How was your GW holiday? Mine was great. I took my family to Ishikawa and Fukui this year!
We went there because my kids had been begging me to take them to The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum.
The day before our trip, I went online and found out that there is usually a long line to get into the parking lot and to get inside the museum as well. We were initially going to arrive about an hour before the museum opens but after seeing some tweets about the dreadful wait times, we decided to leave in the middle of the night, park in the nearby parking facility and get some shut-eye in the car until the morning.
Sure, it was kind of hectic, but all of it was totally worth it because we beat the crowd. We got to see different dinosaurs and even bought a big Pteranodon model as a souvenir! It was a really wonderful GW for me and my family.
Driving through the night is a good way to avoid traffic, but it can be exhausting. I couldn’t help but wonder when we are going to be traveling freely with an autonomous vehicle. It will be nice to sit back and relax while the car drives us there. My mission is to make mobility accessible so that traveling can be more pleasant and stress-free for all.

We participated in the try! Swift Tokyo 2019 conference, which was held in Shibuya on March 21- 22. The iOS team worked super hard to get ready for this event because it was our first time to have a sponsor booth at a conference.
We prepared a bunch of scripts for service and architecture demonstrations. We made fun contents and awesome giveaways. And by “made fun contents” I mean that literally! We sat around printing out coupons with a label printer and packing novelty items into a capsule for our very special toy capsule machine.
When we couldn’t find the key to the capsule machine in the morning, we thought we were totally doomed. But we ended up having a great time speaking with everyone that came by our booth. Thank you!

The order process enhancement was the focus of this update. We basically went on a diet this week.
As you might remember, the team had the dev boot camp at the end of last year in which the iOS gang declared “clean up” to be the sole goal. This cleanup or diet as we’ve come to call it ended up taking us three months to complete!
You know how your clothes start to feel too tight around the knees or don’t fit right when you are gaining weight? That’s kind of what happened with an app, believe it or not. Adding a new feature feels too tight. When you fix A, B breaks. The key is to not wait until you become too obese to fix, but to build in a self-controlling system that would prevent a rebound weight gain. Well, we did exactly that and will continue improving the app and your experience with it.

To be honest with you, we get a lot of inquiries from users who can’t remember their registered email address and have trouble signing in to the app. And I am sorry that it took a while for us to work on improving the retrieval process. This update includes a new feature that will help you when you can’t sign in. More specifically, when you fail to sign in a number of times, a dialog will pop up to guide you through the next steps. We hope this will ease the pain of dealing with sign-in errors.
Speaking of pains, I hear that the hay fever season has begun in Japan. Yikes! Some countries have taxis with an air purifier in the cabin. Maybe Japan should do the same and mandate all vehicles to install a cleaner that eliminates pollens and allergens! lol (but for real…)

Regrettably, the previous update caused a payment issue with JapanTaxi Wallet. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused. This update will fix the bug so please install this latest version if you are a JapanTaxi Wallet user.
This week, we worked on a couple of usability improvements as well.
On the location setup screen, tap the new magnifying glass icon to open the location search screen. You can use this icon when you want to search location by name of a building, store or restaurant. (The magnifying glass is so much more intuitive than the previous “>” icon, isn’t it. ) When setting up a drop-off point that’s distant from the pick-up point, this feature comes in handy as well.

Hi everyone. Guess what. I got the notorious type A flu last weekend.
It began with just a dryness in my throat and before I knew it, I had the chills, started to cough, got a headache and my nose was running. The very next day, I went to the doctor to get tested for the flu but it came back negative. So I went home to sleep it off, but I kept having this nightmare where I was trying to build huge blocks with my feet..lol I couldn’t sleep at all. It was horrible.
I went back to the doctor the following day because I was just not getting better at all. And this time, the test showed positive for type A Influenza. They gave me an oral medication which was kinda cool. I inhaled the drug through a device once and that was it.

Do you usually speak with your taxi driver during the ride? I am not usually the talkative type, but something happened the other day that totally changed my attitude. Let me share the story with you today.
One day after work, I got a taxi from the west exit of my home station. Getting in, I asked the driver to head towards a landmark that’s close to my home. And to which he replied, “You know, it’s much faster to get there from the south exit.” He is probably a local driver and well-versed in the area because I’ve been living at my current house for the past two and a half years and I had no idea this is the case! I’d thought I knew my own town and always grabbed a taxi from the west exit. I was so thankful that this kind driver taught me something I didn’t know for all this time!
I mean when I am traveling, I’ve asked taxi drivers for local gourmet tips and things like that. But this experience taught me that you can always learn something new about a neighborhood even if you think you are already familiar with it. And taxi drivers are very knowledgeable. Who knows, maybe you can talk to your driver next time you are taking a taxi. You might be in for a nice surprise!

