About Karlurri pata kawulurrangken

Mawng birds.

The matching of Mawng bird names with their English and scientific names was done by Ruth Singer and Janet Mardbinda in collaboration with Mawng-speaking elders Nita Garidjalalug, Nancy Ngalmindjalmag, Frank Nabalamirri, Paul Milaidjaidj, Rosemary Urabadi, Solomon Yalbarr and Rachel Meiyinbara. Carolyn Coleman's comparative list of bird names in Arnhem Land languages was used as a starting point for checking the names of birds. Thanks to Carly Pettiona for additional assistance at the University of Melbourne.

The people who say the Mawng bird names in this app are: Nancy Ngalmindjalmag, Solomon Yalbarr, Rosemary Urabadi and Rachel Meiyinbara.

The painting of a bird that appears when you open this app is by Jeffrey Gurruwiwi from Warruwi Community, Goulburn Island, Northern Territory. The bird in the painting is the Sooty Oystercatcher, Haematopus fuliginosus known in Mawng as Katikatik. The name katikatik covers both species of Oystercatcher found at Warruwi.

This app has been produced by the Research Unit for Indigenous Language at Melbourne University and Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education, as part of the Getting in Touch project.
