People have asked me, 'Mark, what's behind the concept of Let's Eat Pare?'. My answer is actually very simple. Filipinos, as warm-of-a-people we are, welcome family, friends and even strangers to the table whenever we are stumbled upon eating.
The catch phrase we would usually use is, "Kain po tayo" or "Kain".
It has been a ritualistic habit for most, we greet people by means of an invitation. You never will see this on any travel abroad. And for me this speaks volumes of who are we as a nation, being accommodating to foreigners with our captivating smiles and cheerful disposition is part of our identity. It just comes naturally.
This characteristic is more than just a polite gesture to others. It's found deeply in the meals that we share. Anthony Bourdain once said, "You learn a lot about someone by sharing a meal together". This my friends is what we stand for. It's the experience that goes beyond the glorious food.
So if you see a friend, co-worker, family member or even stranger while you are devouring your salmon baguette, pan seared foie gras, cup of Joe or even a "tusoked" fishball, please give him/her a short tap and say "Kain po tayo." "Let's Eat Pare".
Let the fun begin as Filipinos.
