“On the iPhone I use an app called Unread. … If you ever use the Clear app for your to-dos or shopping lists where it’s very opinionated, very limited, and very gesture-based, it’s kind of like that for RSS readers. And I like that a lot on the phone. I have a lot of muscle memory there, and I enjoy the design of it quite a bit.”
— Marco Arment, Accidental Tech Podcast

“Unread carries a strong history as one of the top RSS clients on iOS, and version 2 ensures that will remain true for a long while yet.”
– Ryan Christoffel, MacStories

“Unread is focused on eliminating chrome — it is a pure reading app. It’s like reader mode all the time, and the assortment of color themes is nicely curated.”
– John Gruber, Daring Fireball

---

Unread has full VoiceOver coverage. Every screen and every feature is available to users with vision impairments:

• From any screen you can perform a magic tap, a two-finger double tap, to open a menu of options available for that screen.
• When on an article list, there are actions available for each article in the list. After selecting an article, invoke the accessibility rotor and then select “Actions”. There is an action to mark the article read or unread, an action to share the article, and many others.
• Use the VoiceOver escape gesture, a two-finger “Z”, to back out of the current screen.

3.3.1 2023-01-31
I recently released Unread 3.3 with the ability to create an article from a webpage via a “Save to Unread” share sheet extension.

This update contains these bug fixes:

• This update fixes a bug that would cause syncing with a NewsBlur account to miss articles under some circumstances.
• This update fixes a bug that would cause the Readwise article action to disable itself under some circumstances.

If you enjoy using Unread, please consider purchasing a subscription. A subscription adds the new “Save to Unread” share sheet extension, article actions, caching of webpage text and images, custom app icons, and more.
3.1.2 2022-10-23
Recent improvements include:

• Unread Cloud: a new syncing and article retrieval system for Unread.
• Subscribe in Unread: a share sheet extension letting you easily subscribe to feeds offered by the website you are visiting.

This update adds hardware compatibility improvements.
3.1.1 2022-09-14
This update incorporates these improvements:

• This update adds hardware compatibility improvements.
• This update improves formatting of Substack articles. These improvements will apply to articles downloaded after installing the update.
• This update fixes a bug that prevented the share sheet from becoming the focused view when activated via VoiceOver.
3.0.2 2022-07-22
Keyboard Shortcut Changes:

• This update _removes_ `command-w` as a keyboard shortcut for backing out of the current screen. This is an important forward-looking compatibility change. Instead, use left arrow, command-period, or escape to back out of the current screen or to dismiss the swipe left menu.
• The primary keyboard shortcut for marking an article read or unread is now `m` (with no modifiers). The keyboard shortcuts `u`, `r`, and `command-shift-u` now also mark the article read or unread. The previous keyboard shortcut for marking an article read or unread will also work when possible.
• The primary keyboard shortcut for saving/starring or unsaving/unstarring an article is now `s` (with no modifiers). The previous keyboard shortcut, `command-s`, still works as well. This update also adds `l` and `command-shift-l` as alternative keyboard shortcuts for saving/starring or unsaving/unstarring an article.

Other Improvements

• This update fixes bugs around showing the search field via keyboard shortcut.
• This update adds improvements to the heuristics used to determine whether an article is a linked list article.
3.0 2022-06-27
Unread 3 adds Unread Cloud, a new feed retrieval and syncing system for Unread.

Create or log in to an Unread Cloud account on all your devices via Sign in with Apple. With an Unread Cloud account, our servers retrieve articles from feeds, and your device retrieves those articles from our servers. This makes refreshing your account fast, reduces the battery power and bandwidth required by your device, and ensures that you do not miss articles when your device is offline.

Unread 3 also adds Local accounts. Local accounts use the Unread Cloud infrastructure to efficiently retrieve articles, but do not keep multiple devices in sync.

Support for external feed services such as Feedbin and Feedly remains important for Unread. If you are happy using an external feed service, you can continue doing so. You do not need to change anything. You will want to continue using your external feed service if you use it to keep Unread in sync with other RSS readers or if you use the website that your feed service provides. Unread Cloud is focused on article retrieval and syncing for Unread.

