About Comply Chain

Child and forced labor in supply chains present serious and material risks to companies and industries. To help mitigate these risks, the U.S. Department of Labor presents Comply Chain: Business Tools for Labor Compliance in Global Supply Chains.
The app targets companies and industry groups seeking to develop robust social compliance systems for their global production. Comply Chain provides a practical, step-by-step guide critical elements of social compliance, and is designed for companies that do not have a social compliance system in place or those needing to strengthen their existing systems. An integrated social compliance system includes: engaging stakeholders and partners, assessing risks and impacts, developing a code of conduct, communicating and training across the supply chain, monitoring compliance, remediating violations, independent review, and reporting performance and engagement. The app contains many examples of specific good practices that companies, industry groups, and multi-stakeholder initiatives have put in place in these eight areas.

Comply Chain is now available for the first time in Malay – to complement the existing English, French, and Spanish versions. Malay is a common language across South-East Asia spoken by nearly 300 million people in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, as well as parts of Thailand. This new translation allows for a wider adoption of Comply Chain, which can help drive government and private sector action to address child labor and forced labor. Comply Chain is linked to ILAB’s List of Goods Produced with Child Labor of Forced Labor and this List has focused considerable attention on forced labor in Malay speaking countries in recent years. The List includes electronics, garment, and rubber gloves produced by forced labor in Malaysia, in addition to palm oil produced by child labor and forced labor. Other goods on the List in Indonesia include fish and palm oil for both child labor and forced labor; and footwear, gold, rubber, tin, and tobacco for child labor. In Thailand, the List includes fish for forced labor; garments and shrimp for child labor, forced labor, and forced child labor; and pornography and sugarcane for child labor.

Now included are more than 50 examples from business associations, companies, international organizations, and multi-actor partnerships, among others. The updated app also features recent legal developments and further information about topics like responsible recruitment to ensure that hiring practices protect workers, worker voice to encourage and empower workers to speak out against exploitation, and strengthening existing reporting to enable it to speak to all of a company’s stakeholders.
