The municipality is the seat of the Virgen de Candelaria, patron saint of the Canary Islands, which is why it is also called Villa Mariana de Candelaria. It is considered the sacred and pilgrimage place par excellence of the archipelago. Every February 2 and August 14 and 15, thousands of pilgrims from all the islands arrive at Villa Mariana to celebrate the patron saint's feast in the so-called "walk to Candelaria". The municipality has great importance, not only religious, but also historical, since the Guanche and Castilian cultures were united around the image of the Virgin.