Other Improvements:

• The default icon for Unread is now its Day theme icon.
• The launch screen is now more subtle, and uses either a white or black background depending on whether the device is in light mode or dark mode.
• Share sheet interaction has been modernized.
• The Settings screen has been completely revamped, and is now available from the swipe left menu of the home screen, subscription list, and article list. It now includes release notes and information that had been on the About screen. The Release Notes and More sections have been removed from the home screen. The ability to change the current theme is no longer available from the swipe left menu of most screens.
• The General font size setting has been removed, since iOS and iPadOS now let you set app-specific font sizes. The article list and article view font size settings are still available.
• The iOS 13-style preview functionality and Drag and Drop functionality has been removed in favor of Unread’s custom context menus.
• The bottom of the screen no longer displays status text indicating when it is indexing articles.

Unread 3 requires iOS/iPadOS 15.5 or later.
2.8.6 2022-03-01
This update incorporates these improvements:

• Feedly recently started referring to feed groupings as folders. Previously Feedly referred to them as categories. With this update, Unread now refers to feed groupings in Feedly accounts as folders in order to be consistent with Feedly’s nomenclature.
• This update adds modest improvements to article list thumbnail selection for articles with embedded YouTube videos.
• This update fixes a crash.
2.8.3 2021-10-27
This update incorporates these improvements:

• When sharing an article to Discord via the share sheet, Unread will now send only a link to the article. Unread will let Discord generate its own link preview.
• This update fixes a bug that could cause a crash under some circumstances.
• Unread no longer uses a third-party crash reporting service. The privacy policy has been updated accordingly.

• This update fixes a bug that could cause read articles to become marked unread again after syncing with NewsBlur under some circumstances.
2.4 2020-12-01
This update adds a variety improvements, including:

• Widget improvements
• An option to use the Unread 1.x context menu
• Layout adjustments
• Messages Article Action

Widget Improvements

The Recent Articles widgets now allow you to limit articles to those from a specific subscription or folder. There is now a header at the top of the medium and large widget that describes the source: the name of the subscription or folder, a label for the account if you have multiple accounts, or just “Recent Articles”. The unread count is also now part of the header.

The medium and large Unread Counts widget now allows you to show unread counts by subscription in a specific folder. The total unread count is now included in the header. Tapping the header brings you to either the account screen or to the count of unread articles by subscription for the configured folder.

New Context Menu Option

This update adds a new setting to use Unread’s custom menus — like the menu that appears when you swipe the screen to the left — as context menus that appear when you long press an item. In Unread 2.0 I adopted system context menus that were introduced in iOS 13. When you long press an item, you typically get a system context menu and a preview window.

I still believe it is important to offer the system context menus along with previews of items such as links in an article or articles in an article list. But since releasing Unread 2.0 I have come to the conclusion that for many customers the system context menus are a step back from Unread’s custom menus. They more often require scrolling. Their menu items have much smaller tap targets. They are slower to appear on the screen.

If you wish to use Unread’s menus for long press actions, you can do so with this update. Just open Settings, scroll down to Interface, select Context Menus, and then select Unread. The Unread setting will be the default for new installations. For existing installations updating to this version, the default will be System.

Please be aware that previewing links and drag and drop actions are only available with System context menus.

Layout Adjustments

Unread now uses much narrower margins on the iPhone. On the iPad, its margins are generally narrower but they adjust based on the font size. Customers on iPads with larger font size settings will see narrower margins.

Messages Article Action

This update adds a Messages article action. After enabling it under Settings → Article Actions, you can quickly send an article via Messages from the swipe left menu of an article. You can also use the control-i keyboard shortcut.

