About HuicholesMNA

Bilingual digital app on the temporary exhibition Paths of Light, Huichol Universes in the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City from December 2016 to April 2017. As part of the exhibition series One Piece, One Culture, this display offers visitors an encounter with the culture of the Wixarika (Huichols), an indigenous group from West Mexico, and essential elements of their worldview through one of their masterpieces: The Vision of Tatutsi Xuweri Timaiweme by José Benítez Sánchez.

This app provides general content on the exhibition. It also introduces the Huichols through texts and images, the artist and context of one of his most emblematic pieces, an artwork with a ritual essence. The Vision of Tatutsi Xuweri Timaiweme is a yarn painting measuring 244 x 122 cm, made in 1980 and filled with countless elements, symbols and tales of unique beauty and complexity. It reveals the essence of ever rich and dynamic Huichol culture.

This app presents a general reading of this work as an introduction to its meanings. Visiting the link to the online exhibition microsite supplies much more information on Huichol culture and this masterpiece: videos, images and an expanded reading of José Benítez’s work. This app is an invitation to an encounter with Huichol culture, its tradition, and emblematic art that allows whoever explores it to devise his or her own unique interpretation.
