Katsushika Hokusai was one of the greatest Ukiyoe artists in Edo period in Japan. He began painting from around the age of six, and he never stopped painting till he died at the age of 89. In his later life, he called himself "The old man mad about art", and said "If I could live another five years, I could be a real painter."
"Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji" is one of his most famous works. It was not only popular in Japan, but also had a great impact on Western artists, especially French Impressionists in the late 19th century. "Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji" actually consists of 46 prints. The first 36 prints of Mt. Fuji sold very well, and due to their popularity, he was asked to add ten more prints to the original 36 prints.
