• BACKGROUND REFRESH • Unread keeps your subscriptions up to date with power-efficient background updating. Articles and images are saved to your device for convenient offline reading.

• BIG THUMBNAILS • Turn on the optional inline thumbnails to see big previews of article images while you scroll.

• FOOTNOTE POPOVERS • Articles with properly formatted footnotes will show convenient popovers when you need to read a footnote.

• 1PASSWORD INTEGRATION • Get your accounts set up quickly.

• ACCESSIBILITY • Unread has 100% VoiceOver coverage. Every screen and every feature is available to users with vision impairments. Actions on articles can be quickly triggered using actions on the accessibility rotor.

What's New in the Latest Version 1.9.13

Last updated on Sep 19, 2019
Old Versions
Unread 1.9.13 is now available, adding support for iOS 13.

Dark Mode Support:

iOS 13 adds a dark mode. Unread now has two different theme settings when running on iOS 13: one for light mode and one for dark mode. The default theme for dark mode is Black. On an existing installation, the default theme for light mode will be the previously set theme — even if that theme is not particularly dark.

The menu presenting theme options now categorizes themes into light themes and dark themes when running on iOS 13. Unread will suggest light themes for light mode and dark themes for dark mode, but you can select any theme for either mode.

All themes are now available before making the in-app purchase.

Other Changes:

• Selecting “Copy” in the share sheet for an article now copies only a link to the article. It does not include an article summary in the copied text. The “Copy Link” action has been removed from the share sheet.

• This update fixes bugs around the share sheet and around in-app purchases.

1.9.12
Jun 17, 2019
This update contains these improvements:

• Fixes a bug that could cause some articles to display extraneous whitespace.
• Fixes a bug that caused duplicate images on articles from interestingengineering.com.
• API requests to Feedbin now use the feedbin.com domain instead of feedbin.me.
• Adds forward-thinking compatibility improvements.
• Adds an Unlock Purchase Status section to the bottom of the About screen. This shows when you purchased the Unlock.
• Checks the Unread Web Service looking for announcements once a day. If you wish to disable this, you can turn off Show App News in the Advanced section of the Settings screen.

The last two bullet items are intended to help prepare customers for Unread 2, a major new version that I expect to release within the next few months. Follow the Golden Hill Software Blog at goldenhillsoftware.com/blog/ for updates.
1.9.11
Apr 19, 2019
This update incorporates these improvements:

• Fixes a bug that could cause footnote references to appear in article summaries displayed in the article list.
• Fixes a bug that could cause the interface to lock up briefly while refreshing your account.
• Fixes a bug that could cause the top of the home screen to use more space than it should under some circumstances.
• Fixes a crash that could occur when caching images under some circumstances.

This update is also compiled with a newer version of Xcode (10.2) against the iOS 12.2 SDK with Swift 5.
1.9.10
Jan 11, 2019
Unread 1.9.10 fixes a crash that could occur when refreshing under some circumstances.
1.9.9
Jan 2, 2019
This update adds these improvements:

• Image caching is now much faster for some articles.
• After resetting the image cache on the Settings screen, Unread will again cache images for articles whose images were deleted if those articles are still eligible for image caching.
• This update fixes a bug for customers whose syncing service is only available via a VPN connection that could cause read/unread status changes to sometimes get lost.
• This update fixes a bug that could cause Unread to crash when caching images under some circumstances.
• This update fixes a bug that caused summaries of some articles from The Verge to include HTML code.
• This update fixes a bug that prevented syncing with Inoreader from working on 32-bit devices (iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, 2012 iPad).
• This update fixes a bug that prevented Xbox Wire images and TouchArcade images from appearing for some customers.
• If no date is specified for an article, the default date will now be the date at which Unread first sees the article.
• For customers using Feedly, when there are multiple image attachments to an article Unread will now include only one of those images. This resolves issues with some articles where there would be duplicate images. It also resolves issues with some articles where one would need to scroll past several images before getting to the article text.
• This update fixes a bug that would sometimes cause a four finger swipe to switch apps on an iPad to simultaneously be interpretted as a swipe back to the previous view.
• This update fixes a bug that, for customers using Miniflux, would cause Unread to associate an outdated list of subscriptions with a tag if that tag had no associated subscriptions.
• This update fixes a bug that caused unintended scrolling when tapping on rows in table views under some circumstances.
• This update fixes a date formatting bug.

