Hello, hello, is this thing on? We've had our heads down working on this all-new version of the app. Seriously, we built it from scratch. A little hard to write release notes when everything is new, but here we go...

The main experience of the app is a news briefing written by our reporters around the world and augmented by insights from our members. That's the biggest change for existing users: Now only members can leave contributions on stories. We hope you'll consider supporting Quartz's journalism by becoming a member.

We also got rid of following people and topics, so we no longer display a feed of what you're following, either. Instead, we poured all of our energy into making the home tab as good as it can be.

Our push notifications have been totally overhauled—both how they work and how we write them. We think you'll love the new experience. You can learn more and customize the notifications you receive in settings.

Quartz members will also find their experience in the app is much improved. We've got a new tab where you can find our latest member-exclusive reporting and an archive of every field guide.

Oh, and dark mode. We've got one, and it's so beautiful, you might be tempted to leave it on all the time.

Those are the highlights. You'll find plenty more that's new as you use the app. You might even find some bugs, which we hope you'll send, along with any feedback about this new version, to support+app@qz.com. Thanks!

-An op-ed that explored the impact that schooling has on the career disparity between girls and boys sparked a great discussion. Craig Suckling, the head of data, analytics and AI at IAG Loyalty, wrote: "A large part of confidence comes from knowing that your opinion will count because you have seen positive examples of leaders who fit your profile thriving. The more we can rebalance our c-suites with female leadership the more confidence and inspiration this will instill in women joining the workplace. Time to break up the boys clubs in the boardrooms!"

-Adèle Salin-Cantegrel, founding executive at InvestigativeWorld, wrote: "What the author describes here ressembles quite a lot to the impostor syndrome. A « disease » that affects preferentially women (and minorities) and severely hinders their capacity to outperform men in the workplace."

[Product Updates]
-You can now put your website, LinkedIn page, or any url of your choice into your profile.

-We've created a new button on your My Feed to make it easier to edit and customize your personal feed.

-We've updated the free trial period for the Quartz Membership to 7 days.

[Community Highlights]
-There was a great discussion in the last week about a think piece arguing for the necessity for children to feel bored. Doria Lavagnino, president and co-founder of Centsai, wrote: ""Agree that we have become completely child centric as a society. Children should not only learn how to cope with boredom but other unpleasant feelings. To be fair, often children want to fend for themselves. And we interfere because we want to protect them.""

-Another discussion centered around whether we should delete Instagram, as the delete Facebook movement strengthens. But as Jason Bender, the director of digital strategy at TED Conferences, pointed out: ""Over the cries of pitchfork-wielding users, Mark Zuckerberg announces record profits to the cheers of public investors. What a complicated and confusing world we live in.""

[Product Updates]
-We've fixed a bug that was causing the app to crash often for some users.

-We added a new group of Pros, ranging from artist and astronaut Nicole Stott to ex-deputy governor of Illinois Bradley Tusk to Microsoft executive vice president Peggy Johnson, and more! Check them out and make sure to follow them for their insights.

-Over the weekend, the New York Times story on the startups rejecting venture capital garnered a great discussion with many startup founders, investors and others who work in related areas chiming in.

-Melinda Caughill, CMO at i65 Medicare Software, wrote: ""As a startup founder who doesn't fit the cookie cutter image of what an investor typically funds, I'm cheering this movement. The VC model is so broken and one-sided.""

-Jeanna Liu, a tech banker, wrote: ""As someone who makes a living raising later-stage growth capital for startups and helping them exit, I have seen too many startups who should never have taken VC funding suffer the consequences...But VCs are not villains here. The reality is that they are just one type of capital suitable for only a small segment of business-model-specific companies. They should not be viewed as the default method for funding growth.""

-Peter Neeves, director of expert's community at CentSai, wrote: ""I think it's somewhat of a misrepresentation that VC firms are pushing businesses to fail. They lose money when businesses fail...They're pushing businesses to grow extremely rapidly. There's a lot of risk involved. But they take that risk with an expectation that it will work.""

Thanks for being part of the the Quartz community. We've made some more improvements.

[Product updates]
- You're now able to tap anywhere on a story block to take you into the comment stream of the story; previously, if you tapped the image, nothing would happen.
- You can now scroll through and see all the Picks and Comments saved on your own or others' profile.
- We've fixed a bug that was causing some users' app to crash upon opening up Editor's Picks.
- We tweaked our email sign-up verification system to enable users with short unique email domains to sign up using that email.

