About Umbertide - Umbria Museums

With every step you discover centuries of history
and wonders of art, jewels of the Upper Tiber
in a dimension of attractive simplicity.
Just look around.

Umbertide, the old Fratta
Located in the Upper Tiber Valley, Umbertide stands at the confluence of the Reggia stream and the Tiber River. Although there is mention of an ancient Roman Pitulum, its origins remain uncertain. In the 12th century it was known by the name of Fratta filiorum Uberti, as it was a feud of the descendants of Umberto, marquis of Tuscany. In 1189 one of these, Ugolino di Uguccione, subjected his lands to the authority of Perugia, including among them the castle of Fratta.

The Santa Croce Museum: a treasure trove of the art of Signorelli
The town museum is in the 14th-century Church of Santa Croce.
The altarpiece of the Deposition on the high altar, painted by Luca Signorelli in 1516, is the only one of the many works on panel by the master from Cortona that has remained at its original site. The same is true, quite unusual for a museum, of the paintings over the side altars.
