Features

Improved Text Recognition

Genius Scan can now rely on Apple Vision as a text recognition engine, leading to much faster and more accurate text recognition. Genius Scan still offers support for all the languages that Apple Vision doesn't support yet. The switch will be transparent.

Curvature Correction

Genius Scan introduces curvature correction, which lets you correct the curvature of documents, especially when you scan books. The option is available by tapping the Edit button on any scanned document and then toggling the curvature correction option.

Only show documents when importing scans from your Photos

When importing images from your photos, you can now only display photos that look like documents. This AI-based feature can save you much time when importing scans from your photos.

Genius Scan adds another cleverness to this feature: it will only crop and enhance the document if it looks like an uncropped or unprocessed document.

Enhancements

Export by email

When users export a scan by email, it may get stuck in the Mail app's outbox, sometimes. So you think you sent your scan, but it didn't leave your phone. We added in-app guidance to help you solve this problem, should it happen to you.

- Introduced a new search screen, which can be accessed just as quickly as before. Moving the search to a separate screen will allow us to make specific improvements to the search in future updates.
- Added a toggle in the Settings that allows you to disable Smart Data, which includes receipt and business card detection.

- Removed the banner at the bottom of the screen (which was only promoting Genius Scan Ultra) and replaced it with a better designed banner.
- Optimized the app's size. We have managed to shave off more than 25 MB! While Genius Scan was already slim compared to other apps in its category, this means being transferred over the network and less storage space occupied on your device.
- Improved consistency of the user interface in various screens, such as the export screen.
- Enhanced the Smart Data receipt date detection to prevent future dates from being selected, and improved the amount detection to avoid displaying absurd amounts.

- Enhanced the error reporting when your device refuses to write a file to disk, for instance when your storage is full.

Nothing fancy in Genius Scan 7.11, but we've tackled a lot of small annoyances that together enhance the overall app experience. Thanks to everyone who reported issues.

Bug fixes

- Fixed an issue where Genius Cloud synchronization would not start immediately after logging in or signing up, ensuring seamless syncing of your documents.
- Fixed some incorrect translations.

In Genius Scan 7.10, we have addressed several long-standing feature requests that will significantly enhance your user experience, particularly for those with more advanced business needs.

New Document Name Template Editor

Document name templates are a powerful feature of Genius Scan, allowing you to customize how your documents are named and create distinct naming patterns.

With document name templates, you can modify the date format used in your document titles, include a client's name in all your document names, or even specify a location.

We have completely overhauled the new document name template editor, making it easier to create templates through drag-and-drop functionality, resulting in a more streamlined user experience.

You can access the new editor in the Settings menu under General > Document Name Templates.

Auto-Crop Imported Documents

When importing scans from your Photos, Genius Scan will now automatically crop any detected document. This means that if you snap a document with your device's camera and then import it in Genius Scan, it will be cropped automatically, saving you quite a few taps. Auto-crop on import is on by default, but you can toggle it off if desired.

Support for Dropbox Team Folders

Genius Scan now offers support for Dropbox Team Folders, a feature that enables business teams to easily share documents with a group of people. You can now export documents directly to Dropbox Team Folders.

Genius Scan 7.5 comes with a brand-new widget that lets you start scanning directly from your Lock Screen or your Home Screen.

New scan edit panel

Genius Scan 7.4 comes with a brand new scan edit panel. When viewing your document, tap the Edit button to reveal it. This new panel provides the same functionality as the previous toolbar but is more intuitive and flexible to make room for future scan editing features (stay tuned!)

New export screen

We know you always export your documents in the same way. So we cleaned up the export screen to move the export settings out of the way (while making them more self-explanatory) and give more room to your export destinations.

Document type detection

If you scan a receipt or a business card, Genius Scan will automatically detect the document type and suggest specific actions such as exporting in the appropriate format or specific editing options.

Expense reporting

If you have been scanning receipts with Genius Scan, you know you're getting a high-quality digital copy of your documents, making it perfect for attaching them to an expense report.

We thought that we shouldn't stop there. So, with Genius Scan 7.4, we're introducing automated PDF/Excel expense reports.

As you scan your receipts, Genius Scan automatically identifies them and extracts the relevant details (such as the date, merchant, amount, currency, …). It also categorizes them automatically. You can then review and edit these details at will. Once you're ready, you can tap the export button, and you will be able to export the receipts with an attached Excel or PDF expense report.

You can also customize your expense reports by adding your name, your company's name or a VAT number. You can also add additional fields to your report (typically, in some countries, you may want to add a VAT column) or changing the available categories.

We designed this feature to be lightweight and fit into your existing workflow. No need to create an account or convince your boss or accountant to subscribe to a new service.

Misc

- When selecting photos in the photo picker, Genius Scan now displays in which order the photos will be imported.
- Add an option to customize the default email subject prefix (by default, it's [Scan]).

Enhanced

- Document creation now happens in the background when exporting, making your export process a tad faster! This doesn't seem quite a big change but was somewhat of an engineering challenge, so we're quite happy to offer this improvement.

