About Medway: Linking the Lines

Explore Europe’s military history with Linking the Lines. An interactive trail based app series in which you can discover fortifications and heritage sites in Medway UK, Vauban’s fortifications in France, Malta, Venice and The Netherlands.

Europe was forged through peace and war – lands exchanged hands over centuries and allies became foes many times over. Skilled engineers travelled across the continent and shared their knowledge of warfare and fortifications. Defence lines evolved as rapidly as techniques of attack. Some formed borders that remain today, while others are long forgotten.

In 2012, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the European Union to mark longstanding peace between nations. Yet what military heritage has lost in terms of purpose, it has gained it importance. It today stands as a unique testimony to the course of European history and to human ingenuity.

Whichever site you have chosen to visit, the Linking the Lines app will help enrich your appreciation of its unique place in the history of enmity and alliance across Europe.
