When you look into an animal’s eyes you sense an energetic essence. A life-force animates the Earth’s creatures. They are more than machines. This non-physical aspect of our pets is the part we most adore. It comes when we call, comforts us when we are sad, protects us, and makes us laugh.

I call this vital spirit—animas. Animas is the Latin root of the word animals. It means souls, breath, and life. No other part of the animal is as important, yet we rarely discuss it in veterinary medicine…until now.
