTS
+Improved compatibility with new Echo Meter Touch 2.
+Several bug fixes to improve performance using Echo Meter Touch 1.

AUTO-ID IMPROVEMENTS
+New and improved version 4.3 classifiers from the latest version of Kaleidoscope Pro.
+Illustrations by renowned nature illustrator Fiona Reid have been added for six species of UK bats. These are shown in the Auto-ID pop up and can be viewed full screen on the bat info pages. More are forthcoming.
+Added many European countries to the country dropdown menu.
+Updated several common names of European bats.
+Fixed two swapped info links for UK bats and added Lesser horseshoe to the UK list.
+Dropdown of North American states now shows the count only of species that have classifiers.
+Added missing info links to a few North American species.
+Removed South Africa species that did not have classifiers. Now a total of 21 bats are visible in the selection list.

SPECTROGRAM IMPROVEMENTS
+A bandpass filter is now implemented in Live Mode and during playback of recordings in all listening modes. If you zoom in frequency, you will only hear the frequencies visible on the screen. If there is a quite a bit of low frequency noise, or the recorder is picking up its own output, you can now filter for a cleaner sound. You can also filter out the higher frequency noise of the EMT2 if you do not have very high frequency bats.
+Auto-ID pop-up is now translucent and its size reduced to make more spectrogram visible.

Please email us by selecting "Leave Feedback" from the Information screen of the app with any suggestions, issues or questions. If you like the app, please let others know by selecting “Review this App” on the Information page. You can view these release notes later in the App Store under Version History. Happy batting!
2.2.1 2017-04-26

+Improves function with upcoming EMT2 and EMT2 Pro.
+The User Guide is now built-in so it does not require an internet connection.
+The frequency reference line, recording list sorting mode and audio listening mode are all now reset when selecting Restore Defaults on the Information Screen.
+Fixes a few issues in the Advanced Settings screen, especially the issue that made it difficult to slide the toggles to the right.
+Removes the “debug log” (the green text that appears sometimes if you tap multiple times in one place), which was accidently left in the last app store version.

LIVE MODE IMPROVEMENTS
+The timeout on the ID pop-up has been reduced to 5 seconds (and only 2 seconds if NO-ID).
+The size of the pop-up ID screen has been minimized so it covers less of the spectrogram.
+Brings back the orange triangle for the minimum trigger frequency setting, but now it is an indicator only, the setting is still adjusted in the settings drawer.
+Restricts Auto-heterodyne tuning to 10kHz or the minimum trigger frequency setting, whichever is higher. This prevents the heterodyne from tuning to low frequency noise.

AUTO-ID IMPROVEMENTS
+Adds missing info links to a few species in Europe.
+Fixes common names of North American bats which were not exactly “common”.

RECORDINGS IMPROVEMENTS
+The meta-data in the recording now reports the “model” as Echo Meter Touch 1, Echo Meter Touch 2, or Echo Meter Touch 2 Pro.

Please email us by selecting "Leave Feedback" from the Information screen of the app with any suggestions, issues or questions. If you like the app, please let others know by selecting “Review this App” on the Information page. You can view these release notes later in the App Store under Version History. Happy batting!

-The app is now compatible with the new Echo Meter Touch 2 recorders. The Echo Meter Touch 2 ($179) is intended for budget-minded nature enthusiasts and batting hobbyists, and the Echo Meter Touch 2 Pro ($349) is designed for bat professionals. Both will be available for purchase soon.
-Adds bat portraits taken by Merlin Tuttle for all North American bats. These are shown on the Auto-ID pop-up in Live mode and on the bat info pages, which are accessible from the AUTO-ID SELECTION screen.
-Adds a new ADVANCED SETTINGS screen to the side menu. This screen is only accessible if an Echo Meter Touch 1 or Echo Meter Touch 2 Pro is connected. (These settings do not apply to Echo Meter Touch 2 Standard.) The following settings have been moved from the spectrogram’s settings drawer into this new screen: Trigger Sensitivity, Audio Division Ratio, Nightly Sessions Mode, Save Noise Files, and Real-Time ID. The following settings have been added: Maximum Trigger Length, Trigger Window and Auto-ID Sensitivity. Additionally, two settings have been added that are only functional with the new Echo Meter Touch 2 Pro: Sample Rate and Gain.
-Adds a “Restore Defaults” button to the bottom of the Information screen. This restores the following to defaults: zoom level, spectrogram settings and advanced settings. It also unselects all bats on the AUTO-ID SELECTION screen.
-Adds an Acknowledgments screen to the Information screen for Merlin Tuttle and contributors to Kaleidoscope’s classifier training data.
-Many minor bug fixes.

