For those of you just tuning in, we released a major update to the TED app last week, but a few pesky bugs came along for the ride. Since then, we’ve been gleefully stomping on them, but if you find more, please help us by emailing us at contact@TED.com. Here’s what’s happened:
・We fixed a problem where videos downloaded prior to the update were lost after the update; previous downloads are back where they belong.
・A problem where Facebook sign-in would crash the app has been resolved.
・We fixed an issue with Chinese translations.
・Missing topics on Search screen have returned.
・We also made several minor improvements and bug fixes.

Now back to last week’s major update. (Did we mention it was pretty major? It was.) Here’s what it included:

・You can now get personalized recommendations from the TED community right on the home screen.
・Speaking of the home screen, it’s getting a major makeover: you’ll find your latest recommendations, newest and trending ideas, and all our curators’ picks in one place.
・Dark mode is here, and it’s on by default. Enjoy all your favorite TED Talks in a cozy cinematic setting. (No fears, though: light mode is still available if you prefer it.)
・We’ve simplified the app navigation.
・The much-requested “Surprise Me” feature is back. Tap it once to find an idea that will probably blow your socks off.
・In addition to duration, downloaded videos now show file size so you can better manage your device storage.
・On top of that, downloads include all available subtitles, so you can switch languages even when you’re offline.
・Search has been revamped to show more and better results.
・Videos now include even more helpful information, including a brief speaker bio, event data, and a personal recommendation from a member of the TED community.
・The app itself takes up much less space on your device; this means faster installs and updates. And, this new update allows us to push minor updates without requiring a complete update every time we improve something.
・All this, in addition to numerous other minor user interface tweaks and improvements.

As always, we hope you enjoy the TED app. If you run into any issues or have general feedback, please email us at contact@ted.com.

One last thing: we don't prompt you for a review in the app because we don't want to distract you from all those wonderful, inspiring TED ideas. However, if you’re enjoying the app, please take a moment to rate and review us here in the App Store. Every vote counts!

Buckle up, because this is a major update! But first, if you read nothing else, please read this:

・Due to a major overhaul of how we handle downloaded videos, this update will cause you to lose all your downloads. Therefore, it’s critical that you save all your downloads to your list so you can download them again after you update the app.

Okay, on to the good stuff. Here’s what’s new:

・Now you can get personalized recommendations from the TED community right on the home screen.

It's summer at TED HQ. The weather is fantastic — unless you are our iOS developer, who hates humidity and prefers it to be consistently 68 degrees. So particular, that one.
Anyway . . .

This release is a mix of improving existing features and preparing for some exciting new things coming later this year.

- We fixed a few issues with downloaded talk videos, so the playback is more reliable.
- Our video and audio player are becoming the best of friends — at least under the hood. They now share a lot of the same internal components. Why does this matter? We asked our frosty iOS developer, and he said, "The code for each player was pretty much the same. The less code for me to manage, the better. And hopefully that leads to fewer bugs as well!"
- There is a new release of iOS coming in the future. We did a bit of cleanup behind the scenes to prepare for that.
- There were a few issues with playlists not displaying properly in the video player. Those should be ironed out now.
- For our most eagle-eyed users: we updated the font style and iconography on the My TED screen.

We hope you enjoy the new release. If you run into any issues or have general feedback on our app, email us at contact@ted.com.

ps. We don't prompt you for a review in the app because we don't want to take away from your time with our speakers. However, if you are enjoying TED for iOS, please take a moment to rate and review us on the App Store. It really helps us out!

Hello from TED HQ! This release brings even more improvements to your video experience in the TED app.

- We made a few improvements to how our video playback controls hide after a period of time. If you tap on a the fast-forward or rewind button, we now reset the hide timer instead of hiding the controls instantly.
- Startup times for a playlist of talks should be a bit faster than before. We're now deferring some work until you start playing a talk.
- If you are streaming to your TV, the double-tap gesture in the video player is now disabled.
- Speaking of streaming, we improved the user interface for streaming. Bugs were fixed. UIs were polished. Many TED talks were watched in the name of debugging.
- If you are as pedantic as your humble release notes narrator, you probably noticed that little stutter that would happen when our video playback controls disappeared. Reader, I bring good news. That stutter is no more!
- Our video player once again adds a poster image to Control Center. We also improved seeking in Control Center.
- For the programmers out there: we fixed a crash that could occur when a CMTime value would return NaN instead of a valid time.
- A few missing VoiceOver labels have been added to the video player.
- There was a potential crash that could occur for our signed in users. There is no longer a potential crash that could occur for our signed in users.