Additional details about this update are available on the Golden Hill Software blog. If you are happy about this update, please consider leaving a review, writing about it on your blog, or posting about it to social media.
2.3.1 2020-10-17
• This update adds forward-looking hardware compatibility improvements.
• If you have at least one account setup, you can now subscribe to our website’s RSS feed directly from the About screen. Similarly you can now open @unread_app on Twitter via Tweetbot, the Twitter app, or Twitterrific directly from the About screen. Please consider subscribing to our RSS feed or following @unread_app on Twitter to keep up with our latest news.
• Videos now play full-screen on iPad.
• The name of the Group by setting of the Unread Counts widget is now Report by.
• The screen title and activity text no longer appear at the bottom of an Unread window on an iPad when in slide over.
• After tapping on what looks like an image-based button that links to a podcast, Unread will now open the link instead of zooming into the image.
• This update improves formatting of some articles that include tables.
• This update fixes a bug that caused links to code snippets to be removed from sourcediving.com articles.
• This update fixes a bug that allowed horizontal scrolling on some articles.
• This update fixes a bug that prevented two-finger scrolling on a trackpad to scroll across a large zoomed image.
• This update fixes a bug that caused HTML tags to appear in the feed text and summaries of articles from The Independent. This fix will not apply to articles downloaded to the device before installing this update.
• After entering a webpage URL to look for feeds and then tapping a feed to which you are already subscribed, you will now be prompted to edit your subscription, unsubscribe from the feed, or copy the feed link.
• The Cancel and Done buttons have been removed from the bottom of the Add Subscription screen. You can still leave that screen by swiping the screen to the right.
• When VoiceOver is enabled, Unread will no longer add whitespace between areas of the magic tap menu. This should make it easier to locate and tap items on the screen when unable to clearly see them.
• When sharing an article to HEY via the share sheet, the resulting email message will contain only the title and a link to the article.
• This update adds bug fixes and performance improvements around keyboard navigation, drag and drop on iPad, context menu generation, and general navigation.
• This update adds minor bug fixes around split view and slide over on iPad.
2.3 2020-09-16
Unread 2.3 adds these home screen widgets on iOS 14:

• Recent Articles
• Single Unread Count
• Unread Counts

---

Recent Articles Widget

The Recent Articles widget shows recent articles at a glance. Tap on an article to open it in Unread. This widget is available in all three widget sizes: small, medium, and large. The small variant will show a single article. The medium variant will show one or two articles. The large variant will show a list of articles.

Single Unread Count Widget

The Single Unread Count widget is a small widget that shows the number of unread articles. By default it shows the number of unread articles in your account. You can customize this to show the number of unread articles for a subscription or for a folder.

Unread Counts Widget

The Unread Counts widget has medium and large variants that show the number of unread articles either by subscription or by folder. Since the full list of subscriptions or folders with unread articles will not always fit inside a widget, a Priority Sources setting lets you specify which subscriptions or folders you most want to see in the widget if they have unread articles.

---

Opening Links and Articles in Web Browsers

iOS 14 lets you have a default web browser other than Safari. On devices running iOS 14, the Safari option of the Open Links In setting has been renamed to Web Browser. The Open in Safari share sheet action has been renamed to Open in Web Browser.

I intend to remove the Chrome and Firefox options of the Open Links In setting when I can reasonably require iOS 14. I also intend to remove the Open in Chrome and Open in Safari share sheet actions at that time. Please let me know if my doing so would interfere with your workflow.

---

Other Improvements

• Show Read Items or Hide Read Items is now available in the swipe left menu of article lists for subscriptions and folders.
• Articles with iframe content such as YouTube videos now loads more smoothly.
• This update reduces vertical spacing around some images.
• This update fixes a bug that could cause tapping an image to either do nothing or to open an underlying link rather than showing the image full screen under some circumstances.
• This update fixes a bug for Feedly customers where, under some circumstances, marking a large number of articles read and then refreshing the account would cause a subset of those articles to appear unread again.
• Unread will now mark an article read in your feed service account when leaving the app if that article is open.
• When the Black theme is active, there are now very light separators delimiting the top and bottom bars of the screen.
• When emailing an article via the Mail Article action, the initial message now includes a blank line at the top. This makes it easier to insert comments with a regular (non-header) text size before sending.
• This update fixes a bug that caused duplicate images in some xkcd articles.
• This update adds formatting improvements for macrumors.com articles with videos.
• This update fixes a bug that prevented Unread from discovering feeds for homekitauthority.com.
• This update fixes a bug that caused images from some postsecret.com articles to be cut off.
• This update fixes a bug that caused previewing a link in an article and then tapping through to in-app Safari to fail under some circumstances.
• This update fixes a bug that could cause particularly long presses on folder rows that result in opening subscription lists to also open article lists (or vice-versa) under some circumstances.
2.2 2020-07-16
New Article Actions:

