《反恐精英》最初是Valve旗下游戏《半条命》（Half-Life）的其中一个游戏模组，由Minh Lee与JessCliffe开发。后该模组被Valve购买和两名制作人在Valve公司继续工作。该系列一共有五部，分别是《半条命：反恐精英》、《反恐精英》及其资料片《反恐精英：零点行动》，起源引擎重制的《反恐精英：起源》和进行全面修改的新作《反恐精英：全球攻势》。
《半条命：反恐精英》Beta 1.0-Beta7.1，于1999年6月19日开始更新，2000年9月13日结束更新。主要完善了《反恐精英》的本体，平衡性等也是在这个时期建立。
《半条命：反恐精英》V1.0-V1.5，于2000年11月8日开始更新，2002年6月12日停止更新。完善了游戏的细部，在1.5版本时游戏已经具备很强的可玩性。但这个时候《反恐精英》仍为游戏模组而非独立游戏。
《反恐精英》，即很多玩家口中的1.6版本。2003年9月15日发售，游戏使用Steam联机。
《反恐精英：零点行动》，《反恐精英》的资料片，2004年3月23日发售。该做由Valve和Turtle Rock Studios开发，Valve发行。提供了单人任务和任期模式，大幅增强的AI敌人、修正的平衡性与更高精细度的模型。
《反恐精英：起源》，起源引擎重制版。2004年10月7日，一开始使用起源2004引擎。具有新的物理系统、渲染系统和全新的地图。《反恐精英：起源2010》是用新起源引擎制作的重制版，比2004版拥有更多的功能。2010年5月8日发布，目前最新版本是V75版本。
《反恐精英：全球攻势》2012年8月21日发售。该作由Valve和Hidden Path Entertainment开发。推出了新的枪支和新的地图，以及新手训练、军火库模式等。