If you are happy about this update, please leave a review.
1.9.8
Nov 7, 2018
This update contains these improvements:

• I added hardware compatibility updates.
• I fixed a bug that could cause Unread to display raw HTML for articles under some circumstances. This fix applies to new articles, but not to articles that a previous version of Unread downloaded to the device.
• I fixed a bug that would cause Unread to cache error responses for images.
• I fixed a bug that could cause read status changes and starred/saved status changes to become lost under some circumstances if made when the device is offline.
• I fixed a bug that could cause Unread to not retrieve articles from some syncing services under some circumstances.
• Unread will no longer show low quality thumbnail images for Reddit articles. This change applies to new articles, but not to articles that a previous version of Unread downloaded to the device.

If this update makes you happy, please leave a review in the App Store.
1.9.7
Oct 9, 2018
This update fixes a bug for customers using Feedly that could cause Unread to use a low quality thumbnail image for an article when a higher quality image is available. This fix will apply to new articles, but will not apply to articles that Unread already downloaded to the device.

This update also addresses a bug that sometimes prevented images from appearing as expected in the article list.
1.9.6
Sep 17, 2018
This update adds these improvements:

• For customers using NewsBlur, Unread will no longer show placeholder text on articles that do not have titles. This change does not apply to articles that a previous version of Unread already downloaded to the device. I want to thank Samuel Clay of NewsBlur for adding an API change that made this possible.
• Unread will now show image thumbnails for articles from polygon.com.
• I fixed a bug that would prevent images from loading in the Readability view on some articles.
• I added improvements to make it easier for customers using FreshRSS via its Fever API implementation to setup their accounts in Unread.
• I fixed a bug that could cause read status changes and starred/saved status changes to become lost if made when the device is offline.
• I added compatibility improvements.

If this update makes you happy, please leave a review.
1.9.5
Jul 16, 2018
Unread 1.9.5 adds these improvements:

• Unread 1.9.4 introduced a compatibility issue into the Readability view for some sites. This update fixes that.
• Unread will now retrieved starred articles from Inoreader Saved Web Pages in addition to starred articles from Inoreader feeds.
• The update adds a fix for some crashes.

If this update makes you happy, please leave a review in the App Store.
1.9.4
Jun 11, 2018
Unread 1.9.4 adds minor improvements:

• Unread will no longer display the number of unread articles next to the “ALL ARTICLES” text. It will continue to display that number of unread articles next to the “UNREAD ARTICLES” text just above it.
• I made changes to help avoid Unread using a low quality image as an article thumbnail.
• Unread now removes “face” and “color” attributes from HTML elements in articles. This addresses issues where text in some articles contrasted with some background colors. This fix will not apply to articles already downloaded to the device.
• I added modest improvements to the Readability parser. The most notable improvement is that there should be far fewer instances of excessive whitespace in the Readability view.
• I added text to the purchase screens to help clarify that an in-app purchase made on an iPhone can be restored to an iPad and vice-versa.
• I removed HockeyApp for crash reporting.

Finally, I made significant changes to the privacy policy in light of GDPR. I was in good shape with regard to GDPR because I have never wanted to collect personal information. I have a simple business model, selling an app. However I updated the privacy policy to be explicit about the right to have personal information supplied or deleted upon request. I removed HockeyApp for crash reporting. The privacy policy is also now more explicit about Unread’s interaction with third party web sites when retrieving embedded objects such as images and when retrieving text for the Readability view. A detailed list of changes to the policy is available in its Document History section.

If this update makes you happy, please leave a review in the App Store.
1.9.3
Apr 23, 2018
This update adds these improvements:

• Unread will no longer show “Untitled” or placeholder text from syncing services when displaying posts without titles. This change does not apply to articles downloaded before installing this update. Inoreader and NewsBlur set the title to the first few words of an article if it has no title, so this change does not apply to articles downloaded from either of those services.
• Tapping on an article date in the article view now has the same effect as tapping on the title. Unread will open the article in its readability view or on the web, depending on your settings.
• Equation images from zhihu.com now load properly. This change does not apply to articles that Unread downloaded before installing this update.
• I fixed a bug that prevented images from loading in Readability view for some sites.
• When the App Icon Badge is enabled and Mark Read On Open is enabled, Unread will decrement the icon badge number when an article is opened instead of when the user leaves the article.

