In demographics, the world population is the total number of humans currently living. As of January 2017 statistic, it was estimated at 7.48 billion. The United Nations estimates it will further increase to 11.2 billion in the year 2100.
It took hundreds of thousands of years for the world population to grow to 1 billion – then in just another 200 years or so, it grew sevenfold. In 2011 year, the global population reached the 7 billion mark, and today estimation, it stands at about 7.5 billion with daily average 385 000 babies birth and 158 000 human death every day.
This dramatic growth has been driven largely by increasing numbers of children surviving to reproductive age, and has been accompanied by major changes in fertility rates, increasing urbanization and accelerating migration. These trends will have far-reaching implications for generations to come.
Nowadays China and India remain the two largest countries in the world, each with more than 1 billion people, representing 19 and 18 % of the world’s population, respectively. But by 2022, the population of India is expected to surpass that of China.
