About Kiff: Food expiration tracker

Save time and money with Kiff, your food-waste reducing companion.

Are you tired of opening your fridge and pantry to find expired groceries and wasted food? Kiff is here to transform the way you manage your food, helping you always enjoy it in its freshest and best state while saving you time and money.

By choosing to eat fresh, you not only reduce waste but also contribute to a healthier planet. With a unique UI and beautiful details, Kiff is here to guide you on your journey towards reducing food waste at home.

KEY FEATURES

• Quick barcode scanning: Add your packaged food to your inventory in mere seconds with our efficient barcode scanner.

• Expiration date tracking: Keep expiration dates under control to ensure you consume your groceries before they go to waste.

• Track food duration: Monitor the time since you opened, purchased, or cooked your food, preventing unnecessary spoilage.

• Set shelf life: Define the desired shelf life for each item, so you can consume them before it's too late.

• Timely alerts: Kiff sends you notifications when your food is approaching its expiration date, ensuring you never miss a chance to savor your meals.

• Smart inventory management: Automatically add low-stock food items into your grocery list in the system's Reminders app.

• Insightful consumption analysis: Identify the food categories you consume the most and those items you frequently discard thanks to our consumption insights.

HOW IT WORKS

When you return from the grocery store, simply open Kiff before storing your purchases in the fridge or pantry. Add each item to the app, set their shelf life, and add an expiration date if applicable. You don't have to input everything at once. Start with fresh produce and items for the fridge or freezer, adding pantry items or those with distant expiration dates later.

For leftovers or weekly meal prep, after storing them, open Kiff and set their shelf life and activate the tracker.

That's it! Kiff will take it from there, sending you reminders to consume your leftovers and groceries before they go bad.

ABOUT KIFF

You open the fridge any day, and there they are, the sour milk, the expired yogurt, bad-looking leftovers, or the rotten lemon. The incredible thing is that about 1/3 of the world's food production is lost or wasted—1.3 billion tons per year, around 170 and 180 kilos per person. The output of 30% of the planet's agricultural land (that's greater than the size of China!), along with 170 billion cubic meters of water, all wasted.

Once all this food breaks down, it produces a carbon footprint of 4.4 billion tons of CO2 each year. Between 8 and 10% of the global greenhouse emissions. The third-largest greenhouse gas emitter in the world, just after China and the USA.

40% of all this waste is generated at home—expired produce and discarded or gone bad leftovers that we throw away because we have cooked too much. The annual cost for each family can be a surprising amount between $1,200 and $1,800 US dollars, depending on where you live on the planet.

We build Kiff with one goal in mind: help you eat your food in its best state possible. Because food loses its nutritional capabilities after keeping it for too long, and if spoiled, it can be a risk for your health. By eating fresh food, you waste less, save money, and help the planet.

We all handle our pantry and fridge in our own way. That's why we've been working on some new customization-focused features so you can personalize Kiff to suit your needs better.

HOME FILTERS

Visit the new "Filters" option inside the settings and add, reorder or remove filters to customize your home screen. On top of that, we have added some additional ones.

WIDGETS

Long-press any widget to access the new edition mode, to keep an eye on those perishables that go to waste faster, like fruits or vegetables, directly on your phone's home screen. If the edit options don't appear, remove the widget and add it again, that should do the trick!

ADD MULTIPLE UNITS ON EACH SCAN

Some products come in packs, and every time we scan them, we have to add their units manually. Now you can define the amount of units to add on each scan in the food catalog under the new "Add multiple units at once" feature. Every time you scan the product, these units will be added directly to the stock.

IMPROVEMENTS

• If you edit a food's name, icon, or category from the food detail view, the changes will be saved to the food catalog and applied to any new items added.

• You can search for any food by barcode number.

• Fixed an issue with top consumed and top wasted charts inside the Consumption Insights. If you had less than five items, you may have noticed that the view was larger than it should have.

• Other minor adjustments and improvements.

We've fixed an issue with a notification bubble (for the celebration of FLWDay) not going away in the settings.

We've also included a large size for the Overview Widget, which now displays the most urgent twelve foods directly on your home screen, so you don't miss a thing.

This update also features some exciting news from v1.6.0:

YOUR INSIGHTS ARE HERE!

