About GoodMaps Outdoors

GoodMaps Outdoors is a fully accessible turn-by-turn GPS app for iPhone. It has all the outdoor navigation features you expect plus unique offerings you cannot get anywhere else, including extra verbosity for blind users.

Features
• Four main tabs are easy to access at the bottom of the screen: Routes, Location (Default), POIs and Settings.
• A unique GoodMaps Outdoors feature: Record a route using breadcrumbs, called Waypoints. No other accessible app has this. You can add these waypoints with the add button or you can shake the phone to create a Waypoint. It also automatically records a point after you have gone a certain distance. These Waypoint routes can be saved for future use.
• The Lookaround Wand in the top right tells you what is around.
• The More Info button gives the altitude and speed.
• Create your own POIs and share your POIs with others or keep them private with a shortcut on the Location page or from the POIs page.
• POI categories are announced with search results and make finding your destination easier.
• Audio tones and vibrations give feedback throughout the app, letting you know about upcoming turns, critical intersection information, and when search is loading.
• A robust route menu includes multiple methods of choosing a destination, from starting with a POI, an address from your contact list, your route history, and many more!
• Settings include many customization options like: vibrations, vision contrast, color settings, and distance units.
• There are announcement options like right, left, clockface or both.

New and current Seeing Eye GPS XT users, meet GoodMaps Outdoors. Same app, new name, no charge. The version improvements include:
1. Added account creation/login page to securely back up your User POIs, route history and waypoint routes. When you launch the GoodMaps Outdoors app for the first time, it will require you to create an account linked with either your phone number or email.
If using your phone number, select the "Phone number" button, then enter your phone number. Select the Submit button and you will receive a text with your verification code. Enter this code to create your account. If you prefer to login via email then select the "E-mail address" button, then enter your email address. Select the "Send verification link" button and check your email for the verification link. Once you select the link from the same device you will be redirected to the application and account creation will be completed.
The benefit of creating an account is that you will never have to worry about losing your saved information, such as your User POIs, route history, and waypoint routes. These files will be securely stored on the server and linked to your account.

The Seeing Eye GPS XT continues to evolve with new features and improvements thanks to Aira Tech Corp. The improvements in this release are only the beginning of what is yet to come.

Bug fixes and performance improvements:

1. Added a Call Aira Agent button on the location and active route screens. The Aira app can connect you with a trained professional agent to provide instant access to visual information. This can be especially helpful in situations if you have become disoriented while on route or where GPS can't assist, such as locating the front door, the elevator, or products in a store.

2. Added POI category: Aira Access Points. You can search nearby POIs that have Aira's free service Access Points.

3. Aira Access Point automatic detection and notification. Now when you approach one of Aira's free Access Points, you will receive a notification. If you already have the Aira app installed on your phone and activate that notification, it will automatically load so that you can call an Aira agent. If you do not have the Aira app installed, you will be redirected to the App Store to download the Aira app. After creating a guest account, you will enjoy free assistance from the Aira agents at locations with Aira Access Points. If you find that you do not want these notifications, you can turn this off in General Settings under the heading Notifications.

4. Fixed issues with User POI keyboard and headset button controls. The main issue was with the app opening when the play/pause button is pressed on the a Bluetooth headset.

5. Updated Google Maps SDK.

Bug fixes and performance improvements
1. Improved Address and POI searches. Implemented Smart Search fields on the Address and POI search screens to minimize the need for entering information. Now you can enter the entire search in one search field and the app offers suggested matches, so there is no need to type the whole address or POI name.

2. Added automatic announcement for heading changes over 50 degrees. The default is set to announce Under 15 MPH.

3. Beta feature: Added automatic announcement for street changes after you have traveled 50 feet or 15 meters on the new street. Since this is an experimental feature aimed at pedestrian use only, the default is set to OFF. If you choose to enable this feature within Lookaround settings, we ask that you provide feedback to iPh-one@senderogroup.com about your experience.

