Pleco Chinese Dictionary Description
Pleco is the ultimate Chinese learning companion: an integrated dictionary / document reader / flashcard system with fullscreen handwriting input and live OCR, from a company that's been making the world's best mobile Chinese learning apps since 2001.

Major features: ($ = paid add-on)

• Amazing dictionaries. We offer two free built-in dictionaries: the popular open-source CC-CEDICT, with over 110,000 frequently-updated entries, and our own PLC dictionary, with 125,000 entries, parts of speech, and over 25,000 example sentences (with Pinyin). More than two dozen other dictionaries are available as free and paid ($) add-ons, including licensed titles from well-known publishers like Oxford, Longman, FLTRP, Tuttle, SLPH, and Commercial Press.

• Powerful merged search: look up words by Chinese characters, Pinyin (spaces / tones optional), or English, with support for wildcards and full-text search. And no need to tediously flip between all of those dictionaries to find a word - just type in your search term and instantly get a combined, frequency-sorted result list.

• Links and cross-references: easily look up character components, break down words into individual characters, look up lists of words containing a particular character, and search across all dictionaries for example sentences containing a word.

• Gorgeous typography: see it for yourself in our screenshots - we think we're one of the best-looking Chinese dictionaries around. Alternate Kai/Song/Xing-style Chinese fonts are also available ($).

• PRC/HK/Taiwan-friendly: every part of Pleco supports both traditional and simplified, headword readings can be shown in Pinyin and Zhuyin, and some dictionaries even support Cantonese. (note: stroke order diagrams do support traditional characters, but use PRC order)

• Audio: Hear Mandarin and Cantonese for words and example sentences using iOS' free built-in text-to-speech system. We also offer add-ons ($) with native-speaker Mandarin recordings and higher-quality Mandarin TTS.

• Document Reader: bring in text from the clipboard and tap on words in it to instantly look them up. Upgrade ($) adds support for tap-lookups in text, HTML, DOC, DOCX, PDF, and EPUB files. We also offer graded readings ($).

• OCR: look up words simply by pointing your device's camera at them, or by tapping on them in a still image. ($)

• Fullscreen handwriting: use your device's whole screen instead of just a little box. Extremely accurate and highly tolerant of stroke order mistakes. (enhanced $)

• Flashcards: create a card from any dictionary entry with a single button tap, import premade word lists, use advanced memorization techniques like SRS, and study in a variety of modes including fill-in-the-blanks handwriting and tone drills. ($)

• Stroke Order Diagrams: animations showing you how to draw each character; 500 characters for free, 28,000 in paid ($) version.

• User dictionaries: create new dictionary entries right on your device as you encounter new words. ($)

• No ads.

We also offer famously excellent customer support and an active user community at http://www.plecoforums.com. And we're constantly working to make our products better; our sales and customer base have been growing for two decades across 4 different platforms. You can be confident that we'll still be fixing bugs and adding features for years to come.

Paid add-ons can be transferred to other devices that link to your iTunes account just like any other paid iTunes content; simply install our free app, open up the "Add-ons" screen, and tap on the "Restore Purchases" button to activate your purchase on each device.

Please contact us at support@pleco.com, via the form at http://www.pleco.com/contact.html, or using the in-app "Contact Support" command with any questions - we'll be delighted to hear from you.

Also, on upcoming products: yes, we're still working on 4.0, it's unspeakably awesome (it's more-or-less the only thing we've been working on for the past 3-and-a-half years) and we plan to provide more details on new features / release plans very soon. (but to assuage any concerns, no, we're not going to make you sign up for a subscription to keep using Pleco or anything evil like that - add-ons will still be one-time purchases, and any functionality you have should be accessible in the new version without your needing to buy it again [though you may need to pay to access some newly-added functionality])

Previously:
3.2.22:
• Bug fixes (one old bug and two new ones), plus the recent search history button option is also available on iPads in interface modes when the iPad would not otherwise show that button (split-screen or definition hidden).
3.2.21:

• Added support for paid e-books; we aren't actually launching any today, but expect an announcement on that front shortly.
• Built a few hundred demo stroke order diagrams into our app (as we already do on other platforms) rather than requiring a separate download. (this will only apply to new installs; if you've already installed Pleco, you can download the demo of stroke order diagrams in "Add-ons" / "Features" to get access to those few hundred characters for free)

Previously in 3.2.20:

• Added a long-requested option in Settings / Audio to specify which TTS voice should be used to play Mandarin headwords.
• Added new 'enhanced' TTS audio databases for our Hong, Qiang, Kayan, and Kaho text-to-speech voices; they're free if you own those voices + can be downloaded in "Add-ons" / "Purchased but not downloaded." • New options to adjust the volume of individual audio/TTS voices (Settings / Audio) and to add a recent search history popup button to the toolbar on iPhones (Settings / Search Interface).
• Some modest performance optimizations, mostly in long documents.