5.7.4 2019-05-02
Hello, release notes readers! This is a small update based on feedback we've received in the last few weeks.

- If you tried to get a list of talks translated into your preferred language, it would sometimes return zero talks errantly. No mas!
- We slowed down our phones to 1998 era speeds and started playing videos. This uncovered a few rough edges that we went ahead and sanded down. We hear you! More to come.
- Our trusty developer is hard at work on some new features and did a bit of tidying around the project. Marie Kondo would be so proud.

5.7.1 2019-04-11
It's almost time for TED 2019! TED HQ is bustling with activity (some may call it 'organized chaos') as we put the finishing touches on what looks to be another stellar conference. To support all the new content we plan to share with you from TED 2019, we've got a great new iOS release.

One of our biggest requests has been improving our download support. We heard you, and this release does just that! We not only made the actual download and playback process more reliable, but we also looked at the download user experience and tried to make it easier to work with. Whether you are watching TED talks on a plane with no WiFi or listening to them on the subway, we hope your _offline_ TED experience is as good as your online one.

Here's the full list of what's improved in this release.

- Downloading your favorite TED talks now goes through our new download and offline playback functionality.
- You can now remove a completed download from the talk or playlist info screens. I can't believe we didn't support that either.
- If a download fails, we now offer you the option to retry it.
- Downloads now include any available audio track, the English subtitles, and your preferred subtitle language.
- You can now cancel an active download. I can't believe we didn't support that either. We do now!
- Audio downloads do a better job of using any partial download data that is available when trying to restart if the app was killed in the background.
- If you decide you want to allow downloads over your cellular connection, we now do a better job of restarting the download so that you can get your content.
- If you have one of those fancy new AirPlay TVs, you're in luck! Downloaded talks are now able to be streamed over AirPlay.
- Our app's new years resolution was to lose a few pounds, so we fixed a few memory leaks here and there.
- If you changed your subtitle language while playing a talk and then tried to restart the talk, we would crash. Not anymore. That's fixed too.

We received a few reports from you about our push notifications not opening to the talk you were expecting, so we wanted to get a fix out for that. Our iOS developer (who is also writing these release notes) is very sorry about that bug.

Here's the full list of what's improved in this release.

* We fixed a few scenarios where tapping the "Open" link at the top of a TED.com talk page on your iOS device wouldn't open to that content in our app.
* We are trying to be smarter about removing push notifications from your lock screen. If you tap on a message, it is removed but any other messages from us should be kept around in case you're using the lock screen as a mini-bookmarking system.
* There was a crash on launch that was affecting some users. We were trying to load the app's interface in the background.
* We fixed a crash that could happen in the video player when trying to update its internal state.

5.6.0 2019-02-03
This release of TED is focused on improving the suggested talks we show under each talk. These suggestions are now curated by our editorial team, so they are more relevant and regularly updated. If you are viewing a list of talks that have been translated, we also now show the related talks in that language when possible.

We've included a few additional smaller changes.

- Have a keyboard connected to your iPad? You can now press the space bar to switch between playing and pausing your current video. The left and right arrow keys will also rewind and fast-forward, respectively.
- If you are using a right-to-left language, our playback controls should be laid out on screen how you'd expect them now.
- The elapsed and total playback time for the content you are watching or listening to is now formatted based on your device's region settings.
- Tapping on "Privacy Policy" in settings wouldn't actually take you to our privacy policy. That wasn't the type of privacy we were going for, so we fixed that.

We hope you have a great holiday and a happy new year. See you in 2019.
5.5 2018-12-09
We are nearing the end of our year here at TED HQ and are putting some work into cleaning up some internals of our app. There's not too many user facing changes in this release. The biggest thing you will notice is that we updated the corners of our poster images to be rounded. Designers everywhere rejoiced! Beyond that, there's a host of small changes internally to improve app stability, performance, and get the TED app ready for an exciting 2019.