4. View restaurant menus on Foursquare POIs. If the POI has a menu stored in the database, the app will link to it.

5. Updated indoor navigation SDKs for LoudSteps and Ningo.

Added a new source of POIs, OpenStreetMaps POIs.
Changed the "beacons" button to "indoor" to reflect the variety of indoor wayfinding support available.
Offering Loud Steps and Ningo for indoor wayfinding in buildings where location positioning is available.
Loud Steps is a WiFi based indoor wayfinding system, which allows for turn-by-turn directions. Available building are San Francisco Lighthouse, Envision (Wichita), Chicago Lighthouse, Merchandise Mart and 1871 Chicago in Chicago, National Federation of the Blind (Baltimore), and other international locations. Stay tuned for more buildings as they are added.
Ningo is an open source beacon database consisting of thousands of beacons. When you load Ningo for the first time, you will see a list of all the available beacons in your vicinity. Don't worry if your list is blank for now. We are regularly adding to it and have an online interface to make it easy for anyone to add more beacons. See https://ningo-api.herokuapp.com/ for information on how to become a contributor. The Ningo database includes the OSM indoor beacons. You can create a "getting warmer" route to any of the beacons listed.
Updated Ningo and Loud Steps SDK.

While this release has multiple bug fixes for the LookAround mode, it also brings significant changes to one of the app's POI sources. We have been using the Google Maps and POIs without limitation for over four years now. This has been a great gift from Google, one which we have come to count on. However, Google recently announced a price change effective June 11, that caused us to remove Google POIs from our apps.
Current users of the app, it is imperative that you update to the latest version to make sure the app continues to function properly.

1. Implemented a new code to assist data matching between the server maps and the intersection database. If you experienced inconsistent intersection announcements because of the database inconsistencies, you will find this feature greatly improved.
2. Improved the GPS sensitivity announcements, instead of updating every time you change locations, the app will wait 10 seconds while it has a poor GPS fix before reporting updated on GPS.
3. Upgraded account with Foursquare to increase the Foursquare POI search limitation.
4. Many under the hood improvements to increase app stability.

Jun 14, 2017
1. Added Waypoint Routes, similar to Manual “Breadcrumb” routes that are in our other Sendero GPS products. All you have to do to create a Waypoint route is walk the route and the app will save points along the way. Waypoint routes are helpful when there are no street maps, as in a park or campus.

2. Redesigned the Points of Interest user interface to make searching for POIs more streamlined. You can now use the Nearby POI Shortcut Gesture (double tap, hold and release on the POIs Menu button) or go to the POI Search Screen to search for a specific POI or a POI category. Unless you select a category, the search will be in All categories.

3. If a POI search finds no results, in addition to expanding or cancelling the search, you can now select switch POI source. Your default POI Source will not change if you switch POI Sources for a POI search. You can set your default POI Source in General Settings.

4. Added indoor navigation support, Beacons button on the POI screen, as part of our current federal grant from the National Institute of Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research. Beacon coverage is limited to a few locations in the US, UK, Germany and Turkey. We will be working to expand this coverage over the course of the grant, so stay tuned!

5. Added Uber to Route type options. The app will send your location and destination to Uber so that you can schedule an Uber ride.

6. Added an additional setting for the Shake sensitivity, you can now choose Hard, Medium or Off.

Dec 20, 2016
1. Fixed bugs introduced with iOS 10, including background mode functionality.
2. Ability to receive position from Blindsquare and create a route.
3. Ability to create route to addresses in your Contacts database.
4. Simplified the process of adding a User POI with the following changes:

a) Added a Record User POI gesture, one-finger double tap and hold on the location screen to go directly to the Add User POI screen.
b) Automatically default to the ‘User’ category so that users do not have to do the extra step of selecting a category if they are not going to share user POIs.
c) Create a free-text field for tags so that the user can type their own tags and add further information about the user POI.

5. Added a shortcut gesture, perform a one finger double tap and hold on the POI tab, to go directly to nearest POI screen (only available in VoiceOver is on).
6. Revamp nearest POI search to be more consistent and relative to user’s immediate location.
7. Increased the number of POI's in announced in the LookAround wand.
8. Added a Submenu screen on the location screen to announce less essential information such as altitude, GPS accuracy and speed.
9. Added an accuracy filter for Side of Street indication in routes. Now if the POI has a questionable location, such as in the middle of the street, the app will not announce the side of the street.
10. User Interface improvements include:

a) Streamlined User Interface to reduce duplicate announcements.
b) Fixed the voice over cursor issue.
c) Fixed low vision contrast issues, border color to all buttons.
d) Removed irrelevant POI categories, “points_of_interest” and “street_address.”