• Mail Article mails the content of the article.
• Mail Article Link mails a link to the article.
• Pinboard saves a bookmark to an article in your Pinboard account.
• Raindrop.io saves a bookmark to an article in your Raindrop.io account.

Each article action can be invoked by keyboard shortcut: option-i for Mail Article, command-i for Mail Article Link, command-shift-b for Pinboard, and command-shift-r for Raindrop.io.

Keyboard Navigation Improvements:

When navigating up and down an article list via hardware keyboard with space or shift-space, Unread now stops at breaks between articles when possible rather than scrolling a fixed number of points up and down the screen. This change also applies to other screens with lists of items.

Important Note:

For Feedly customers, the list of Saved Articles is now called “Read Later”. The wording around adding and removing articles to this list has also been updated. The underlying functionality is unchanged, but I updated the wording to reflect a change in Feedly’s nomenclature.

Minor Improvements:

• Most animations now happen about 30% faster.
• This update adds improved formatting of aside elements.
• Overscrolling in order to scroll to the next article, scroll to the previous article, mark all read, or pull to refresh is now easier with a trackpad or mouse.
• Unread now plays video in embedded iframes from player.twitch.tv.
• Unread now uses a Content Security Policy as an additional mechanism to ensure that articles cannot execute arbitrary scripts.
• Unread will now consider a feed private if its URL path contains the string “/private/” or the string “/pri/”, or if its URL contains the query parameter “unread_private=true”. Private feeds have webpage text turned off by default. URLs of private feeds are never sent to the Unread Web Service.
• The context menu for a subscription row now includes a Copy Feed Link menu item.
• Report Webpage Text Issue in the share sheet has been replaced with Report Article Issue. That option is available regardless of whether you are viewing feed text or webpage text. Instead of sending a request to the Unread Web Service, it creates an email that you can send to the customer support address. The privacy policy has been updated to reflect that the Unread Web Service is no longer involved in reporting these issues.
• Retrieving articles is now significantly faster.
• Unread now uses better article list images for articles from underconsideration.com under some circumstances.

Bug Fixes

• Performing actions from context menus is now smoother.
• Article previews now display more smoothly.
• This update fixes bugs around and improves the performance of loading subsequent pages of articles after scrolling to the end of an article list.
• This update fixes some article list and article display glitches.
• This update fixes a bug that caused the scroll position on an article to change under some circumstances after closing and reopening Unread.
• This update fixes some bugs around syncing article status.
• This update fixes a bug that caused the left arrow key on a hardware keyboard to behave in unexpected ways when the focus is on a text field.
• This update fixes a crash that could occur under some circumstances when searching for a feed by URL.
• This update fixes a bug where, under some circumstances, tapping a link to a website could bring the user to the website’s feed instead of the website’s home page.
• This update fixes a bug where, under some circumstances, swiping back did not work while refreshing an account.
• This update fixes a bug that would prevent a videos from having a play control under some circumstances.
• This update fixes a bug that would cause article lists for NewsBlur folders to exclude articles that exist in subfolders.
• Unread now better handles articles that do not have webpage URLs.