- Fix issue where an export shortcut to OneDrive or Evernote would still prompt for the folder/notebook during export.
- Don't show ”Pending auto-export” for a document when no auto-export rule applies. Instead we show ”Changed since last export” to let you know you may want to manually export your document.
- Preven crashes if your device has trouble handling heavy image processing. Instead, you will see an error and you can reach out to us for help.

- Fix issue resulting in Evernote exports getting stuck and preventing other exports from making progress.

Improved

- Make it easier to contact us in case of a Genius Cloud synchronization error. Our support is always available, and we're happy to help. Never hesitate to contact us!

- Allow selecting shared folders when exporting to OneDrive.

Fixed

- Properly index restored documents with Spotlight to make sure they are searchable in Genius Scan. At any time, you can re-index your documents in Settings > General > Advanced > Reindex all documents with Spotlight.

This update introduces an additional fix to recover recent documents that disappeared when updating to Genius Scan 7.0.9.

If you are potentially affected by this issue, you will see a prompt to recover your documents. Just follow the instructions, and Genius Scan will reinstate your missing scans.

Subscriptions

Let's get the elephant out of the room first.

Genius Scan's premium features are now unlocked with a subscription. This slight change in our business model will help us support the ever-growing number of features available in Genius Scan, as well as our team. However:

- If you are on the free version of Genius Scan (we call it Genius Scan Basic), it stays free and fully functional forever. We're not removing anything from the free version. We're truly happy that Genius Scan helps such a large number of people throughout the world.
- If you purchased Genius Scan+ in the past, you will benefit from all its associated features forever without any additional payment, and you will keep benefiting from any new premium features added to the Genius Scan Plus plan.
- If you are already subscribed to Genius Cloud, you will be automatically upgraded to the Genius Scan Ultra subscription, which includes Genius Cloud and additional features designed for our most advanced users.

Folders

You can now sort your documents in folders. While you could already organize documents with tags, many of you were interested in arranging them in a hierarchy of folders.

Business-card recognition

With Genius Scan+, you've always benefited from a pretty good business card recognition. In Genius Scan 7, we take the business card recognition further and simplify it. If Genius Scan detects a business card, it shows a button to let you create a contact with a single tap.

Multi-account for exporting

Genius Scan 7 lets you create multiple export accounts for each cloud service. For example, you can now have both your personal and professional Dropbox accounts configured in Genius Scan to export to either of them based on your needs. Box, Dropbox, FTP, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Microsoft OneNote, and WebDAV support multi-accounts.

Scan auto-orientation

Genius Scan will detect if you scan a document sideways and automatically rotate it upright. This intelligent feature is handy when scanning landscape documents while holding your device flat.

Offloading/Space saver

With a Genius Cloud account, Genius Scan 7 saves space on your device by offloading rarely accessed documents to the cloud. You can disable this behavior if you prefer to maintain all your files available offline.

iOS Shortcuts

Genius Scan 7 serves a new Scan to Clipboard iOS shortcut, letting you use the Genius Scan scanning technology as part of your shortcuts. For instance, you can configure a shortcut where you scan a document with Genius Scan, get the results from the clipboard and then process it further as part of iOS Shortcuts.

EXPORT SHORTCUTS

With export shortcuts, you can export directly to a given folder from a cloud service in a single tap.

AUTO-EXPORT RULES

Conditional auto-exports allow you trigger auto-exports only if the document name or tags match a specific string.

AUTO-DELETE

For both export shortcuts or auto-export rules, you can setup auto-deletion. This lets you automatically delete the document as soon as it has been successfully exported. This is ideal if you are scanning confidential information and don't want it to stay on the phone more than necessary. Be careful, though, once the document has been automatically deleted there is no way to recover it.

TEXT RECOGNITION (OCR)

Text recognition is now more reliable, and you can directly see the recognized text by tapping on the Text Recognition button rather than having to export the document first. It's also easier to start the text recognition for old documents by just tapping on the Text Recognition button in the document itself.

TAGGING

When adding a tag to a document, tag suggestions above the keyboard will intelligently auto-complete.

SIRI SHORTCUTS
We love the Siri Shortcuts! We've added two different types of shortcuts: the ability to start a scan with a shortcut, and the ability to view any document. If you open a document in Genius Scan, this will automatically surface the corresponding shortcut in Siri Shortcuts in the Settings app (or in Spotlight if iOS deems this action relevant). You can easily create a Siri shortcut such as "View passport" if you travel a lot.

FULLSCREEN MODE
When viewing your documents, a single tap will switch the screen to fullscreen mode, hiding the toolbars and using all the available space to display your documents. You may benefit from this if you use Genius Scan to read documents such as music scores, magazines etc.

CROP SCREEN
In the "crop" screen that lets you edit the area of the document you want to crop, you now have the ability to let Genius Scan automatically detect the document. This will be useful if you import documents from the photo library.

SAVED PASSWORDS
Genius Scan integrates with iCloud Keychain to let you log in easily in your Genius Cloud account accross all your devices and on the web app.

IMPROVEMENTS AND BUG FIXES