AUTO-ID IMPROVEMENTS
-New Kaleidoscope 4.2 classifiers offer classifier improvements in all regions.
-Adds 6 species of North American bats to the species list. These new species do not yet have classifiers, they are included so the user will know what bats are not covered. We hope to eventually build classifiers for these species. The new bats are automatically checked when you select the state or province, but they have grey checkmarks indicating they are not covered in the classifiers.
-Adds the ability to click the runner-up species on the Auto-ID pop-up to immediately tag the recording with that bat instead of the front runner. Additionally, you can select “CHOOSE ID FROM LIST” to choose any selected species of bat.
-The Auto-ID pop-up now shows the ratio of echolocation calls of the top bat to the total detected calls. This helps give a sense of confidence in the identification.
-Adds an information link to the Auto-ID pop-up that opens that bat’s info page.
-For North American Classifiers, the state and province list now breaks out all Canadian provinces.
-The app now uses a standardized 6 letter species code with the first three letters of genus followed by the first three letters of species.

SPECTROGRAM IMPROVEMENTS
-Replaces left and right arrow buttons on the spectrogram with "Return to real-time" when scrolled back in time in LIVE MODE and "Return to beginning" when scrolled forward in time on a recording’s spectrogram screen.

2.1.4 2016-10-26
This 2.1.4 version has the following changes:

GENERAL IMPROVEMENTS
-The app now provides backwards compatibility to iOS 8 for the 5% of users who have not yet upgraded to iOS 9 (or now 10).
-Fixes some formatting issues in the settings drawer on 4" screens.

SPECTROGRAM IMPROVEMENTS
-Removes the debug log. The method we used to save and share the log no longer works as of iOS 10.

2.1.2 2016-09-20
This 2.1.2 update includes the following improvements as well as miscellaneous bug fixes:

LIVE MODE IMPROVEMENTS
-Recovery from white noise events is significantly improved for normal operation and slower when the screen is off to avoid congestion and failure (when the screen is off, technically the app is in a background mode which has less CPU resources available to it).
-We also updated the waiting period for reconnection in the event that the module loses connection. In normal mode, it is 5 seconds as before, in background it is increased to 10 seconds to give a better chance of recovery without falling back to the start screen.
-Improvement to RTE and HET playback where the playback will be on all samples as though expanded view is selected, whether in compressed or expanded view. This lets you hear exactly how the bat would have sounded in live mode. TE will still play back in compress or expanded, depending on view as it is nice to be able to play back calls without all the silence in between. This also makes scrolling smoother when playing back in compress view with either RTE or HET.
-Changed recording timer behavior in Live Mode. It will now start at the beginning of triggered recording session (as now). And when a manual trigger is started, it will show the elapsed time of that manual recording (as now). After the manual recording is over, it now goes back to the elapsed time for the triggered session rather than restarting.

AUTO-ID IMPROVEMENTS
-Fix for meta-data not being written correctly when a manual ID is applied.

GENERAL IMPROVEMENTS
-In light of the new iPhone removing the headphone jack, we updated all Bluetooth code to assure compatibility with Bluetooth headphones and speakers.
-Exported KML file now leaves labels blank rather than using the date and time so as to not clutter up the view in Google earth.

2.1.1 2016-08-18
This 2.1.1 update includes the following improvements:

GENERAL IMPROVEMENTS
-Removed the orange triangle that controls minimum trigger frequency from the spectrogram and added new slider for that setting in settings panel. Hopefully this will prevent accidentally moving the setting and make the purpose more obvious. Also rearranged and renamed a few settings to make things clearer.
-Fix for last recording of a session occasionally not getting added to the KML.

LIVE MODE IMPROVEMENTS
-Fix for audio freezing when the screen is turned "off".

RECORDINGS IMPROVEMENTS
-While deleting a long list of files, the count of files deleted and total files queued for deletion is now shown.
