About Statehood for Washington, DC
Let every voice count by making Washington, DC the 51st state! There are over 700,000 Americans living in the nation’s capital without a vote in Congress. This is a historic injustice that has persisted for far too long and must end. Use this app to get involved – even if you don’t live in Washington, DC!
If you live in any of the 50 states, you have one member in the US House of Representatives and two Senators who represent your voice with a vote in Congress. Americans living in Washington, DC have been fighting for the same full and equal representation for over 200 years, since DC was founded.
In 2016, 86% of DC voters approved an advisory referendum in support statehood; yet nearly 80% of all Americans are unaware. DC’s population is larger than 2 states (Vermont and Wyoming); and DC residents pay more in federal income taxes per capita than residents in any other state. The fact that people living in DC meet all of the requirements of American citizenship but are treated differently is not a Democratic or Republican issue, but a civil rights issue.
We have set a bold path forward to make Washington, DC the 51st State. To date, the Washington, DC Admission Act has received a record level of support, and we hope to leverage this momentum in 2019 as we continue to push forward with the new 116th Congress. This must be a collective effort, and we need your help spreading the message so we can finally bring an end to this civil rights injustice.
