About The Photographer's Ephemeris

"Head and shoulders above the crowd is The Photographer’s Ephemeris. Odd name, great app." - National Geographic

"One of the most useful apps for any nature photographer" - Outdoor Photographer Magazine

"It worked perfectly. The program was dead on…" - National Geographic

"One of the most powerful photography applications that I've seen, one that you'll be using for years and years." - AdoramaTV

The Photographer's Ephemeris (TPE) helps plan outdoor photography shoots in natural light, particularly landscape and urban scenes. It's a map-centric Sun, Moon and Milky Way calculator: see how the light will fall on the land, day or night, for any location on earth.

Whether you need at-a-glance information on today's sun, moon and Milky Way data for your current location, or need to plan a precise alignment of the full moon for a future shoot, TPE has the tools you need. The combination of augmented reality, line-of-sight analysis and visual search supports the most sophisticated photo planning needs.

Night mode features a 3D representation of the Milky Way, pole stars and major constellations directly over the map, so you can easily visualize exactly how to align your shot.

Research and save your own list of favorite photographic locations, using 7 different map types (including 2 offline maps) and save them in your locations list. Favorite locations are always displayed right on the map.

Advanced features including visual sun and moon search, automatic time zone and elevation detection, correction for atmospheric refraction and height above the horizon, ensuring that you have the best possible information for planning your shoot.

You can even determine when the sun or moon will rise from behind nearby hills and mountains.

Key features:

- Time/direction of sun, moon, and galactic center rise/set
- View azimuth and altitude of sun/moon and the galactic center for any time of day/night
- Milky Way, stars and asterisms visualization via 3D map overlay
- Moon phase and % illumination
- Civil, nautical and astronomical twilight
- 2 topographic maps
- 2 offline map types
- Movable map pins: drag and drop the pin exactly where you need it
- Map autorotation using the compass (on compatible devices)

- Save any location you want: no fixed lists
- Celestial events including moon phases, apogee, perigee, solstice, equinox
- Solar eclipse details for 2024: maps, simulator, times

- Updates for iOS 15
- Uses the new Skyfire v3 Platform for North America forecasts (details below)
- Changed the default style of offline topographic map from OpenCycleMap to Thunderforest Outdoors (better peak name display)
- Link to new service status page in Help
- UI fixes and refinements
- Updated SDKs and libraries

This version uses Skyfire v3 for North America forecasts. The v3 platform has been built from the ground up to run on a new cloud architecture. One of the primary benefits of the new platform is that multiple forecasts can be generated in parallel. This has allowed us to increase the update frequency significantly. The current schedule for North America forecast updates on the new platform is:

Today: hourly refresh
Today +1: sunrise - hourly, sunset - every 2 hours
Today +2: sunrise - every 2 hours, sunset - every 4 hours
Today +3: every 6 hours
Today +4: every 8 hours

Generally, you will see the updated forecast become available at twenty past the hour. Schedules start from midnight UTC, hence, so, for example, 4-hourly updates will be available at 00:20, 04:20, 08:20 etc. We expect to move EU forecasts to the v3 platform also in the coming weeks.

- New: support for what3words
- New: updated Locations page
- Updated: the World Magnetic Model has been updated to 2020-2025
- Improved: even better coordinate parsing - TPE supports a wide variety of formats conveniently in a single field
- Bug fixes and stability improvements

What3words: we're delighted to add support for what3words. what3words provides a unique three word address for any location on earth. Find out more at what3words.com.

We've refreshed the Locations page to make it simpler to navigate. Saved locations now have their own dedicated page - you can filter your locations by name and favorites, as before.

Search is broken out into two new screens. Type address or place name into the Address/Place search field and TPE will suggest matches as you type. You can enter a three word address too!

When you open the Coordinates Search page, TPE automatically shows the red map pin position (or grey if geodetics is enabled). You can type or paste in any latitude/longitude coordinate into the field and we'll convert it to a usable location you can save. We automatically display nearby places and the corresponding three word address. You can add these directly to your saved locations list, or use them to set the map pins.

Please send your feedback and suggestions to support@photoephemeris.com - we'd love to hear from you.

If you're enjoying TPE, a review on the App Store is really helpful and lets us keep improving the app.

- Improved: paste latitude/longitude coordinates directly into the search field
- Improved: new browser page for User Guide and Help Center content (print directly from the page, or export a PDF)
- Improved: user guide and about pages load faster
- Improved: video tutorial landing page
- Fixed: stored map tiles occasionally unavailable for some users when offline
- Fixed: occasional crash at start up

Instead of adding a location and then manually editing the coordinates, you can now paste a lat/lon directly into the search field on the locations page. Multiple formats are supported including decimal degrees (e.g. 46.2234, 6.1467), degrees/minutes/seconds (e.g. 46° 13' 24.24", 6° 8' 48.12"), and degrees plus decimal minutes (e.g. N46° 13.404', E6° 8.802').

- New: updated for iOS 13 and Dark Mode
- New: Skyfire map tiles are now served via a CDN for faster loading
- New: offline time zone detection
- New: app prompts at startup to reset date to today, if necessary (controllable in settings)
- Improved: better performance in AR 3D rendering
- Improved: Skyfire now displays at higher zoom levels when using Apple Maps
- Fix: real-time tracking was not cancelled on selecting an event or changing date on iPad
- Fix: rare crash while using Visual Search
- Updated SDKs

Dark mode: dark map styles are displayed for both Apple and Google maps when the "normal" default map type is selected (other maps types do not change appearance). Other UI elements and screens are altered for Dark Mode when it is selected. Remember, TPE's Night Mode is not the same thing as iOS 13's Dark Mode. Night Mode displays information relevant to night photography. Dark Mode alters the user interface to display with dark styling.

- New: azimuth/altitude gauges and numerical readout added to the AR view (useful for sighting the altitude to a landmark or ridge etc.)
- New: in AR view, stars can now be tapped to display name and Beyer designation
- New: last selected date/time is restored on restarting the app
- New: any manually selected override time zone is restored on restarting the app
- New: if an override time zone is specified, the time zone is displayed in bold at the top of the map
- Improved: formatting of displayed time zones has been improved. Previously historically "odd" time zones, e.g. Italy pre-1893, would display a cryptic series of digits
- Improved: override time zones can now be freely defined. They are no longer limited to present day time zone offsets; an arbitrary number of minutes offset can be specified, making it easier to manage historical "pre-time zone" offsets from GMT, when using TPE for historical research purposes
- Improved: larger font size for time, time zone, elevation, and coordinates at the top of the map
- Changed: the tap-to-toggle-map-to-full-screen feature has been removed; it was too easy to activate accidentally
- Fix: control tray height is fixed on iPhone Xs Max (was too short)
- Updated SDKs and libraries