[Community highlights]
- An NBC News story about how Americans see themselves to never be able to pay off their debt brought a lot of thoughtful comments to the table. Gastao De Figueiredo of Microsoft wrote: "An overhaul of 'credit rating' and the role the big 3 (FICO, Equifax, Transunion) play in this mess is much needed." Russ Lilly, formerly a managing director at FedEx, wrote: "What a shame we have allowed credit card companies to induce individuals into digging a hole of debt one will never climb out of...they make it far too easy for people to make bad decisions."
- It's all about the millennial burnout - The Buzzfeed story incited a lot of passionate takes, including a Quartzy take about how becoming a mother helped editor Jessanne Collins prioritize and combat burnout. A great comment on the original story: "As a millennial nearing the end of my college career, I look forward to hopefully finding a job just so I can have a Monday-Friday workweek...There is never a point when I reach the end of my to-do list and I don't have something sitting on my conscious - a paper to research, a night shift to work, music to practice, bills I know I can't pay no matter how many shifts I pick up...'Never look down on anybody unless you're helping them up.,'" noted Sara Wynn, a student at Murray State University.
- Jessanne wrote in her piece: "When I had a baby, everything changed...one I wasn't expecting: Life got simpler. Prioritization had never been easier." In response, Jessica Nish, an educator who's also a millennial mom, wrote: "I totally relate to everything this author said, especially when the author said that they felt less free but it wasn't bad. ...IMO you don't want to just rush into having kids if you’re not in a relatively stable emotional/financial situation, but IMO you also don’t want to wait until you’ve “made it” with your career and all of your trips and everything fully “stable” to then have kids." Claudio Cammarano of Gruppo Mondadori countered: "But you need to work in a context where maternity leave doesn't affect your career. In an unpleasant way, I mean. And this is still happening."

Happy New Year! 2019 is going to be a super exciting year for us. We have big plans for Quartz this year, and we're so excited you're coming on this journey with us. To start the year on a high note, we have a quick update for you.

Key updates:
-We've made some improvements to profile pages and how you view others' profiles.

-This one is for iPad users: we made picking a story into the app from elsewhere on iPad a better experience.

-Minor bugs and fixes

Community highlights:
-To start the year, Apple shares took a hit after CEO Tim Cook announced that the company would miss revenue targets. Jason Ward, director of marketing strategy and brand management at K-Mart & Sears didn't think it was surprising: "Apple's inability and/or decision to not put a stake in the ground on voice, the tech that they introduced billions of consumers to with Siri, has left them with the iPhone as their only truly disruptive item." James Cakmak, an entrepreneur and tech analyst, took an opposite perspective: "It's easy to jump on the sky is falling bandwagon. But consider: 1) services rev still up 30%, 2) miss limited to China macro, 3) upcoming disclosure of services margin still a catalyst."

-In response to a NYT piece written by Kara Swisher posing the question of whether the age of Apple has ended, Allison Baum, managing partner at Fresco Capital wrote: "It needed to be said...Most of the companies Kara cites - Uber, Spotify, and yes, Tinder - emerged out of some of the pain points created by the GFC in 2008. Out of every great crisis comes opportunity."

-What is the state of tech this year? What will happen to Apple? We want to see your thoughts in the community!

-We've fixed a bug that kept you from enjoying your Profile page to the max. Now, if you only have one Pick, your profile page will work properly and no longer malfunction upon refreshing.
-We've also fixed the like button; when you're scrolling on Editors' Picks, see a really thoughtful comment and like it, that thumbs up now saves properly.
--We've made a small tweak to the Login button on the login page. When you're typing in your account information, the button will change color to indicate you can submit once you've filled out your information.

Community highlights:

-This week, we had some scary news. learned that a Facebook bug gave other people access to more than 6 million users' unposted photos. Blogger Helen Hoefele wrote that the news "only reaffirms my lack of faith in this social media company. By the time I finally pull the plug on my account, there may be nothing left in my account that hasn't already been compromised." Roger McNamee, famously an early Facebook investor and one of its biggest critics, wrote: "These bugs are the product of a design methodology that optimizes the elimination of friction over the needs of users. We will continue to see security compromises and other failures until regulators force radical changes to the business model of FB and Google."

