REC - Pro Video Camera 7.1 Update
2024-04-03
There is no worse feeling than wrapping up a perfect interview and realizing that *at some point* recording just... stopped. How can this even happen in 2024? The answer is surprisingly, more ways than we thought. Anything that has the potential to temporarily take the device's focus could interrupt your footage. Causes range from overheating, to getting a phone call, to simply an alert from another app.

So what can we do about it? Unfortunately it's beyond our power to block most of these things. What we can do, however, is give you a giant warning that you can't possibly miss, that something has gone awry. Now when recording is interrupted for ANY reason, REC lets you know in three distinct ways.

1. An alert on the screen. This visual cue should make it very obvious that something has gone wrong. But what if you're not behind the camera, but in front of it?
2. An audio alert. If you're not looking at the screen, this is your first line of defense as an indication of a problem. But there are ways to miss this as well, if the device is silenced or the interruption itself produces audio.
3. Flashing lights. The last line of defense. Even if you're in front of the camera, and the device is silenced, it will be difficult to miss the device's flashlight lighting up several times.

All three of these alerts happen simultaneously, so you're aware the instant that there's a problem. But what can you do to prevent problems in the first place? You can try putting your device in airplane mode, to reduce the risk of incoming calls or messages. Completely closing all apps in the background may help REC retain focus. And denying permission to any non-critical notifications will help reduce the likelihoood of receiving one during a crucial moment. But when all else fails, we will make absolutely sure you know that an interruption has occurred.

Have an idea, question, comment, or problem with REC? Send us a note, we love hearing from you! You can do this via the in-app bug reporter or support@latenitesoft.com. Your feedback means the world to us, and directly helps shape the future of our apps.

7.0 2023-10-25
USB-C external storage for iPhone 15 Pro is here! With REC 7.0, we’re focusing on optimizing your workflow by introducing the best way to record to an external disk via USB-C. While iOS 17 introduced the ability to record to external drives, we’ve taken that idea a step (or two) further.

External Recording Enhancements:

- Format Freedom: Unlike the default camera app, REC allows you to record to an external disk in any format, not just ProRes.
- Seamless Integration: Simply choose to prefer saving to an external disk, when available. REC will manage the recording process automatically.
- Integrated External Disk Speed Test: Normally, recording to an external disk is a bit of a black box. If you have a slower disk frames can be dropped without warning, leading to choppy video files. With REC however, you can easily access a disk speed test from the settings menu to determine which formats will work best for your drive.
- Frame Loss Protection: If for some reason frames are being dropped while recording to an external drive, REC will alert you with a warning, so you can resolve the issue before wasting too much precious light.

Other Benefits of Recording to an External Disk:
- No Regrets: With recording to an external disk, you can now record for extended periods without worrying about running out of internal storage space.
- Optimized Workflow: Forget long transfer times, simply unplug your drive from your iPhone and plug it into your preferred editing computer. That's it!

As always, your feedback is invaluable to us. If you have suggestions, questions, or encounter any issues while using REC, please don't hesitate to reach out to our support team via the in-app bug reporter or support@latenitesoft.com. We're committed to continuously improving your video shooting experience.

For our users with iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, we bring you the ability to record in Apple LOG when using ProRes, unlocking a new level of creative control and flexibility in your video production. We’re thrilled to introduce this exciting enhancement in REC!

LOG recording allows you to capture footage with a flat color profile, preserving more of your original data. This flexibility in post-production enables you to fine-tune colors and achieve the precise visual style you desire. With the combination of ProRes and LOG, you can produce cinematic looking videos that rival the quality of high-end cameras, all from the convenience of your iPhone. Please note that LOG recording with ProRes is exclusive to iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max due to their advanced hardware capabilities.

We’re also excited to announce that we’re actively working on the feature to record directly to an external device on iPhone 15 Pro using USB-C. Stay tuned for our upcoming release, where you’ll be able to take your video production to the next level by seamlessly recording to external storage.

If you have any questions, feedback, or extraordinary videos to share, feel free to reach out to us at support@latenitesoft.com or via the in-app bug reporter.

3.0.4 2021-01-08
In version 3.0.4 we fixed some minor issues. In version 3 we introduced:

Fractional FPS Options
For those of you who shoot simultaneously with other hardware, REC now supports 23.98 and 29.97 FPS. This pairs well with our Tentacle Sync timecode support allowing you to sync footage accurately from even more devices!