You've been putting in the work, and now is time to see the results. If you have been using the consume and trash actions, check your all-time consumption insights directly in the settings. Want to know more about a specific food consumption rate? Just go straight to the food card to see more about it.

This update is the first step to provide you with all the information to understand your consumption habits. Our objective is to help you make better informed and more sustainable purchasing decisions so you can save both food and money.

Join us and let's celebrate the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste!

Did you know a third of all the food produced worldwide is lost or wasted? The incredible amount of 1.3 billion tons per year! This waste is responsible for 8-10% of all global emissions, which contributes to the climate change threat, one of the greatest of our time. But not only that, other essential resources that are key to feeding more people, such as land and water, are also lost in the process.

We need to eat (obviously), but current food consumption patterns are unsustainable from both health and environmental points of view. From all the food waste, 40% is generated at home. We all are part of this problem, and we can do much more. We need to change not only what we eat but how much food we buy and throw away. Together we can make a big difference!

This year, we want to celebrate this day with a new update that includes some exciting news and features.

KIFF ANNIVERSARY AND MAKEOVER!

We can't believe a whole year has passed since we launched this little app. Time flies! We wanted to do something special to celebrate this important milestone, so we've been working on a brand logo and app icon. We are also working on some merchandising, like enamel pins and stickers. So, if you are interested, stay tuned! We hope you like it!

Here is to another year! We are very grateful for having you along with us on this journey, and of course, if you need help or want to share something with us, drop us a line at support@kiff.app. We'll love hearing from you.

See you in the next update!

PS: We've fixed an issue with food deletion.

Oops! A bug has eluded us on our latest update. But hopefully, we've caught it in time! If you have consumed or thrown away something while you had the version of the app published today (1.5.1), likely, this info hasn't been saved correctly. So, this data won't be available in future consumption insights. We are sorry about that.

This update includes some adjustments for the iOS 15 release, minor bug fixes, and performance improvements.

NEW

• Kiff will now save additional data about your food consumption on your device to give you more insights about it in a future update.

• Now you can apply changes made on the food catalog to already registered items in the app.

IMPROVEMENTS

• Improved accessibility with "Reduce motion" and "Reduce transparency" preferences.
• Fixed an issue when duplicating packaged foods.
• Other minor adjustments and improvements.

Important: This might be the last release that supports iOS 13. So if you haven't updated your device yet, consider doing so.

What's new? A lot, actually!

BARCODE SCANNING

The big star! You have been asking for it almost since our first launch. Well, you can now add packaged food faster than ever. Open up the scanner, and let's go for it:

• Scan once to add.
• Scan the same product more than once to set the stock.
• Tap on the card to add the expiration date, adjust the stock or edit its data.
• Scanning another product will archive the previous one.
• Swipe left to delete and right to archive.

Not all barcodes will work, but if Kiff doesn't recognize the product at hand, it will trigger manual form. Fill it, and next time you scan the same barcode, all the information will be there for you.

NEW NAVIGATION AND SEARCH

"Who is going to track everything in our app? People are going to add a handful of things at a time. Nobody is going to log their entire pantry!" Boy, were we wrong, and that's awesome! We have redesigned the navigation system and added a new search feature. We hope that now you can find things more easily.

FOOD CATALOG

Are you tired of adding the same info over and over again? Kiff will keep a history of all food added and prefill it for you with the new Food Catalog. You can think of it as a template catalog where you can fine-tune every detail. Want to tweak the shelf life of a particular food? Do it once, and Kiff will remember it the next time you add it.

STOCK MANAGEMENT AND CONSUME/TRASH ACTIONS

You are at the supermarket, you open Kiff, and you wonder, "Ok, onions are about to go bad this week. I need to buy more, but how many?" Now with stock tracking, you can know how many items are on your pantry and adjust your grocery shopping accordingly. Kiff can even automatically add food with low stock to a list in the system's Reminders app.

The consume or trash actions will lower the stock and lets you record what has happened with that food. You aren't going to be able to see that record for now, but be patient. We are working on something amazing behind the curtain.

OTHER FEATURES

• New food entry form.
• Food duplication.
• List sorting per filter.
• Context menus in food cards (iOS14).

IMPORTANT: This might be the last release that supports iOS13. So if you haven't updated your device yet, consider doing so.

Thank you very much for your interest in our app. If you need help or want to share something with us, drop us a line at support@kiff.app.