-We also learned that Johnson & Johnson had known for decades its baby powder sometimes tested positive for asbestos. In response, Johnathon Lee, a food and beverage consultant at Noble Fire and Greenport Seafood Co., wrote: "People are allowed to kill their fellow citizens and feel okay about it, under the veil and protection of corporations, governments and the economic 'safety' they provide. Sound familiar? ...Johnson & Johnson is still enjoying their immoral profit parade, stomping on the graves of its victims with lawyer jargon, flat-out lies & the withholding of information."

We've made a couple of little tweaks to the app this week. We're working hard to make this platform the best experience for you, one day at a time, one update at a time!

Key Updates:
-Now when you scroll through someone's Picks on their profile, their name appears in the top bar so you never forget whose Picks you're looking at!

-We've made it clearer that you can edit your Pick - add a comment or edit your comment.

-Minor bug fixes

Community Highlights:
-Quartz Pro and Wharton professor Adam Grant shared his NYT op-ed in the app, sparking a lively discussion around just how important is it for students to aim for straight A's. Adam argued that academic excellence is overrated and not a great indicator of longer-term success.

-Parent and skincare startup 3toZen founder/CEO Sopiea Mitchell wrote: "I am in full agreement with Adam Grant and I have preached like a good preacher the same message to my daughter, but I have been fighting a losing battle...the message is being lost on many of our children, including my own, and their parents."

-Anjil Giri, senior manager at TESARO, Inc., pointed out: "Many schools, including the famed Ivy's, routinely inflate the grades, employers value the GPAs and standardized test scores...It's easy to point out that straight A's aren't necessary - and provide examples of a few people like Jobs, Gates, etc. and say they had 2.7 GPA. How many people with 2.5s have achieved the same name?"

What do you all think? Is the system broken? Join the discussion!

Another week, another set of bugs zapped! We're hard at work to make your experience and the community better.

The key changes:
-We've made it easier to follow all the amazing commenters in any set category when you're creating your personalized My Feed, with a new "Follow all" button for a one-tap experience.
-Now, you'll be able to Pick stories from the New York Times app without any crashes or other problems.
-Thanks to the feedback from you, we've fixed the bug where it was impossible to close the privacy policy (GDPR) popup for some news sites (including Quartz!). Now you can close it and scroll away!
-We fixed a bug on the "Follow all" buttons on the Discover page. Now it accurately reflects whether you're following everyone in the category or not, and you can actually choose to follow them all!
-We also made your Profile page prettier by fixing the color scheme to the gray we know and love.

Highlights from the community:

Quartz featured a thoughtful piece from Melinda Gates on the state of women deciding to pursue technology and computer science as a career (spoiler alert: way more likely in the 1970s than today). Girls Who Code Founder and CEO Reshma Saujani, in response to the piece, wrote: "Girls need to see themselves in computer science, to feel like they belong, to even have the chance to imagine themselves as a computer scientist in the first place. Our work isn't done here." (Hear, hear!)

Quora had a data breach this past week, affecting 100 million users. Spencer Camp, a UX designer, taught the community a bit about data breaches and what organizations should do: "There are four types of data breaches: 1) Publicly available data 2) non-public data 3) personally identifiable data 4) personal security information. We should require stricter security standards (2FA) if data is extremely sensitive and less strict standards if data is not sensitive (PIN)."

We’ve got more improvements for our Quartz community! Here are the key updates in this version:

- We’ve made it a lot easier to follow awesome Pickers who share smart insights on the topics you’re interested in. When you create your own My Feed and select topic categories you’re interested in, we match your interests with Pickers to follow. That way, you’ll get a robust experience right out of the gate! You can unfollow and customize your My Feed further at any time.
- We’ve made a small tweak to the “Read Article” button design in the comment pages. At Quartz, we’re all about experiences pleasing to the eye, so we’re always improving our designs.
- You’ll now get a notice from us when you first download and launch the app to turn on push alerts. We value your time, so we only send you push alerts on stories we find particularly interesting or relevant; it’s a great way to keep up with the best discussions going on in the app.

