De ideale ph-waarde varieert van 5,5 tot 6,5. Dit is afhankelijk van de grondsoort, het organisch stofgehalte, het slib- of lutumgehalte en natuurlijk de teelt.

Te zure of alkalische (pH waarde groter dan 7) grond leidt tot opbrengstverlies en veroorzaakt ernstige schade aan de ontwikkeling van plant en dier.