The update version we are releasing today is the result of our dev bootcamp that was held in December. The iOS team’s theme for the camp was “New Year, New Look,” and we got to work on optimizing the app for iOS 12.
The purpose of the dev bootcamp was to work on random projects that had been pushed aside by more urgent tasks. This was also a great team-building opportunity for the growing dev team and we used the after-work hours to play a couple of fun activities. One of my favorites was Marshmallow Challenge. As some of you may know, the objective of Marshmallow Challenge is to build the tallest tower using marshmallows. My team played horribly, with a whopping score of 0 cm (!) and placing last in the group. Yet it was a great activity that reminded me of the importance of teamwork and I feel like I grew as an engineer through this experience.

- To enhance your ride experience, we will be encouraging you to review your driver with a popup dialog on the Order Status screen.
- We fixed a bug where the Modify Order popup would display when the network got disconnected during the taxi search.

- We fixed a minor layout bug that was cutting off some texts on the Ride Ticket page in the Chinese language setting.

Hi there! I am stoked to announce that “d Payment” is added to our ever-growing list of payment methods! This is a great addition to our payment selection because you can use “d Payment” even if you don’t have the Docomo line. Nice, right?
I want to take this opportunity to thank my teammates who worked tirelessly on implementing this new feature this week.
On my left is Mr. Giggles. He is usually focused on his work but can be easily amused by my chatting to him. I love his laugh, it’s contagious.
On my right, meet Mr. Deadpan. He is deceptively quiet in person, but try talking to him on Slack! He knows how to crack you up!!

Btw, we released the version 4.2.3 that enabled 3D Touch for JapanTaxi Wallet last month. Have you had a chance to use it?
Before this awesome improvement, you would have to open the app and select JapanTaxi Wallet from the main menu in order to get to the QR code reader screen. Not cool when you are in a hurry. But now with this version, all you need to do is tap on the app icon on your device’s screen and voila, you are there!
It might sound like a tiny feature, but it’s actually a great time-saver, not to mention super convenient. Because we want all our users to use our app more easily and efficiently, we are talking about ways to promote this awesome new feature to further spread the word. So stay tuned!

What’s New?

I hope this Stonehenge bug gave you a chuckle. Honestly, it made me lol when I first saw it. (For those of you who have no idea what I am talking about, we had this crazy issue where the map showing Stonehenge, UK would display upon launch.) Disclaimer: this wasn’t a prank nor were we paid by the Stonehenge Tourism Association to promote this historic site.
It’s not that any of us have some great love for Stonehenge, but sure. I would totally visit Stonehenge and visit famous locations from the King Arthur movies! Wouldn’t you? And when you do, don’t forget to use our Airport Fixed Rate on your way to the airport! (You see how I snuck that in there?)

By the way, did you know that JapanTaxi is a launch partner of Amazon Alexa? For app version 4.0.4 and older, you can select My Account from the menu and go to Amazon Alexa to set it up. With this version update, you will find Line Clova under Integrations along with Amazon Alexa. You will be able to customize your pickup location and set up a payment method from here. (Sorry, Clova and Alexa currently speak Japanese only)
For Clova integrations, please download the official LINE Clova app.
Using a voice assistant tool to call a taxi is pretty awesome, isn’t it. I got to use both LINE Clova and Amazon Alexa during the testing phase and holy cow it blew my mind that I can get a taxi so effortlessly. What’s great about these smart speakers is that you can be doing other things while using your voice to do something completely different.
Like doing dishes and calling a taxi simultaneously, lol. Now that I saw at first hand the convenience of smart speakers, I am seriously considering purchasing one for myself!

Hi all! We noticed some of you actually read our first entry and we were totally thrilled! Here at JapanTaxi, we live and breathe user feedback. Thank you for your continued support.
With this latest update, we worked on minor bug fixes and improvements. When I set a pickup location, I use the search field to find a nearby landmark and then adjust the pin from there. But it was a bit annoying to have to tap the bar in order to turn on the search field. When you have a larger iPhone, this gets dull, doesn't it. So I brought this up to the team and here we are!
This is a minor improvement, but I believe it's the little thing that counts when it comes to user satisfaction. We are going to keep on working hard to improve the app and deliver the best taxi experience that you deserve.
