About Circus 157

CIRCUS 157 is de codenaam van een operatie van de Royal Air Force. Die vindt plaats op 5 mei 1942. Het doelwit: een krachtcentrale in het Noord-Franse Lille. Zes bommenwerpers en een escorte van Spitfires worden het luchtruim ingestuurd. Technisch defect en zwaar bewolkt weer hinderen de operatie. Tijdens de terugvlucht duiken Duitse jachtvliegtuigen op. Er ontstaat een luchtgevecht. Vijf Spitfires crashen in het Frans-Vlaamse grensgebied. Vier van de vijf piloten overleven het niet.

Twee fietsroutes brengen dit vergeten WO 2-verhaal opnieuw tot leven. Het is een spannend verhaal, met veel menselijke dramatiek, zowel in de lucht als op de grond. Volg de fietsknooppunten en ontdek de crashplaatsen, de monumenten en de begraafplaatsen van de Circus 157-piloten.
