About Lead Screen Guide
Lead Screen presents guidance for clinicians on lead poisoning screening in children based upon the New York State Department of Health guideline of October, 2011. It puts at your fingertips information on whom to screen, how to screen, what to do with various levels of blood lead level test results, signs & symptoms of lead poisoning, lead exposure risk factors, assessment for elevated levels, and a discussion of variations among guidelines on this topic.
The app addresses such common questions as:
- what are the indications for lead screening?
- how can I screen for other children who warrant blood lead level testing?
- how do I manage a blood lead level of 4, 13, or 57?
- should I act any differently on fingerstick lead levels versus venous lead levels?
- if I find a child with elevated lead, what special history, physical, and workup should I do?
- what do the major national organizations recommend for childhood lead screening, such as CDC, AAP, and USPSTF?
This app is written and intended for practicing clinicians who provide primary care for children including pediatricians, family physicians, nurses, PA's and NP's; for resident physician trainees; and for medical students. The app was prepared in collaboration with the Broome County Department of Health, Broome County, NY. As an educator and clinician, I am interested in feedback and I would be grateful for guidance on improving this guide.
