Why make the messages interactive? It was working just fine! No, it really wasn't working just fine!
For example, if you had sent yourself a phone number to call later, you would receive the message. Open it, unable to click on the number, dismiss it, go to the list view, click on the Delivered messages, select the message to edit, highlight the phone number, copy, and then paste it into the Phone app. That's not ok. That's a headache.
With the new Interactive Message View, when the message arrives on your lock screen, tap it to launch HiFutureSelf. Your message will be displayed with the phone number highlighted. Simply tap the phone number to make a call!
This will work with phone numbers, links, addresses, calendar events, flight numbers, and more.

I've been visiting NY for a little bit, and although my messages were coming in at the right time, they would show up in the Message List as 3 hours off!
Editing these messages was even more confusing as they would show 3 hours off, but would be delivered at the correct time! That bug is DONE! HiFutureSelf now adjusts to display messages in the right time zone and the editing view also adjusts to the timezone of the original message.
If you have a message every morning for 9am in San Francisco then travel to New York, it will still arrive at 9am every morning in NY and appear correctly in the Message List.

When viewing your messages in the message list at the default system font size, the preview will naturally display the first two lines of your message. But, if you bump up the system font size to be a little larger (for easier reading), only the first line would be displayed. By giving that message an extra 2 pixels of space, we can now fit two lines even at the bumped-up font size.
Anyway, it turns out I'm getting older, and my eyes aren't what they used to be. I've bumped up the default font size for easier reading on my phone. Users who have excellent vision (ugh, so jealous!) won't see a difference.

I live in San Francisco, and have weekly reminders for trash days and street cleanings (parking). While visiting my mom in another city, I injured my back and couldn't go back home. Stuck in my mom's house, it was annoying to be receiving these San Francisco street cleaning reminders. Not at all useful in the moment.
Deleting all those reminders I had set over the last 2-3 years and having to recreate them felt so daunting.
That's where the idea of "paused repeating messages" came. Pause repeating notifications when they are not helpful, and resume them when you need them again. And, best of all, my back is feeling much better. Thank you, Mom!

It’s 2010, I’m alone and completely burnt out :(. 3 years have gone by since I started this company. I built 10 web apps, and slowly watched them lose ground to larger competitors. All of the fun and joy of making things had long disappeared. Why did I quit my job for this? Break. I needed a break. But…. “OMG I forgot to water this stupid dead plant again…. why can’t I just text myself to do it later… wait… I can make that app”
The first version of HiFutureSelf was launched after about 30 minutes of coding. You couldn’t “delete” or “edit” messages.. and there wasn’t a nice “interface” but it worked! And it was super fast. I made a little post on Reddit, and you crazy people took HiFutureSelf to Top 100 in the world! It was an incredible journey. Thank you!
Your sweet e-mails keep me inspired and wanting to make HiFutureSelf better for you. Thank you guys! I love hearing all the unique ways you use the app.

The reality is that Objective-C is will be slowly phased out by Apple. Swift will be the future for all iOS apps. This transition is inevitable. iCloud integration requires quite a bit of work and introducing a lot of new code. I would rather write that new code in Swift rather than having to do it in Objective-C now, then re-writing it in the future in Swift. Once this transition to Swift is complete, the plan is to add iCloud integration to automatically sync across all your devices.

- If you're going between time zones, your message list will display the wrong time/date (even though the message will go off at the right time). That is now fixed both in the messages view and in the Today widget. :D (Thanks Ben!)

Cleaning up the the code for iOS 9+ was a big undertaking (originally designed for iOS 3!), but going forward updates will be much easier and more frequent! We have so many exciting features planned :D
