• And if you didn’t already know, the audio player works with CarPlay.

Sometimes when fetching a playlist from the server, and instead of telling you that, we said it was empty. We do not believe in lies, and hope to make amends with this fix.

“Hello darkness, my old friend”. That’s right—Dark Mode is now available within the app!

• With the tap of a button in Settings, the app can go from “light and cheery” to “crushing darkness reminiscent of the void in which all of existence sprang.” It’s that easy!
• Or, if you prefer more of a hands-off approach to things, the app will automatically switch from light to dark using the system-level Dark Mode schedule set on your device. Your phone’s natural Circadian rhythm will be respected. Nature always finds a way.
• Have a complex personality? Enjoy the dichotomy of a dark user interface, with a light background in the reader? Dark Mode for the app works independent of the color settings of the app’s reading interface, so you can tailor the app’s appearance to appease your conscious (and unconscious) Jungian preferences.

Want to change the way you read? Prefer to swipe between pages instead of scrolling? Now there are two ways to change this:
- While reading a book, use the new improved icon under the “Aa” menu.
- On the settings tab of the app, use the “Pagination Mode” setting.

We’ve been improving the O’Reilly app just for you! Here’s what’s new.

• The Learning Path player now shows the proper toolbars when switching from videos to chapters in learning paths.
• The app also has some new behind-the-scenes improvements to the way we handle video and chapter information for a smoother experience.

This release includes a new approach to viewing your history — synchronized across web and all your devices! We've also added a new way to view your progress at a simple glance. Here are a few other things that are new:

- Live Online Training information is cached locally, which makes them quicker to load
- Bugs that surfaced in recent versions of iOS have been squashed

Your O'Reilly is now the first tab and is displayed when you start up the app, giving you access to your recent activity, any of your upcoming or past Live Online Trainings, and a single tap to your playlists and downloads.

Some small improvements and bug fixes.

This release contains fixes for a number of bugs and crashes people have been experiencing lately. Of note:

• Book reading progress calculations are more accurate
• The share sheet now supports sharing chapters or individual videos

- Playlists are now visible for users with expired accounts.
- The current navigation screen highlights the tab bar icon.

Fixed a crash that was happening on the Playlists screen.

This update includes the following improvements:

- Fixes an issue that prevented some users from seeing all registered Live Online Trainings
- Fixes an issue that could cause a potential crash during startup
- Fixes an issue that could cause a crash related to searching within a downloaded book

Various bug fixes

This release is packed with new features and improvements to enhance your O'Reilly experience. Here's a rundown of what's new:

- Sign in with your social accounts! We now support using Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Google to sign in to O'Reilly.
Clearer navigation! We've moved your O'Reilly Playlists, Downloads, and Live Online Training sessions to a new section called Your O'Reilly. Explore Expert Playlists, trending content, and more on the Discover tab.
- Share your playlists! You can now open up your playlists to the public by visiting your playlist's page, tapping the menu button on the top right, and choosing "Share Settings."

We've also taken some time to squash several bugs and improve the overall speed and performance of the app.

We've squashed a bug that caused disconnects for some users trying to sign in through their companies' single-sign-on portals.

- Fixed a bug that affected maintaining accurate reading progress
- Popup menus in the reader are now dismissed at appropriate times
- Jumping to a highlight in the reader will make sure it isn’t hiding under the top bar in the app

This release fixes a bug that was preventing users from scrolling in the reader after a highlight was created.

- Learning Paths which had lost their topics have now found them
- Search results from the iOS home screen now have more detail

- iOS 13 certainly proved unlucky for our app. This release has a whole set of fixes that should improve the visual appearance of the app as well as fixing all position-related issues when jumping to content in the reader
- Some users were getting logged out before their time. This is fixed now
- Screens opened to show a Live Online Training can now be dismissed
- For conferences: dates on the other side of the international date line from the user now render correctly; sponsors are now sorted alphabetically within tier
- Improvements to the reader when displaying math equations
- Updated some of our screens to improve visual accessibility

This release focuses on improvements to the Live Online Trainings experience in the app, including the following updates:
- Added the ability to view recordings of past Live Online Trainings
- Tapping on a Live Online Training now shows an course overview and schedule

- Some conferences’ schedules were sorted into incorrect days; not anymore!
- Some of our conferences far in the future don’t have detailed session information yet. So for those conferences, we launch you to web page that gives the most up-to-date conference details available.
- Playlists matching “Topics You Follow” are now more accurate.
- Our “Expert Playlist” banner has been color-corrected for users with visual accessibility needs.

- Ongoing Live Online Trainings can once again be viewed in the app.
- Crashes, old and new, were addressed.

We’ve significantly revamped and improved our downloader - meaning faster and more responsive downloads, and fewer errors.
- The Downloads Manager now shows the size of individual downloads. The total size of all downloads is still available in Settings.
- We identified a bug that was preventing a small amount of users from accessing their downloaded content. The good news is that we fixed the bug! The bad news is that those affected will need to redownload their content.

