About WBV

Whole-body vibration refers to the vibration transmitted to the human body whilst supported by a vibrating surface. The most common exposure occurs through the buttocks when seated in a vehicle. Long term exposure to high amplitude whole-body vibration is strongly associated with the development of back pain and other adverse health effects.

The Whole Body Vibration application (WBV) utilizes the accelerometer within an iPod or iPhone to provide an estimate of vibration amplitude consistent with the methods described in ISO2631.1. Frequency weighted r.m.s and VDV values are presented graphically with reference to the health guidance caution zone for exposures of varying durations. Summary data and acceleration time series are available to be emailed or downloaded.

The application is intended for use within occupational contexts to provide a simple screening or monitoring tool for use by workplace safety and health staff. It is suitable for use to estimate whole-body vibration amplitude of seated operators of all vehicles, plant or equipment. Use is straight forward. After entering trial information, sampling is commenced with a tap and the device placed on the operator’s seat during a period of normal operation. At the completion of the period, sampling is ended with a tap and the results calculated and made available for viewing and emailing.

The application has been developed by the consultants at the Byte Works under direction of Robin Burgess-Limerick, Professor of Human Factors in the Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre at The University of Queensland, AUSTRALIA. The project was funded by the NSW Coal Services Health and Safety Trust.

WBV supports the use of GPS, optionally in the foreground and always when background processing is used. The location information is included in the raw data file, which is available using the export features. Continued use of GPS running in the background (or foreground) can dramatically decrease battery life. You can turn GPS on or off using the WBV preferences, available from the Settings app.

Minor updates to keep up with iOS changes.
2.3.2
Nov 14, 2016
This app has been updated by Apple to display the Apple Watch app icon.

• Corrected an incompatibility with iOS 9 and iOS 10 that prevented data collection in the background.
2.3.1
Dec 22, 2015
1. The results.cv and exchange.wbv files that were previously only available as email attachments are now also saved with other application data. This means iTunes can be used to manually copy these files to a desktop computer.

2. Some minor formatting issues that cropped up under iOS 9 have been fixed.
2.3
Jun 4, 2015
GPS data is now optionally supported for the raw data files. This allows offline processing to correlate vibrations with location.

Background processing is supported, so you can use other apps or allow the device to go to sleep while still collecting data. You also get data if the battery dies during collection, right up to the time where the device looses power.

Both GPS and background processing can be disabled in the preferences to extend battery life.

Sample time limits are supported to automatically break long samples into smaller, more easily analyzed chunks of data.
2.2
Jun 29, 2014
1. Multithreading makes calculations nearly twice as fast on newer, dual-core machines. It's also quad-core ready!

2. Cancel buttons have been added so you can abort long calculations for large data sets when entering the detailed view or the 1/3 octave plots.

3. Fixed a bug that caused 1/3 octave plots to improperly display Y axis vibrations.
2.1
Jun 24, 2014
• Automatically divide large trials into smaller sub trials for easier data management.
• Additional safeguards are in place to prevent loss of data if a battery dies during data collection.
2.0
May 2, 2014
Version 2.0 adds detailed plots of the frequency space, allowing on-the-spot analysis of the vibration contributions to RMS and VDV values.

Plots of the raw data allow the user to identify specific time periods when vibrations were present during the test, as well as eliminate transients at the start and end of the data set.
