The term “default” originally means to fail (from Old French “defaute”). In software, default values are fallback values for when the user has ‘failed’ to input a value.
Maybe this negative connotation is why on macOS settings were never called defaults but “preferences”.

The term "cloud" comes from the Old English word "clod", which originally denoted a heap or hill of stones. Because rain clouds look like huge piles of rocks in the sky, the term "clod" was used as a metaphor and over time replaced the older term "weolcan".