We’ve made some adjustments to the way video clips work! Now whenever you tap a video clip from search or from a playlist, the app takes you directly to it instead of sending you through the overall chapter list first.

This version also contains a variety of bug fixes and performance improvements.

Zapped some bugs related to conferences

• Conference support in the app continues to grow! Information about speakers at conferences, including full bios and links to the sessions they are presenting are now available directly in the app.
• We cleaned up some pesky bugs that were logging out users and deleting downloads

- Get notifications and a countdown timer for your registered Live Online Trainings.
- Create your own schedule for an upcoming conference by saving sessions to “My Schedule”.
- See coffee breaks and other session types in the conference schedules
- View conference schedules offline, if you’ve previously viewed them.
- The text in the conference schedules should be a bit easier to read

- View your registered Live Online Trainings from the Discover view
- Minor improvements to Events and Playlists UX

This release contains a handful of fixes for common issues.

- The Events section tidied itself up a bit: web links now launch modally, a few buttons have been sewn back on, and some pixels have been pushed for maximum effect.
- Our video player no longer crashes when you try to bring up the video’s chapter list.
- A few other smaller bugs have been squashed.

Upcoming conferences can now be seen in the app!
- See all upcoming events, or explore events by topics of interest.
- Tap an upcoming event to see speakers, schedule, or even register.
Also, for those users who were seeing a never-ending spinner during sign-in, this release should deliver some relief.

This update addresses the following issues:

- Syncing Playlists between the app and the web is more efficient
- Fixed occurrences where a swipe back from a title’s detail/info view might not work reliably
- Fixed an issue that caused Learning Path cover images to be missing from Discover

• You can now search for content in your O’Reilly account using global search in iOS! Pull down from the top of your device, type in the name of a book or playlist, and you will jump to that content in the app.
• If you have added individual chapters from a Learning Path into your playlist, these are now visible in the app.
• Tapping on images in the reader no longer opens them full screen until you lift your finger. This prevents them from opening as you scroll, making it much easier to scroll past images, particularly full screen images.
• Tapping on a chapter or video clip from search or a playlist takes you directly to that content.
• The bug that caused highlights to disappear has been fixed—you should see all of your highlights all of the time.
• The app is more conservative in when it asks for a review. Please email support@oreilly.com if you’re still seeing an excess of app review requests.
• Individual video clips saved to a playlist can now be downloaded.

Learning Paths are here!

Alongside the existing support for our vast library of books and videos, we’ve now added support for our expert-curated Learning Paths. You can find them in search, add them to playlists, and read and watch them just like you would any other content. Let us know what you think!

Other new features and improvements with this release include:

- Book chapters and video clips can be viewed directly from search results
- Book chapters and video clips discovered in Search or stored in Playlists now display the book or video series it belongs to.
- Downloads over cellular data are now disabled by default (this can be toggled in Settings)
- Fixed a crash that could occur when filtering search results by publishing date
- Fixed a crash that could occur when refreshing Playlists or Downloads with many items
- Fixed an issue with accurately displaying download state of full video series in Playlists

This release contains a major rewrite our the text reader. All existing functionality continues to be supported, but the following new features have been added:

- Stream It: Books can now be read via streaming. No need to download a book before starting to read it! Book content will be fetched as needed. Downloading for offline viewing is still 100% supported.

- Customize It: Your reading experience can now be customized. Margins, line height, and font size can be adjusted to your liking. In addition to day and night mode, there is now a sepia mode because sometimes your eyes want a little compromise.

- Highlight It: You can pull to refresh your highlights list from within the reader to sync with web and other devices. You can also add notes to a highlight from the list of highlights.

- Preview It: We’ve added a new detail screen for items with a summary of their contents. You can also download a book directly from this screen.

Position syncing between web and devices has been improved. You will be prompted to jump to your most recent location if a change is detected after you start reading a book.

When upgrading from older versions of the app, upgrades are faster, reducing the number of hangs when starting up.

Individual video clips in playlists can now be downloaded separately.

Users with previously downloaded books will need to re-download after this update. Downloaded videos are unaffected.

This release adopts our latest branding guidelines to bring you a streamlined experience on the O'Reilly Learning Platform.

This release addresses a few pesky crashes that showed up in the last release:
- when an incorrect password is entered
- when using the share button on the new preview screen on Discover on an iPad.

For those of you who like to watch videos at hyperspeed, the bug which affected video playback at higher speeds has been fixed.

Buckle up - there’s much to see in this new release!

As soon as you start up the app, you’ll notice the fresh new redesign of the Discover screen. No longer are you limited to just seeing the newly added titles. Now you can see trending titles, recommended titles, the last read title on your device, and recently added titles (they aren’t gone all together, just not the only game in town).

Tap on any item in the new home screen to see information about that item, and use quick actions to add it to a playlist or share it. Tapping on the title or cover brings you to the full page of information for that item.

