刘兰芳的评书说演，声音洪亮，神完气足，干练中透着豪迈，很适合说演英雄人物与征战故事。又因为她早年习唱大鼓书，嗓音受到过良好训练，对音乐的感悟也被自然地带到了评书说演之中。因而其评书说演在听觉上，更有一种铿锵起伏的声韵美感。尤其是其说书时高亢嘹亮的声音造型，使得刘兰芳成为家喻户晓特色鲜明的评书表演艺术家。

相声里有“帅、买、怪、坏”四种风格，各有特色。帅，是说台风稳健大气，儒雅沉雄，不愠不火，潇洒自如；买，是指嘴皮子利索，气铆的足，多用贯口等丰富剧情；怪，是指嗓音特殊，剑走偏锋，收到奇效；坏，是指机智幽默，诙谐，多抖包袱。用在评书上，袁阔成先生占“帅”，刘兰芳先生占“买”，单田芳先生占“怪”，田连元先生占“坏”。应该是非常恰当的！