This update fixes some minor issues. It also includes some exciting news from the previous version, 1.4.0:

We are thrilled to share with you that we are currently working on a pretty big update that will include many new features, most of them already suggested by some of you.

Drumroll, please. Barcode scanning! Yes, we have been working really hard on making the process of adding food a little bit more frictionless. It's still in beta and needs some polish and love, but so far, it's looking fantastic. But, this isn't the only feature we are introducing in the next release. There are many more in the works, such as stock management, actions for consuming/trashing items, and a new home screen with new ways to filter and order your food.

OMG! HOW DO I TEST ALL THESE FEATURES?

You're in luck! From now on, we are giving our Kiff users access to our beta program, The Counter, where you can test all these new features before they are available to everyone.

Just go to the settings menu, and search for our new beta access. You can directly enroll in the beta program by signing in with Apple. As simple as that! If you don't see the option, be sure your network connection is working fine.

WHEN WILL IT BE AVAILABLE?

We'll be releasing this update as a TestFlight beta early next month. After a few weeks in testing mode, it will be available to everyone in the App Store.

ONE MORE THING!

We've something new you can try out right now, widgets! Keep all your food under control directly from your home screen.

As always, if you need help or want to share something with us, drop us a line at support@kiff.app. We'll love hearing from you.

Happy new year!

We're so glad to have shared this time with you and can't wait to continue improving Kiff in 2021. We've only been live for a few months, but are overwhelmed by the support and kind feedback, so thank you! Let's check out what's new.

NEW

- Shelf life reminders: We've simplified the frequency of shelf life reminders. You can now choose between receiving just one reminder the day before your food is no longer fresh or up to three notifications based on your food's shelf life. You can select your preferred mode on the settings.

- Watch over notification: You may be tracking food with notifications disabled or without shelf life and expiration date. We don't want you to forget about those items. So if you haven't used the app for a while, Kiff will send you a message to check on them. This notification is now always enabled.

IMPROVEMENTS

- We have squashed some bugs here and there, along with some UI improvements.

Are you enjoying Kiff? Or are you finding it annoying and difficult to use?

Either way, please reach out to support@kiff.app, and tell us what you love or hate about this little app. We would be more than happy to hear from you and maybe become penpals, who knows!

Until the next update!
Nerea and Asier.

Ouch! We forgot to start tracking the food we cooked yesterday! What now? Mmmm, we can track it now, but we have to remember adding a day every time we check our food's state on Kiff, *sigh*.

TRACKING FROM A PAST DATE

Don't worry! From now on, you can track any food from any past date. No matter when you remember to track something you cooked, bought, or open. Just long press the "Track" button and select the desired date. Super easy!

OTHER IMPROVEMENTS

- Toggle inputs have now a different color on iOS 14. You wouldn't even notice, but we care about this little things.

- Form animations on iOS 14 were acting weird. They should work fine now.

- From now on, when you edit an item, Kiff will remember your icon selection. It will only suggest a new one, if you delete the name entirely.

- Other minor adjustments and improvements.

Hope you keep enjoying Kiff!

We are super excited to present Kiff v1.2.0 to you. We have quite a few new features, so here we go!

NEW

- You don't need to choose an icon when adding your food anymore! Kiff will select one for you as you type. If you want, you can always change it by clicking on the icon.
- Don't forget about your spoiled food. Now, Kiff notifies you when your food has been expired or not fresh for five days. You can launch the associated quick actions by long pressing this notification.
- New quick actions from the app icon. Long press Kiff's icon to quickly view or add new groceries and leftovers.
- From now on, if you tap on any notification they will take you directly to the food detail.
- Notifications are enabled by default when you add a new grocery or leftover with shelf-life or expiration date.
- Kiff remembers in which section you were (groceries or leftovers) once you close the app.

If you think any icon suggestion is missing when you add your food, let us know by writing to us at support@kiff.app, so we can take them into account for future updates.

We hope you are enjoying Kiff!

NEW

- New notification badge. See how many groceries or leftovers are about to expire or stop being fresh without opening the app.

- Also, the expiration and shelf life notifications will now appear grouped independently in your notification center. This makes it easier to differentiate between products that are about to expire and those going to stop being fresh.

Other improvements:

- New icons in the settings menu.
- We have improved accessibility with VoiceOver.
- Other minor adjustments and improvements.