If this update makes you happy, please leave a review.
1.9.2
Mar 27, 2018
This update adds the following improvements:

• I made several changes to help avoid Unread using a low quality image as an article thumbnail.
• In Unread 1.9, I added changes to make Unread incorporate many more images from articles for Feedly users. With this update, Unread still does this but it filters out particularly small images.
• I added minor share sheet compatibility improvements for sharing articles with DEVONthink To Go, Facebook Messenger, Google Inbox, Micro.blog, Slack, Tweetbot, Twitter, and Twitterrific.
• I increased the line-height of text inside table cells. This improves the layout of some email newsletters. Both Feedbin and NewsBlur allow customers to accept incoming email newsletters and to treat them as articles.
• Fixed a bug that caused URLs of articles from zoom.nl to be incorrect for Feedly users.

If this update makes you happy, please leave a review.
1.9.1
Mar 12, 2018
Unread 1.9.1 adds these improvements:

• Added support for Feedbin saved searches.
• Tweaked the timing of haptic feedback. When in response to pulling the screen in a certain direction, haptic feedback now happens when you reach the pull threshold instead of when the resulting view appears. When the options view is triggered by tapping on the screen, haptic feedback now happens upon tap rather than when the options view appears.
• Fixed a bug that caused image flickering in the article list.
• Tweaked some thresholds to make it less likely that pulling up to Mark All Read will be invoked accidentally.
• Changed the Inoreader sync process to retrieve and display the list of saved searches earlier in that process.
• Fixed a bug that I inadvertently introduced in Unread 1.9 that caused the refresh indicator not to show the animation when refresh was initiated by a mechanism other than pull to refresh.
• Fixed a crasher that could occur when opening a folder that did not contain any feeds.
• Fixed some in-app purchase bugs.

If this makes you happy, please leave a review in the App Store.
1.9
Feb 21, 2018
I am excited to release Unread 1.9 with a new design for the iPhone X, support for Inoreader, and much more.

These are the highlights of this update:

• A new design for the iPhone X
• Support for Inoreader
• The ability to open links with in-app Safari in Reader mode
• The ability to open links in Firefox
• Haptic feedback for swipe actions (on devices that support it)

I also added a variety of smaller improvements:

• Links from articles to apps in the App Store and to other iTunes products will now open in an in-app store view, even if the link contains an affiliate code or a campaign code. The affiliate code or campaign code will be passed to the in-app store view.
• When sharing an article via Messages, Unread will no longer incorporate other metadata as text. Unread will simply send the URL and Messages will generate a thumbnail of the web page.
• The About screen is reorganized and incorporates a new Credits page and a new Frequently Asked Questions page.
• When updating articles for Feed Wrangler smart streams, the activity text will be more specific about its progress.
• Unread now incorporates a different variation of the Whitney font for activity text, such as “Caching images (1 of 100)”, that allows for monospaced digits. This avoids the text from being centered every time the number of processed items is incremented.
• For Feedly users, Unread will now incorporate images that are not included in the article content but are referenced as thumbnails or image enclosures.
• Unread’s footnote popovers now work with Feedly.

Finally I added some bug fixes:

• I fixed a display issue with presented Safari View Controllers on an iPhone X in landscape mode.
• I fixed bugs around maintaining article list scroll position and preventing image flickering when new articles are found or when the device is rotated.
• I fixed bugs around reloading the Dashboard screen (the first screen after tapping to open an account from the home screen).
• New users will no longer be asked for permission to set badge numbers before enabling badge numbers.
• I fixed a layout bug around the tutorial shown when the app is first installed.
• I reinstated shadows in view transitions. I had inadvertently removed those shadows in a prior update.
• I fixed a bug that could cause the scroll indicator on the article list to become jittery.
• I improved Unread’s heuristics around determining when an article is a linked list article.
• I fixed a display issue with presented Safari View Controllers on an iPhone X in landscape mode.
• I fixed an unread count inconsistency issue that could occur if an account was refreshed shortly after an article was marked read.
• I fixed a bug that could cause the home screen font size and/or background colors to become incorrect under some circumstances.
• I fixed a compatibility issue with Miniflux via its Fever API implementation.
• View animations are now much smoother on the iPhone X when in landscape orientation.

If this update makes you happy, please leave a review.
1.8.6
Dec 16, 2017
• I fixed a bug that could cause unread article counts to become incorrect under a certain set of circumstances.
• If Unread receives an article with a publish date that is in the future, it uses the date at which it initially received the article for the publish date.
• I added some image caching performance improvements.
• I fixed some VoiceOver bugs.
1.8.4
Nov 27, 2017
This update contains a variety of minor improvements:

• When using the Black theme, the background on the options view presented when you swipe to the left now has a pure black background.
• Safari View Controller navigation bars and toolbars are now tinted with a color based on the theme.
• I fixed a bug that would allow one really long word or hyperlink in an article to result in content flowing horizontally off of the screen.
• I fixed a bug that could cause static content pages, such as pages of release notes, to be initially scrolled to an incorrect location.
• I fixed a bug that could cause table cell separator lines from rendering oddly while swiping back a view.
• I fixed a bug that could cause Unread to crash when saving an image.

