TrackGuide Description
Management summary :
Navigate GPS Tracks using your Apple Watch (or your Phone if you wish).
Details :
You found a nice track on the internet : a walk through Rome, or an adventurous hike in a national park. You downloaded the track on your phone and started walking but... .
You already carry an icecream and a digital camera in your hands, or Nordic Walking sticks, or you need your hands to climb some rocky paths. No way you can hold that iPhone all the time.
At least, for us, holding our phones while citytripping became a nuisance. And when the Apple watch came out, we wanted to use the watch to guide us on our tracks. So we created TrackGuide.
How does it work?
1 :
Import GPX or TCX files on your phone to build a library of walks. Or just tap a breadcrumb on your phone to create one.
2
These walks are automatically synchronized with your Apple watch.
3
Select and start a walk on your watch.
4
Whenever you need directions, glance at your watch to see where you are, where you are heading to and where you sould go to.
5
Some doubts? The iPhone app can always give you more details.

The app is free to use as long as you do not have to send more than 25 trackpoints to your watch. 25 points should be enough to check the watch app out. The iPhone app does not have any such limits, but you need to register if you want to create or modify walks yourself.
If you like the app, you can buy the unlimited version as in in app purchase. (which is valid for future extensions to the iPhone app as wel).
TrackGuide 10.0.0 Update
2023-11-09
This version of TrackGuide is all about watchOS - your watch as your guide. The only thing that changes on iOS is that we now - just weeks after its release - require iOS 17 or higher. Sorry for that.

But watchOS 10 no longer includes just a limited version of Apple maps. It contains a full singing and dancing Apple maps now. Which is why TrackGuide 10.0 needs watchOS 10 (and iOS 17) as a minimum (and that is why we could not wait to adapt). All changes revolve around new screens to guide you on your walk :
- Unlike the previous walk screen - north up - the new walk screen rotates with your orientation so map stays aligned with the real world
- The track to follow now shows as a line on the map.
- The walk screen no longer shows just the previous point, the next point and 2 points thereafter, but the previous point, the next point and all points thereafter for the next 100 meters. (this might be more or less than 2 points).
- Swipe to toggle between the standard zoomed map, an elevation chart or an overview map.
- The elevation and overview screen both show your current postion on the walk
- The elevation map shows the current grade (if elevation data is available in the GPX you imported) and elevation
- The overview map shows the total distance left.
- The 'next turn' arrow shows the incoming angle to the next point. (hard to explain, but lets give it a try : ) Every arrow in TrackGuide is made up of two part connected with a hinge in the center. Before, the lower part of the 'next turn' arrow always started straight up. The upper part pointed at the direction to take at the next point. This still is the case if you are 100% on track, but if you are off track, the first part of the arrow will indicate the direction to go in order to rejoin the track.
- Guidance was rewritten from scratch : all code to allow TrackGuide to run on watches without compass or GPS was removed. (those watches do not run watchOS10 anyway)
- Might the new walk manager fail - it lacks the 1000s of test kilometers the old one has racked up over the years - the old manager is still available behind an button labelled 'old' as a backup to get you out of the wilderness.

Further enhancements to the walk edit window :

- Long or force-touching a photo in the pointtable opens the POI screen as it looks while walking in stead of the edit window.
- Search behaves different when your walk contains 0, 1, or more points :
0 points : centers the map on the found placemark. The search field is initialized with the first word of the name of the walk
1 point : given the start point, lists points of intrest in the neighbourhood of the start. Select the points you want to visit to generate a walk proposal
more than 1 : The found placemark is appended to the walk.
6.2.0 2019-05-17
Fixes a problem where the direction arrow was soetimes pointing in the wrong direction when being off track.

Changes to the walk creator window
==========================
You no longer have to tap every single trackpoint. Just tap the ones you really want to pass and let TrackGuide generate the intermediate points. New is :
1: Generate routing instructions segment by segment
Select a point on the map. Tap the 'autocomplete' button and tadaaaaaa... routing beteen the previous point and the selected point is genereted.
2: Generate routing instructions for a walk
(only available for walks having less than 50 points) just select it from the edit menu and routing between all the points is added.
3 : Generate (almost automatically) a walk between landmarks in your neighbourhood.
The search button in the edit window now works differently if autocomplete (magic wand button) is on : it will show a list of landmarks in the neighbourhood of your walk. Select the ones you want to visit and you have a skeletton for a new walk. You can then rearrange the points if needed and - pont by point or all at once - generate routing instructions between these points.

Some visual changes.
6.1.0 2019-04-30

- Blue arrow : your heading on the map.
2 :
Arrow representing what to do on the next turn added to the upper right corner of the walk screen (as on the watch)
3 :
- You can set a start location when importing from iCloud. Walks close to that location will appear on top of the list.