We hope you enjoy the new release. If you run into any issues or have general feedback on our app, email us at contact@ted.com.

5.4.3 2018-11-18
This release of the TED app is focused on stability and adding support for the new iPad Pro. Here's the full lowdown:
- We now natively support the new iPad Pro models.
- There were a few rendering issues with our new audio player, so we rendered them obsolete!
- The audio player now properly formats the time remaining and elapsed based on your current location.
- We now do a better job of cleaning up after ourselves when you switch subtitle languages.
- There was a comical amount of spacing between action buttons on the content detail screens. Our designers didn't see the humor though, so we fixed it.
- The list of subtitle languages under Settings is now alphabetized by your current location.
- We fixed a few different crashes you reported on iOS 12. If you're still seeing issues, please contact us!

Fall is in full swing at TED HQ and we've been busy sipping our Pumpkin Spice Lattes and working on improving our in-app audio experience. We introduced a new audio bar last month and are now following that up with a full-screen player!

When you are listening to a talk in the audio player just tap or drag on the audio player to show the full-screen player. The full-screen player includes all the playback controls you've come to expect and also makes it easy to add a talk to your favorites list. We'd love to hear what you think and how we can continue to improve your audio listening experience.

What else made the cut this release?

- We heard your feedback! You can now double-tap the screen while watching video to make the content fill the entire screen.
- When you use our search feature, we now put Topics at the top of the list of results.
- We made a few improvements to our Handoff and Spotlight search integration.
- We fixed a crash on launch that was affecting a few users. If you are still seeing this after updating, please email us!
- We updated to Swift 4.2. The developers were very happy about this.

We hope you enjoy the new release. If you run into any issues or have general feedback on our app, email us at contact@ted.com.

The TED app is ready for iOS 12! We're just as excited the release as you are and have made sure that our app runs at its best on Apple's latest offerings.

In addition to the iOS 12 fixes, we have tried to focus on sanding down some rough edges around the app so that we offer the best TED viewing experience we can.

- We've moved our settings for adjusting your download preferences and subtitle language in-app. You can find it under the My TED tab.
- We added a feedback screen under our new Settings screen as well so its even easier to get in touch with us. You're still welcomed to email us if you prefer, of course!
- When tapping on an action button on our playlist or talk screens we added a highlighted state so it's more intuitive.
- There's now an animation that occurs when adding an item to your watch list or favorites to give a bit more visual context.
- We added a parallax effect to our playlist and talk screens when you are scrolling. Why? It just feels nicer.
- We fixed a few potential crashes that could occur when the app was entering the background.

We hope you enjoy the new release. If you run into any issues or have general feedback on our app, email us at contact@ted.com.

Thank you to everyone that has sent in feedback on our visual refresh over the last few weeks. We've been hard at work since then and are excited to debut another improvement to the TED app: an all new audio experience!

The new TED audio player makes it easy to listen to your favorite talks on the go. We've not only given the player a much needed visual refresh, but also focused our attention on improving playback. Our developers claimed to have listened to Stephen Webb's talk on aliens "dozens of times" during testing to ensure that taking TED with you wherever you go is as seamless as ever.

Beyond audio, we also spent some time capturing a few bugs that escaped our grasp before the last release. Crashes were resolved. Alignments were tweaked. And various rough spots were sanded down.

We are very excited to share the all new TED for iOS! We have spent the last several months refreshing the look and feel of our app to offer you the best TED experience possible. Each screen in the app has been updated to not only be more visually pleasing, but also more readable.
The biggest change you'll notice is our reimagined Discover section that makes it easier to find interesting TED talks and playlists on topics that are of most interest to you. Language learners rejoice! Our new "All Languages" view allows you to see a list of talks subtitled in your language of choice and enables those subtitles by default during playback.

We're hard at work on TED v5, the next major release of our iOS app. We're not quite ready to share what's coming in this new release, but we have a few tweaks and adjustments we want to make to your existing app to get ready for the big update.
We also took some time to fix a few different issues with account sync that could cause it to fail under certain conditions. If you have both an iPhone and an iPad, signing with your TED.com account is a great way to see your watch list, favorites, and watch history on both devices. Give it a shot!