Highlights from the community:

One of the most Picked and commented on stories from this past week was on Elon Musk’s declaration that people needed to work 80 hours a week to change the world. A number of our community members — from Jake Gunnoe, the director and succcess coach at the Leadership Society of Arizona, to Adam Grant, an author and organizational psychologist who teaches at UPenn Wharton — pointed out that Jeff Bezos, another world-changing force, works fewer than 60 hours a week.

Notable quote: Maryam Banikarim, formerly CMO at Hyatt, on her own piece in the New York Times reflecting on her decision to leave her job and have some downtime: “Leaving the world of work was not easy for me — I’m decidedly Type A. But sometimes you have to prioritize other parts of your life. Sometimes (if you can) you chose a path that others think is “crazy” or “brave” — and that’s okay. In my mind, life is about choices and chapters. In some chapters, you double down on work; in others, you step away. This ends up being something you negotiate with other parts of your life...It’s been a few months now that I’ve been on this journey. And there are some days when it’s easier than others. Deep down I know it will be fine. But I’m fortunate to have a community who reminds me of that when I need.” (We’re with you, Maryam! And with you, our Quartz community!)

Hope those of you who were celebrating had a great Thanksgiving. This year, we’re particularly thankful for you, our community of commenters.

In this version, we changed the minimum number of people you have to follow when setting up My Feed to five, from one—in other words, from awkward banter to thriving dinner party.

Highlights from the community:

— The top three commenters this past week were Quentin Fottrell, the personal finance editor and advice columnist at MarketWatch; Jeanna Liu, an internet M&A banker, investor and startup advisor; and Kent Gustavson, an entrepreneur and award-winning writer.

— Kai-Fu Lee, the Chairman and CEO of Sinovation Ventures and a big AI investor, on the impact of AI on the global economy: “With enormous wealth generated by AI, we shall not underestimate the effect of job displacement due to AI will have on the world economy. As outlined in my new book “AI Superpowers,” 40-50% of our jobs will be technically and economically doable by AI and automation over the next 15 years.” (But never fear, your curated stories on the Quartz app will always be handled by real human beings!)

It was an exciting first week. Lots of great comments and some amazing new Quartz Pros joining the community. Thanks for being a part of it!

Here are the significant changes in this version:

- Picking is fun, but sometimes you want to unpick. Now you can!

- The in-app browser had some issues. We fixed them. Say no more.

Thanks for joining the Quartz community! We're just getting started, so expect a lot of updates based on your feedback and, uhh, things we missed the first time around. Here are the changes of note in this version:

- Previously, you got some really satisfying haptic feedback when you tapped the pick button, but not when you submitted a comment with your pick. Which was...kind of a letdown. So now you get haptic feedback when commenting, too. Game changer.

- The comment bar in our browser was covering up the bottom of webpages. This was particularly maddening for users in Europe, whose experience of the web includes endless privacy banners that they need to dismiss—but couldn't because we were covering up the bottom of the page. While this would make for pretty good dystopian sci-fi, it did not seem ideal for our app, so we fixed it.

- Some copy was updated, views were fixed, and scrolling was made smooooother.

We've got a quick new update for you. We're working hard to quickly improve your experience! [Product Updates] -We've made it easier to scroll through and find more Quartz Membership stories on Editors' Picks. Check out the new "carousels" and let us know what you think! -Minor bugs and fixes, including squashing a bug that was showing wrong Like counts on your My Feed. [Community Highlights] -Workism, the idea that work is essential to one's identity and more work boosts human welfare, was the subject of an Atlantic piece that garnered a great discussion; the article links workism to largely negative emotional impact. Writes Matt Wallaert, Chief Behavioral Officer at Clover Health, in response: "This isn’t actually about work. The search for meaning, and finding it in labor, has occupied people for far longer than the author seems to imagine...Work and leisure aren’t distinctive classes of time with clear boundaries. And when you start trying to treat them that way, much of why drives us as humans is lost. Forget economists; try reading a few psychologists." -Gail Barnes, Partner at Personify LLC, shares this story: "On the 14 December 2014 I got off a plane from SF, and that was the last time I would be able to walk for the next year. As a value system reset it was rather effective. I still work hard, but I now spend an equivalent amount of time on exercise...Money could not restore my mobility. Exercise and the stronger muscles that were the result, did." -We on the community team wish that you enjoy the work you do, but be sure to not over-work and burn out! Love us? Rate us!
