《现代汉语词典》由中国社会科学院语言研究所编纂，著名语言学家吕叔湘、丁声树曾先后主持工作，由商务印书馆出版，书名题签由郭沫若先生完成。
词典1956年由国家立项，1958年6月正式开编，1960年印出“试印本”征求意见，1965年印出“试用本”送审稿，1973年内部发行，1978年正式发行第一版。
2012年，经过2008年开始的第五次修订工作，《现代汉语词典》第六版出版。
《现代汉语词典》是我国第一部规范性的语文词典。这部词典以规范性、科学性和实用性为主要特点，在社会主义文化建设中发挥了重要作用，深受广大读者欢迎，在海内外享有很高声誉，先后荣获国家图书奖、中国社会科学院优秀科研成果奖和国家辞书奖。[1]