• Massively updated our built-in PLC dictionary, adding tons of new words / definitions / examples and, by extremely high popular demand, parts of speech.
• Added a long-requested option in Settings / Audio to specify which TTS voice should be used to play Mandarin headwords.
• Added new 'enhanced' TTS audio databases for our Hong, Qiang, Kayan, and Kaho text-to-speech voices; they're free if you own those voices + can be downloaded in "Add-ons" / "Purchased but not downloaded." (if you don't own them yet, their "Add-ons" pages have been updated with separate enhanced audio previews to listen to, and we've made all of our TTS previews a lot longer)

Newish things to take a look at:
• New expanded Essentials Edition of the popular Outlier character dictionary.
• Military Mandarin Lexicon, a great new dictionary of PRC military terminology
• ABC Cantonese Dictionary
• New Mandarin + Cantonese TTS voices
• New free Source Han Serif Chinese font (Song-style), in Add-ons / Features.
• "New Century English-Chinese Dictionary" in Add-ons, a brand new (published in 2016), comprehensive (240k entries), example-rich (130k examples) English-to-Chinese dictionary based on the Collins corpus.
• Experimental Kai-style stroke order diagrams, free in Add-ons if you already own our stroke order add-on.
• More generous stroke order demo if you don't own that add-on yet - download that demo in Add-ons (of the original or the experimental Kai diagrams) and you can now see stroke order for several hundred common characters in the main dictionary.
• Our experimental OCR system update (coming officially in 4.0) - Settings / OCR / New OCR System - with a completely revamped motion detection system that should feel much less jittery than before.

Upcoming things:
• Couple of other new dictionaries + something that isn't quite a dictionary but that we hope you'll love anyway.
• Giant Pleco 4.0 update, 10 years in the making (and our primary focus for the past ~2 years), with a giant spectacular overhaul of our flashcard system + OCR and a bunch of other neat stuff. (release date TBD but we're getting closer and closer...)

Reviews: the App Store no longer resets our review average with every update (yay!), but if you haven't left us a review recently, we'd really appreciate it if you would - after this one, you hopefully shouldn't need to do it again for quite a while...
3.2.23 2017-10-25
3.2.23:
• Made another attempt to fix the startup freeze issue that's affecting a small % of our customers with iOS 11.
• As a fallback in case this latest attempt doesn't work, added a 'Fix Startup Freezes' option to our *system* settings screen (system Settings app / Pleco) which should definitively fix the issue by avoiding the relevant code altogether. (the downside is that it will also totally disable iCloud sync, but it should at least allow you to keep using Pleco while we figure this out)

Previously:
3.2.22:
• Bug fixes (one old bug and two new ones), plus the recent search history button option is also available on iPads in interface modes when the iPad would not otherwise show that button (split-screen or definition hidden).

3.2.18 2017-07-12
See our new ABC Cantonese dictionary + 5 new text-to-speech voices in "Add-ons," along with a big new update to the Outlier character dictionary.

Changes:
• Numerous changes in support of new + upcoming dictionaries, like support for tone coloring in Cantonese example sentences for ABC Cantonese, support for larger + colored embedded images for the Outlier dictionary, and improved support for searches containing digits for a forthcoming new dictionary.
• Increased audio volume of our TTS voices to match up with that of the built-in iOS one.
• Made the mute switch work for all auto-playing audio, both in flashcards and in the popup reader.
• Various minor bug fixes.

Newish things to take a look at:
• ABC Cantonese Dictionary and new Cantonese (and Mandarin) TTS voices.
• New 1.1 update to the popular Outlier character dictionary.
• New free Source Han Serif Chinese font (Song-style), in Add-ons / Features.

This is a *huge* upgrade, with 40,000 new entries, 12,000 new example sentences, parts of speech for most entries, and many thousands of corrections and bug fixes.
• New Outlier Mini dictionary, first early mini release of a major new Chinese-English dictionary of character etymology - paid add-on but with the price credited towards a purchase of the full Outlier dictionary once it's ready.

As always, since the App Store resets our review average with every update, we'd really appreciate it if you'd leave another review - don't have to write anything, just the star button will do. We hate the fact that other developers put up nag screens asking for reviews, and would never do that ourselves, but reviews help us show up more prominently in search results, which leads to more users / more money to improve Pleco.
3.2.17 2017-05-20
Warning: we've updated our paid text-to-speech engines in this release, so if you've purchased one or both of those, you'll need to download a data file update (~60 MB each) to keep using them. If you use our TTS frequently, we'd recommend opening Pleco and updating those data files immediately after installing this update, so that you won't find yourself unable to use TTS at an inopportune moment.

Changes:
• Bug fixes (PDF bookmark saving, disappearing input method bar, etc)
• Usability improvements (auto-play flashcard audio now respects the mute switch, flashcard backups now tappable in File Manager, etc)

Newish things to take a look at:
• New free Source Han Serif Chinese font (Song-style), in Add-ons / Features.

Upcoming things:
• ABC Cantonese Dictionary and new Cantonese (and Mandarin) TTS voices, hopefully out in June. (they're already ready on our end, we're just waiting on some business-related stuff)
• Couple of other new dictionaries + something that isn't quite a dictionary but that we hope you'll love anyway.
• Big 1.1 update to Outlier Mini.
• Giant Pleco 4.0 update, 10 years in the making (and our primary focus for the past ~2 years), with a giant spectacular overhaul of our flashcard system + OCR and a bunch of other neat stuff. (release date TBD but we're getting closer and closer...)

3.2.16 2017-02-16
Changes:
• Bug fixes. (among others: 不/一 tone sandhi now work correctly when reading headwords with our TTS add-ons)
• Hyperlinks now work correctly in Outlier dictionary usage notes - note that they still won't work in some entries until we update the Outlier database (should be in a few days).
• Full-width */? wildcard characters are now supported in searches.

This is a *huge* upgrade, with 40,000 new entries, 12,000 new example sentences, parts of speech for most entries, and many thousands of corrections and bug fixes. We don't expect people will find any problems with this that are worse than the bugs in the old PLC, but we're doing a beta anyway just to be safe.
• New Outlier Mini dictionary, first early mini release of a major new Chinese-English dictionary of character etymology - paid add-on but with the price credited towards a purchase of the full Outlier dictionary once it's ready.
• Updates to many add-on dictionaries in "Add-ons."
