سميت بزيارة الأربعين لأن وقتها يوم العشرين من صفر فيكون أربعين يوما من مقتل الحسين عليه السلام في العاشر من المحرم وهو اليوم الذي ورد فيه جابر بن عبد الله الأنصاري من المدينة إلى كربلاء لزيارة قبر الحسين عليه السلام فكان أول من زاره من الناس وفي هذا اليوم أيضاً كان رجوع حرم الحسين عليه السلام من الشام إلى كربلاء مرة أخرى بقيادة الإمام زين العابدين عليه السلام فالتقى بجابر عليه السلام.