- Pictures no longer resized to 200 pixels when changing the coordinates of a POI.
- Enhanced POI encountered now active.

watchOS
======
Theoretical position (glued to the track) now shown on the map (green dot)
Dirction to go (the green arrow) now calcuated from that theoretical position
5.9.5 2019-03-27
Fixes some visual glitches on the main iPad screen - specially when you open the application in landscape..
The iPhone now shows the same symbol (blue dot with blue arrow for your heading and green arrow for the direction to take) for your current location as the watch version does while walking. Unlike the watch version, the phone does not draw this symbol on your GPS location, but on your presumed location (where TrackGuide thinks you really are). The raw GPS location is also shown. (In an ideal world, GPS and presumed location are the same. But in between tall buildings, GPS is often a few decameters off)
Editor for multilingual texts now offers previously used languages as default values.
5.9.0 2019-03-10
Watch :
Dynamic arrow representing the next turn is permanently displayed on the map screen.
Distance to the next point is now permanently displayed on the map screen.

Photos taken within the app are now saved in a higher resolution.

4.7.1 2018-09-30
Fixes a crash when drag-dropping trackpoints in iOS12.
4.7.0 2018-09-27
Privacy policy can be viewed inside the app.

We added the possibility to export extended GPX (it is a setting in the preference window). Extended GPX contains image data plus multi-lingual names/descriptions. Extended GPX is compatible with GPX, but names and comments will not display as intended on software other than TrackGuide. So it should only be used to exchange walks between TrackGuide instances. Standard GPX should be used for sharing walks with other apps or GPX-compatible devices.

After a walk is modified in TrackGuide, the updated points will only be synchronised with your Watch if the Watch already had the old set of trackpoints for that walk.

Fixes a possible crash on the newest Apple Watches

And we updated to the latest XCode.
4.6.0 2018-09-13
The editor for multilingual texts has been enhanced.
4.5.0 2018-08-31
You can now record your walk. Take pictures to add intresting points to your walk while recording.

We made some changes on the edit process :
- You can add POI's in 'Edit Mode' : just force tap (or long tap on older devices/iPads) the point. Before, you had to switch to 'POI Mode'.
- Selecting a point in POI mode no longer takes you to the POI window. You need to force or long tap, or slide the edit option into view, to do so.
- In Edit mode, we do no longer display thumbnails of POI-Pictures on the map : these pictures obscured the view while drag-dropping a point to its correct location.

The point table now shows picture thumbnails whenever available.
4.2.0 2018-08-14
- No longer crashes when you want to access the Photo library on an iPad
- On iPad : POI and POI extras (geographical coordinates and picture) are combined on one screen.
- Distance left to next point shown on the watch. When close to a point, the distance left to the end of the walk is shown
4.1.0 2018-07-29
This release is about correcting/completing walks when you are test-walking them. All modifications are on walk-guidance screen of the iPhone app
- Take pictures to add POI's. You can name the POI and change to location of the POI to reflect its real location in stead of the location where the photo was taken
- Drag individual points to where they should be
- When a photo is attached to a POI, the walk screen will show a thumbnail in stead of the green marker when you approach the point.
Plus the usual tuning.
4.0.0 2018-07-10
Works on iPad. Walks can be created on the iPad and then be send to one or more iOS devices. The iPad can be used to guide you on your walks as well. You'll still need an iPhone to sync your watch though.

uTurns are now marked with a distinct icon so you know it is an u turn an not some unexpected end of the journey.

The app no longer needs to be started on the phone in order to pull points to the watch.

Transfer of photos to the watch now supported for walks containing more than 2 photos.

The usual finishing touches.
3.9.0 2018-06-22
- Added feeback during long peer-to-peer data transfers (walks with a lot of puctures)
- Trackpoints with attached interesting points are now more recognizable when editing walks (little flag added)

Some fixes on the iOS app :
- You no longer loose edits when switching from map to satellite view in the walk editor (sorry)
- Tapping the mapscreen in POI modus no longer adds new points - only in edit mode it will.
For the WatchOS app :
- When you refresh the point of a generated walk (a walk that guides you to a point), you will receive a walk from your current location and not from the location you were when you created or refreshed that walk on your phone.
3.8 2018-05-24
- Possibility to show distances in yards/miles
- One can now change the 3 basic parameters to determine if we have reached a point (distance (1) + fraction of GPS accuracy (2) but not more than (3))
- Possibility of exchanging walks between devices
- The usual tweaking and fixing
3.7 2018-05-09