This update requires version 13.5 or later of iOS or iPadOS.
2.1.3 2020-06-24
This update adds forward-looking compatibility improvements.
2.1.2 2020-05-21
I recently released an update with trackpad and mouse support for iPad. There are bigger improvements in the works. In the meantime, this is a minor update with these improvements:

• Unread now incorporates iframe-embedded video from Gfycat.
• Pressing escape, command-period, or command-w on a hardware keyboard when an image is shown full-screen now dismisses that full-screen image view.
• This update fixes a crasher.
• When saving an image to your photo library, Unread now asks for access only to add photos instead of full access to your photo library.
• This update fixes an animation bug around long pressing an article in an article list to preview it.
• This update fixes a bug that prevented Unread from using the right fonts when showing articles under some circumstances.
• This update fixes a bug that could cause blank article screens under some circumstances.

• When switching between feed text and webpage text for an article, Unread will now offer to make feed text or webpage text the default for articles from that feed even if it had asked before and you had previously declined.
2.1.1 2020-05-04
We recently added trackpad and mouse support.

This update addresses these issues:

• Swiping to the right on a trackpad or mouse while the tug left menu is visible now dismisses that menu.
• Unread no longer includes a thumbnail image when sending an article to Todoist via the share sheet. This makes it possible to send articles that have thumbnail images to free Todoist accounts.
• This update fixes a bug that would cause the scroll position to change when leaving and returning to the app under some circumstances.
• This update fixes a bug that would cause an unexpected animation when showing a context menu via trackpad or mouse under some circumstances.
• This update fixes a bug that made keyboard navigation on the Settings screen not work after opening it via keyboard shortcut from the article screen.
• This update fixes a bug that caused the swipe left menu to fail to appear under some circumstances.
• This update fixes a bug that caused some trackpad gestures intended to select text in an article to be treated as if they were gesturing to open the tug left menu or gesturing to dismiss the current screen.
• When opening Unread for the first time on a device, Unread now skips the tutorial if VoiceOver is enabled.
2.1 2020-04-20
Unread 2.1 adds trackpad and mouse support for iPad, new keyboard commands, and more.

Trackpad and Mouse Support

This update adds full support for the trackpad and mouse on iPad. With a trackpad or mouse, opening the tug left menu, backing out of the existing view, and flicking away a full-screen image work just like scrolling: two-finger swipe on a trackpad or one-finger swipe on a Magic Mouse 2. Buttons, navigation bar items, and links in articles have hover effects.

An Apple Magic Keyboard with built-in trackpad, Apple Magic Mouse 2, or Apple Magic Trackpad 2 is recommended. If your Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad takes batteries it is an older model. Trackpad and mouse support requires iPadOS 13.4.

New Keyboard Commands

This update adds these keyboard commands:

• Press N from the article list to open the currently selected article in a new window. This also works for other screens with lists of items.
• Press command-N to open a new window. The new window will start at the same screen as the current window.
• Press command-comma to open Settings from almost any screen.

Additional Improvements

This update also adds these improvements:

• For customers using Feedbin, Unread now uses better article list images for some articles. This change will not apply to articles downloaded to the device before this update is installed.
• If the feed text of an article has an embedded YouTube video, Unread will now consider the YouTube thumbnail for that video a possible article list image. This change will not apply to articles downloaded to the device before this update is installed.
• After scrolling the article list via keyboard to the top, to the bottom, down one page, or up one page, Unread will now clear the current selection. Using the up or down arrow to select a new article will then select a visible article. This change also applies to other screens with lists of items.
• The border around the Cancel button in the Add Subscription view has been removed.
• Next Article and Previous Article are now available as actions when VoiceOver is enabled.
• This update fixes some bugs around using the up and down arrow to select an article in an article list when there is no selected article. This change also applies to other screens with lists of items.
• This update fixes some display bugs around MacStories articles that represent podcast episodes. Some fixes will not apply to articles downloaded to the device before this update is installed.
• This update fixes a bug that caused Edit Subscription to be unavailable for subscriptions in Fever accounts. Subscriptions in Fever accounts cannot be altered, but webpage text settings can be updated for subscriptions in Fever accounts.
• This update adds performance improvements around retrieving articles and caching webpage text.
• This update fixes a bug in which Unread would allow horizontal scrolling under some circumstances in which it should not.
• This update fixes a bug that could cause Unread to crash under some circumstances.