Zoom
By far the most requested feature was to add the ability to zoom to REC. Since all of you ended up on our nice list this year, we've added this gift to the app for you. Simply enable zoom in the "More" section of the settings and you'll be ready to focus in on what brings you joy this holiday season!

Grid
In the same settings panel, we've added a small stocking stuffer that overlays a grid on the viewfinder so you can easily frame your shot perfectly.

Photo Library Integration
Our final added option, is the ability to save your videos directly to your Photo Library, bypassing REC's video browser. While you won't be able to take advantage of REC's built in preview system with this option on, your videos will be immediately available to any other app that has permission to use your photos for sharing, editing or anything else you can think of!

2.0 2020-10-28
Welcome to REC 2.0!

We're excited to bring you awesome new features like Timecode support, 10-bit HDR and Stereo recording, read on for the details :)

Timecode is usually considered a "pro" feature reserved for high-end cameras and recording studios. The REC team is really proud to bring it to your iPhone recordings too!

What is Timecode?

Timecode is just a way to annotate the frames in your video with timing information. The trick here is that if you record footage using several devices (your iPhone, a video camera, a DSLR, a microphone), and you use the same reference clock for all your recordings, then it will be dead simple to synchronize everything when you are editing your movie. This is a great way to record multi-angle video, using your phone as another camera!

REC provides two Timecode methods. The first one is "Time of Day", which simply records your device's clock information alongside the video. In order for it to work, just make sure all your devices are using the same time.

For really accurate and extremely simple synchronization, REC also provides Bluetooth sync using Tentacle Sync devices. We have spent the summer playing with them and they are an absolute joy to work with. Set one Tentacle as the master clock, and then configure REC to receive the Timecode information using Bluetooth. If you have other cameras, connect them using the audio output of the your Tentacles. After your shooting session, use the Tentacle Sync Studio app to automatically line up all your clips in the timeline, or have your favorite video editor use the timecode information to synchronize them. You can find more about the Tentacle Sync solution at https://tentaclesync.com

Using Tentacle Timecode, REC is able to synchronize your iPhone footage within an incredible 1-frame resolution window.

10-bit High Dynamic Range With Dolby Vision (iPhone 12 and 12 Pro only)

With your new iPhone 12 you can now capture HDR video, which records more information about a scene, including a wider variety of colors and additional detail in the highlights and shadows. Dolby Vision, the same format films studios use, allows for much more lifelike video and gives more possibilities when grading your footage.

Stereo Sound (iOS 14 only)

REC 2.0 takes full advantage of the recent release of iOS 14, by bringing stereo recording to your iPhone videos. At this time, stereo is only available as an option for internal microphones. In order to use it, you first need to select one of the compatible microphones and then the Stereo polar pattern. If you don't need Stereo, you can also select other polar patterns that are better suited for the kind of work you are producing. For example, you may use the "Front" microphone (which captures sound coming into the screen) and the Cardioid polar pattern if you want to record your voice for a podcast. REC 2.0 shows you exactly what's happening when you select each of the different options, to make it as easy as possible for you to choose the best configuration.

Timecode, 10-bit HDR and Stereo are the three major features we are most excited about, but we have also given some love to the rest of the app. We've improved the video browser with additional options, and fixed all the bugs we've found (so far!). Please, let us know your thoughts about the new version by using the contact option in the menu!
1.1 2020-08-22
Version 1.1 adds the option to record at 25 FPS. It also fixes an issue where focus hunting could occur when recording in 1080p or 720p.
1.0.6 2020-08-05
In version 1.0.6:

* We have added an animation while movie file is being written.
* We have corrected an issue in which the captured video could contain additional extra frames from before the recording button was tapped.
* Performance optimizations.
1.0.5 2020-07-19
Version 1.0.5 fixes several bugs, including:

1. Showing an incorrect value for audio sample rate after video playback. After playback, sample rate in the settings would show 24KHz.
2. The polar pattern for some internal device microphones was always set to omnidirectional, capturing excessive background noise.
3. Crash after leaving and restarting the app using the front camera in some devices.
4. Aspect ratio button could occasionally show the wrong value.
1.0.4 2020-07-17
We fixed a typo on the screenshots, and re-uploaded some of them that were not showing up.
1.0.2 2020-07-17
In version 1.0.2 we have fixed some bugs and made some tweaks to ensure everything runs smoothly.
1.0.1 2020-07-17
In version 1.0.1 we have made some tweaks to ensure everything runs smoothly.
