Filters

- We’ve added a new “Auto” button to the Edit panel in the Document view. When you choose “Auto”, Genius Scan selects the best filter that matches the type of your document (photo, magazine, text, etc.).
- The Black & White and Color filters are smarter at treating specific documents, such as magazine pages or carbon-copy-style documents.

Improvements

- Users who want to give Genius Scan limited access to their photo library can now easily update their selection in the Photo picker.
- When Text recognition is active for a document, you can now see its progress in the Document screen by tapping Edit > Text.

Bug fixes

- Fixed a bug where a page preview was not displayed when long-pressing the page thumbnail in the Page Selection screen.
- Fixed a bug where some date suggestions did not appear in the Smart Document Renaming screen.

Misc

We’ve made internal changes to the app to improve Genius Scan’s performance and stability when exporting documents to cloud services such as Google Cloud, Dropbox, and OneDrive.

Photo picker

The photo picker now directly shows all photos by default without requiring you to select an album first. 99% of the time, that's what you want! You can still navigate to albums if needed.

Clarified document export status

Until today, Genius Scan denoted the "status" of documents with a colored dot next to each document. This feature is aimed at letting you know that your document has been successfully exported.

As some of you rightfully told us, this could cause confusion as it conflated each document’s Genius Cloud sync status with its export status.

With this update, Genius Scan separates the two statuses.

Export Status

When you export a document (through Email or to Google Drive or Dropbox…), you will see a corresponding icon on each document denoting the successful export to the chosen export destination. Should an error happen, this icon will turn red, and you can open the document to see why.

Genius Cloud Sync Status

We've added a new Genius Cloud status screen (accessible by tapping the button at the top left of the document list). This screen shows you at a glance when Genius Cloud last synced and if any document is pending export.

Misc

- Tweaked the design of the document list. It's a subtle change but we love it, so if you're eagle-eyed, let us know what you think!
- Tweaked the design of all configuration screens for a more modern look.
- Improved the performance of receipts and business card recognition.
- Fixed a potential crash when exporting to SugarSync.
- Fixed a potential crash when exporting to WebDAV.
- Fixed an issue preventing the WebDAV plugin from listing directories when the WebDAV configuration included a server port number.

Features

Improved Text Recognition

Genius Scan can now rely on Apple Vision as a text recognition engine, leading to much faster and more accurate text recognition. Genius Scan still offers support for all the languages that Apple Vision doesn't support yet. The switch will be transparent.

Curvature Correction

Genius Scan introduces curvature correction, which lets you correct the curvature of documents, especially when you scan books. The option is available by tapping the Edit button on any scanned document and then toggling the curvature correction option.

Only show documents when importing scans from your Photos

When importing images from your photos, you can now only display photos that look like documents. This AI-based feature can save you much time when importing scans from your photos.

Genius Scan adds another cleverness to this feature: it will only crop and enhance the document if it looks like an uncropped or unprocessed document.

- Improved the design of the informative banners displayed at the top of the document list and in various places in the app.
- Multiple performance and design enhancements to the image picker.

Export by email

When users export a scan by email, it may get stuck in the Mail app's outbox, sometimes. So you think you sent your scan, but it didn't leave your phone. We added in-app guidance to help you solve this problem, should it happen to you.

Genius Scan, like most apps, used Google Analytics to gather some general usage data about the app: How many users are using Genius Scan every month? How often a feature is used? Do we see an abnormaly high error rate? What third-party export plugins are the most popular? This helps us focus our efforts on what's most useful to our customers.

Privacy is important to us personally, and we want to treat our users the way we want to be treated. While we had disabled all the aggressive features of Google Analytics and were not sending any personal data, we still had in mind to go a step further.

We're happy to say we've removed Google Analytics in Genius Scan 7.14. Genius Scan now uses TelemetryDeck, an analytics service that makes no compromise on privacy while still enabling us to understand what features are used and where we can improve the app.

Bug fixes

- Prevented an error causing the Genius Cloud servers to not see your recent purchases.
- Removed a memory leak when synchronizing with Genius Cloud.
- Fixed an issue where the "root" path wasn't properly taken in account in some instances when exporting to WebDAV.

Genius Sign Integration

We noticed that many of you wanted a convenient way to annotate or sign documents and were not aware that we also offer another app to do just that, Genius Sign. With this release, we have tightened the integration between Genius Scan and Genius Sign, enabling you to annotate a scanned document with a single tap in the document screen.

Smart Document Renaming

Smart Document Renaming now includes data detected in receipts and business cards. For instance, if you rename a receipt, you will be able to use the merchant name or the receipt's date with a single tap.

Auto-Export to Any Folder in Files (including iCloud Drive)

We are excited about this feature as it resolves a long-standing limitation of Genius Scan. Auto-Export to iCloud Drive has been replaced by Auto-Export to Files. This is much more powerful, allowing you to export to folders in iCloud Drive and any other location exposed in the Files app. Previously, Auto-Export to iCloud Drive was limited to exporting to the Genius Scan folder in iCloud Drive. If you already have an iCloud Drive auto-export configured, it will continue working as usual.

Enhancements

- Added support for edit mode in the search view. You can select, edit, delete, and move the search results.
- Improved the performance of the document renaming screen.
- Confirmation is now shown when moving files in the document list.
- Improved the performance of thumbnail loading in the document view.
- Improved the performance of the Genius Cloud synchronization.
- Made small visual tweaks.

Bug Fixes

- Addressed an issue that limited the available export destinations when exporting a single document from the document list.

A great update with plenty of fixes and improvements because we care about your user experience on various levels.

New

- Introduced a new search screen, which can be accessed just as quickly as before. Moving the search to a separate screen will allow us to make specific improvements to the search in future updates.
- Added a toggle in the Settings that allows you to disable Smart Data, which includes receipt and business card detection.

Enhancements

- Removed the banner at the bottom of the screen (which was only promoting Genius Scan Ultra) and replaced it with a better designed banner.
- Optimized the app's size. We have managed to shave off more than 25 MB! While Genius Scan was already slim compared to other apps in its category, this means being transferred over the network and less storage space occupied on your device.
- Improved consistency of the user interface in various screens, such as the export screen.
- Enhanced the Smart Data receipt date detection to prevent future dates from being selected, and improved the amount detection to avoid displaying absurd amounts.
- Improved the reliability of the Genius Cloud synchronization when dealing with multiple conflicts in a row.

Bug fixes

- Fixed an issue where the height of the search field was incorrect when it contained tags.
- Fixed an issue where the wrong document page was displayed after rotating your device.
- Fixed an issue where Genius Scan could start synchronizing with Genius Cloud too early, causing temporary errors because the server wasn't aware yet you had purchased Genius Scan Ultra.
- Fixed an issue where multiple Expensify accounts could be created.
- Enhanced the error reporting when your device refuses to write a file to disk, for instance when your storage is full.
- Prevented Genius Scan from being terminated by the system when it's running in the background and Auto-Export is active.
- Fixed multiple crashes.
