About Poker Odds Teacher

Don’t just memorize the odds, *understand* them ... This app teaches you a general method for estimating the odds for just about any Texas Hold’em scenario in your head in real time.

No in-app purchases/fees.
Continual improvement for many years.

Note:

(1)
This is a challenging app. You need to be pretty good at doing basic math operations in your head. For example, what’s the value of:

16% * 20%

We’ve added a “Math” help button to show you how to calculate this in your head. One way is, 20% means one-fifth. One-fifth of 16% is (16% / 5), which is a little more than 3%. 3.2% to be exact. Or, convert to decimals, multiply, then convert back to %age’s.

(2)
This app uses specific hand situations, and some people don’t see the value in this because in real life play we don’t know our opponents’ cards. There’s still value in specific hand situations, because they’re the building blocks that we can use to put together and estimate the odds for more complex hand range situations. For example every good player should know the odds for specific hand situations like AJ vs. QQ pre-flop, or FlushDraw vs. TopPair on the flop. Our other apps e.g. PokerCruncher handle both specific hands and hand ranges.

Poker trainers, odds tables, etc. are useful tools but do they help you learn why the odds are what they are or are you just memorizing specific situations? And you can’t use these tools or odds/equity calculators in the middle of a live hand (would you really want to?; could be a “fish” tell :)). This app takes a new and different approach to poker odds - understanding instead of memorizing, so you can handle any situation that comes your way.

Our odds estimation method is a pretty simple 3-step procedure. First you count your outs and estimate your odds of improving (using for example the "Rule of 4&2"; this app shows you how). Then you consider your opponent’s counter-outs. Then you put the two together to come up with a good odds estimate.

We’ve provided about 20 common and important pre-flop and post-flop scenarios for you to practice the method on. This app will take you through the 3 steps for each practice scenario, one screen per step, and will make sure that you’re on track towards a good odds estimate each step of the way, correcting you if needed. We’ve provided info/help buttons for each sub-step.

You might be thinking, how can you cover a game as complex as Texas Hold’em in 20 scenarios? Well, we agree, you can’t! But this app is about learning a general method not many specific situations, and we picked these 20 scenarios to cover a good cross-section of common and important pre-flop and post-flop situations. If you understand how to calculate the odds for say one generic TopPair vs TopPairTopKicker scenario or one representative Pair vs LowerPair pre-flop scenario, you’ll be able to apply your knowledge to other similar situations easily.

Now, we’re not saying that you’re going to master this in 5 or 10 minutes. You’re going to have to practice the method more than a few times, think about the outs and counter-outs, and do simple math operations in your head - basic +, -, *, /; let’s not let our math teachers down :). We hope you feel that acquiring this odds skill and knowledge is more than worth the learning/practice time.

What's New in the Latest Version 9.2

Last updated on Oct 24, 2022
Old Versions
1) A very small math fix in the TopPair vs. FlushDraw scenario’s step-by-step tutorial:
* In the Step 2 - Counter-Outs screen, say Player1 has 1 counter-out not 0 counter-outs, and explain why.
* This changes the final Equity answer in Step 3 by only 1%, from 36% to 35%.
* Thanks to customer B.Z. for spotting this; great eye and attention to detail.

2) Small wording improvements in a few other scenarios’ Step 1 and Step 2 explanations (no math changes).

Minor update: improve the app's App Store icon.

Remove Apple's shine effect on the top half of the app's icon; makes the icon sharper and better looking.

1) Explain what "outs" means on the main screen and in Step 1's instructions. Some iTunes reviews said that the app doesn't explain this. Note: The "i" help buttons of each sub-step explain the sub-steps further.

2) UI improvements and fixes for iPhone 4 and iOS 4:
* Add a double-resolution app icon for iPhone 4.
* Make text fit better in the menus and screens, improve wording in some instructions and notes.
* Make save/restore app state work correctly on iOS 4; the app state was getting wiped out if you killed the app after suspending it (not a big bug - just the 2 color cards vs. 4 color cards setting).

3) Add more Help buttons in the Menu: visit our website, email support, tell a friend about the app, write an iTunes review, etc.
1.6
Mar 9, 2010
Clarify the last step's (step 3's) answer result screen:

** Show (1): the app's method's expected answer, in addition to (2): your estimate and (3): the actual (exact) answer (obtained e.g. from an odds calculator). Up til now the app has been showing only the latter two ((2) and (3)).

Note that the app's method only gives a good estimate, not the exact answer. Thanks to a couple of customers for suggesting this clarification.

Small UI improvements:
** Move "Cancel" button to the bottom of the list in all menus, per standard UI convention.
** Show a confirmation alert when the card colors setting has been changed/set.
1.5
Dec 19, 2009
Improve the usability of the sliders as suggested by a couple of iTunes reviews:

** Indent the sliders on the left side instead of placing them flush against the left side of the screen.

** Instead of using slider min/max values 0%..100%, use 0%..75% or 0%..50% (depending on the slider) so that specific %age values are easier to select.

** Use min/max values 0..15 for the number of outs sliders instead of 0..21, again to make specific values easier to select.

Thank you for writing the reviews and letting us know how to improve this.
1.4
Nov 12, 2009
Improve the layout of the 3 main groups' select scenario popup lists. They don't scroll now so the buttons are easier to tap.
1.3
Oct 6, 2009
** 4-color cards for easier readability of suits.

** New (saved) setting in the Menu for 2-color or 4-color.

Thanks to PokerCruncher's TwoPlusTwo forum posters for these suggestions.
1.2
Aug 15, 2009
Fix a small bug that's visible only on iPhone OS 3.0 - the last scenario in each of the 3 groups wasn't being shown in the popup lists. So now 3 more scenarios are visible.
1.1
May 22, 2009
As you suggested:

** Added about 10 more practice scenarios.

** Reworded Step3's instructions to make the %age adjustment (the subtraction) for counter-outs clearer.

Thank you for your reviews and emails.