You’ll have to go to your favorite restaurant for a burger now that we’ve replaced the hamburger menu in the app with a new tab bar at the bottom. It’s now easier than ever to switch between your playlists, downloads, and finding new titles.

Need to log out or want to see details about your current account? At the bottom of the Settings screen, you’ll see information on your current account as well as a “Sign Out” button.

We’ve given a big overhaul to the way you log into and out of the app. This should hopefully reduce or eliminate the activity spinners and grey screens upon logging in that some users were experiencing.

To make it harder to accidentally delete downloaded content, we’ll check with you before removing an item from a playlist if it has been downloaded.

Need to know how many pages are in a book? Our Book Detail page now shows that information!

• The app was a bit too aggressive in determining whether or not an expired title still belonged in your library. This release reins those checks in and only expires the content if there is a 100% chance it is gone.
• Missing closed captions on videos? This release brings them back.
• Continued bug hunt to address crashes when loading up your playlists or downloads screens.

Like the best prepared picnic at the end of summer, the last release had a few unintended bugs show up. This release squashes them, fixing a few crashes. Enjoy!

• Want to dive right back into your latest book or video? Our new “Continue” bar on the Playlists screen makes it easy to resume your last read book or watched video with a single tap.
• Now you can jump directly to a book or video chapter from the Table of Contents in the Book or Video detail page.
• Does the book you're reading contain TIFFs? If so, we can now display them!
• After you’re done downloading all of the videos in a series, our activity spinner should stop spinning. (It hadn't gotten the memo.)
• iPad Pro users rejoice at seeing even more content at once now that we give you slightly smaller horizontal margins.
• Downloads are faster now that we are taking advantage of caching on our servers.
•A handful of our most common crashes have been fixed.

NEW!
• Search inside your playlists by title, author, publisher, or topic to find all those Docker, Kotlin, and React books you forgot you added!
• It's now possible to embiggen a title's cover art by tapping on it. Enhance. Enhance. ENHANCE!

FIXED
• Some screens often transitioned clumsily. They're now much more graceful and mindful of their appearance.
• A few users might have experienced a crash when using both the website and the app at the same time. That's fixed now.
• The app sometimes had a spell of amnesia for enterprise customers. Its long-term memory has been restored.
• Authentication within the app has been made a bit more streamlined and performant under-the-hood.
• Tapping through search results in a book would occasionally misfire. We've thinned out the mix and it hums along nicely now.
• Have an odd number of items in your playlist? Swiping to delete on an iPad doesn't look so off now.
• Video sizes are now being reported correctly under Storage.

- If your account was expired, you might have noticed the app crashed a lot. We fixed that.
- A database migration error occurred during upgrades causing some downloads to disappear. That's been tidied up as well.

- Duplicating a playlist is now supported in the app. Copy away!
- Shared playlists now include follower counts for a nice boost to your ego.
- Filtering between your playlists and others' shared playlists has never been easier! (Because it wasn't possible before. It is now.)
- Playlists are a bit more steadfast and hardy when recovering from loading hiccups and errors.
- Downloading chapters and reading them offline has been made less prone to odd behaviors in the app.
- We've moved our privacy policy front-and-center before using the app.
- The local database has been given some love to make things a bit snappier.
- A crash related to deleting lots of downloads at a time has been fixed.
- A crash that occurred when deleting a reordered item in a playlist has been fixed.
- The checkmark that displays after downloading content has returned after a long vacation.
- Trying to login with the same account twice would fail miserably. It should now succeed.
- We've successfully removed the word "book" on some "video" screens. It's the details that matter...

We're happy to announce Playlists is now available for our enterprise users — giving you a new way to save, organize, and share content across all your devices in a way that makes sense to you! You can easily share the playlists you create across your organization so everyone can access the same list of content they need to engage, upskill, and improve productivity. Playlists replaces today's Queue feature. Playlists continues to be available to our individual users.

We've been a bit busy in other areas of the app too. Searching for content has gotten a lot more powerful inside the app!
- Search by keyword, title, author, and publisher for quickly finding the information you need.
- Do you find yourself searching for the same thing often? Recent searches are now only a tap away.
- More robust searches allow you to mix and match filters so you can finally find that video series on binary lambda calculus from 2012.
- Type-ahead searching moves at the speed of your fingertips to provide fast autocomplete suggestions.

And, we've fixed some bugs that were overstaying their welcome:
- Scrolling on Bluetooth keyboards has been fixed.
- Some cover images were failing to load for users in the background. The app is now a bit quieter about it.
- Occasionally, the app became a bit flustered when attempting to handle images in the reader. We've steadied its hand.
- Watching a video from the table of contents would on occasion end in a crash. Now, tapping a video from the table of contents will end in watching a video.

- Occasionally, some videos wouldn't start playing automatically. They have been prodded along to prevent an extra tap.
- Need some more time in your life? Swiping to delete has been sped up to remove a half-second delay. Life is too short to wait on deletions.