If this makes you happy, please leave a review.
1.8.3
Nov 15, 2017
Unread 1.8.3 adds a Black theme. This new theme is similar to the Night theme but its background color is a true dark black. This new theme shines on the OLED display of the iPhone X. This theme is available to all customers who have purchased the app's unlocked feature set.

This update also adds a couple bug fixes:

• Fixed a bug that could cause status bar issues after starting to dismiss a Safari View Controller and then aborting that dismissal.
• Fixed some article layout bugs.

If this makes you happy, please leave a review.
1.8.2
Nov 9, 2017
The previous update introduced a bug that prevented some users from being able to log into Feedly and NewsBlur. This update fixes that bug.
1.8.1
Nov 8, 2017
Unread 1.8 adds these minor improvements:

• This update addresses some in-app purchase issues.
• Unread now uses HockeyApp for crash reporting. The privacy policy has been updated to reflect this change.

Unread 1.8 added these new features:

• Support for Slide Over and Split View on iPad
• Improvements to readability view
• Hardware compatibility improvements

If these updates make you happy, please leave a review.
1.8
Nov 1, 2017
Unread 1.8 adds these new features:

• Support for Slide Over and Split View on iPad
• Improvements to readability view
• Hardware compatibility improvements

Implementation Notes:

• When using Slide Over or Split View on iPad, Unread will use slightly smaller font sizes if its portion of the screen is narrow.
• Activity text such as “Refreshing all feeds…” and notification text such as “Readability View Loaded” now appears at the bottom of the screen on all devices. Previously activity text would appear instead of the status bar and notification text would appear just underneath the status bar. This avoids the activity text interfering with the drag handle on iPad with Split View or Slide Over and has benefits for hardware compatibility.
• I removed “Classic (Unread)” as an option for the Open Links In setting. This setting resulted in Unread opening links in a legacy in-app browser that predated Safari View Controller. Since Unread no longer supports versions of iOS that lack Safari View Controller and since Safari View Controller provides a much more consistent web browsing experience, it made little sense to continue maintaining this legacy browser.

This update also adds these bug fixes:

• Tapping the title bar at the bottom of the screen to scroll to the bottom now works reliably on iOS 11.
• There was a bug on iOS 11 where if you selected “Open in Safari” from a share sheet on an iPad while Safari was in a Slide Over window, the screen could be left in an inconsistent state. This is fixed.
• Logging in to Minimal Reader using its emulation of the Fever API now works correctly.
• I removed a redundant “Share” menu item that would appear after selecting text and would work less reliably than the “Share…” menu item.

I am excited for this update and thrilled that I am able to provide Split View and Slide Over support as a free update. I started work on Split View and Slide Over support in July, before we even announced that my company was acquiring Unread. If this free update makes you happy, please leave a review.
1.7.6
Sep 27, 2017
This update includes a variety of small improvements and bug fixes, specifically:

• Fixes related to migrating a purchase from the Supertop Unread app on iOS 11

• Fixes to some threading bugs

• Fixes to cosmetic issues when showing screens of static text such as those with release notes or the privacy policy

• Fixes for image caching issues that, under some circumstances, could make Unread take a very long time to cache images associated with a single article

• If “Strip All Break Tags” is enabled, Unread will now replace line breaks with a space instead of with nothing. This addresses display issues with some articles.

• On new installations of Unread, the default setting for Image Caching is now “Wi-fi Only”. This does not affect devices where Unread was already installed and is being updated with the new version.

If this update makes you happy, please leave a review.
1.7.5
Sep 15, 2017
Unread stores account credentials securely in the Keychain. Keychain items are not included in all types of device backups. This update improves Unread’s handling of an account with missing credentials:

• If credentials for an account are not found in the Keychain, the home screen will show a red exclamation mark where it would normally show the number of unread articles. Tapping on the account will bring the user to a login screen.

• Unread will no longer attempt to refresh an account if its credentials are not found.

If this update makes you happy please leave a review.
1.7.4
Sep 5, 2017
This minor update adds some bug fixes.

In version 1.7 I inadvertently introduced a bug where the Last Background Fetch time displayed under Unread in the Settings app was not being updated correctly. This update fixes that.

