3DO倒闭后，英雄无敌系列花落Ubisoft手中，之后UBI授权了拥有丰富的策略游戏开发经验的俄国游戏开发商NivalInteractive开发H5，任FabriceCambounet为制作人。游戏采用全3D制作，采用改良过后的寂静风暴引擎，初接触的人对视角可能会不习惯，不过久了就习惯了。游戏更像H3，甚至有人认为H5是H3的3D复刻版，其实H5也有H5的创新，不过也有一些像H4的地方。游戏采用了对战向设计，所以比如像宝物的效果上就会显得不是很强大。
