About Kāhui Ako ki Ōtākaro
Talofa lava, Mālo ē lelei, Ni sa bula, Kia Orana, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Fakatalofa atu, Noa ‘ia, Mauri, Kia Ora and warm Pasifika greetings.
This app is designed to improve Culturally Responsive Practice across Kāhui Ako ki Ōtākaro | Ōtākaro Community of Learning.
The idea came from a group of Pacific teachers wanting to have an app that teachers from their Kāhui Ako could access easily to help build their confidence and cultural capability when interacting with their Pacific learners.
Aotearoa has a large Pacific population, making up 8% of the country’s population, that is linguistically, socially and culturally diverse. Our Pacific learners have diverse first languages, diverse gender identities, socio-economic backgrounds, religious beliefs and immigration statuses. Some may have recently immigrated to New Zealand, and others, may be third or fourth generation New Zealanders.
However, while some schools have the benefit of Pacific teachers to champion Pacific knowledge; most have had no opportunity to learn about Pacific cultures, know what resources are available, and what the Tapasā framework or Pacific Education plan is in detail.
The App is a brainchild of Joseph Houghton in collaboration with Daisy Lavea- Timo of Cross-Polynate and will provide staff with resources at the click of a button. The app will aid teachers and leaders from lesson planning through to strategic planning.
What is most appealing about this app is that it is interactive and constantly evolving.
This function will cater for real time demands during language weeks and other cultural dates throughout the year.
This app was produced by world leading Cultural Services agency Kiwa Digital. For more www.kiwadigital.com