I also inadvertently introduced a bug in version 1.7 that broke animation of theme changes. This update fixes that as well.

Finally, I added several accessibility fixes. My predecessors clearly prioritized accessibility in the app. I am eager to continue doing so. The accessibility fixes are:

• If you execute the “Speak Screen” function while viewing an article, your device will now correctly read the article and stop at the end of that article.

• If you execute the “Speak Screen” function on any screen where the title of the view is displayed at the bottom, the title of the view will be spoken before the contents.

• Tapping on an account on the home screen when VoiceOver is enabled will now reliably result in the visible account information text being spoken.

• Tapping the 1Password button when logging into Feed Wrangler, Feedbin, or Fever when VoiceOver is enabled will result in the text “Open Password Manager” being spoken.

If this makes you happy, please leave a review.
1.7.3
Aug 28, 2017
This update addresses display issues for articles that include nested table elements. Such elements are rare in feeds but they are common in email newsletters. Both Feedbin and NewsBlur allow the customer to accept incoming email newsletters and to treat them as articles.

This update also fixes a bug where the “View Alt Text” screen sometimes cannot be dismissed.

Finally this update includes fixes for minor thumbnail image issues.

If you like these improvements please leave a review.
1.7.2
Aug 18, 2017
Version 1.7.2:

• Fixed the “Open in Safari” and “Open in Chrome” share sheet items

• Fixes to thumbnail bugs and image caching bugs.

• Added a note to the Migration Guide stating that migrating purchases requires the most recent version (2.6.3) of the Supertop Unread app

If you like these improvements please consider leaving a review.

Version 1.7.1:

• Fixed a bug where unread counts were not properly updated under some circumstances.

• Fixed a bug where the list of categories was not always shown to Feedly users.

If you like these improvements please consider leaving a review.

Version 1.7:

Golden Hill Software is excited to release its first version of Unread. This update contains three big improvements:

• Free migration of purchases from previous versions
• Universal app for iPhone and iPad
• Account login improvements

Unread 1.7 requires iOS 10 or later.

= Free Migration of Purchases from Previous Versions =

There was no way to simply move the app from Supertop’s App Store account to our account. Therefore we ask customers to download Unread 1.7 as a new app. This version of Unread allows customers to migrate purchases from the Supertop Unread apps at no charge. The free unlock will also work for customers who transferred a purchase from Nice Boy LLC (Jared Sinclair’s company) to Supertop. The app includes a Migration Guide with more details.

= Universal App for iPhone and iPad =

Unread is now one universal app for both iPhone and iPad. After purchasing or transferring the unlock functionality on one device you can use “Restore Purchases” on other devices to unlock them at no additional cost. Unread now has just one in-app purchase option for new customers: a full unlock at a fixed price. Tipping functionality has been removed.

We want to thank Supertop for their work to make Unread a universal app. They did this work before we acquired the app.
= Account Login Improvements =

Since existing customers will need to install this update as a new app, customers will need to log in to their feed service accounts again. We used this as an opportunity to look for any improvements we could make to the account login workflows.

The web-based login workflows for Feedly and NewsBlur now use Safari View Controller.

The login workflow for Fever now asks for the Fever URL on a dedicated screen. After a Fever URL is entered, Unread will verify that it is able to communicate with Fever using that URL before asking for the account email address and password. Unread strongly encourages, but does not require, the use of HTTPS when communicating with Fever. If using HTTPS to communicate with Fever, Unread now ensures that the server has a valid certificate. The login workflow for Fever now includes 1Password integration.

This update also adds subtle improvements to the feedback provided while making network requests during the login process. All of the login workflows have been improved to provide more precise error messages when logging in does not succeed for any reason.

= Additional Improvements =

In addition to the changes noted above, this update contains several minor improvements such as the following:

• A new “About” screen reflects the change of ownership.
• Unread now displays screens of static text, such as those for release notes and attributions, in a manner similar to the way in which it displays article content.
• Unread has a new privacy policy.

If you have any questions or feedback, please contact us at support@goldenhillsoftware.com. If you like this update, please leave a review.

This update also adds subtle improvements to the feedback provided while making network requests during the login process. All of the login workflows have been improved to provide more precise error messages when logging in does not succeed for any reason.

= Additional Improvements =

In addition to the changes noted above, this update contains several minor improvements such as the following:

* A new “About” screen reflects the change of ownership.
* Unread now displays screens of static text, such as those for release notes and attributions, in a manner similar to the way in which it displays article content.
* Unread has a new privacy policy.
