ABOUT MY ALCOHOL USE APP -
ADMINISTRATION:
The assessment can be administered by a staff person, or self-administered. Self-administration takes only a few minutes to complete.
After all questions have been answered, the screen displays an ID field and a Results button. Anything can be entered in the ID field, depending on organizational standard (name, patient ID, or whatever). This field is required, and results will not display until after something is entered, and tapping the Results button.
SHARING RESULTS:
Results can be emailed, texted, printed, or saved. Available resources are displayed by tapping the Share button. Caution: If the Share option is not utilized, the assessment results will be permanently discarded once the app is closed or the Start Over button is tapped.
Similarities/Differences Between Assessments:
There are two assessments, Assessment A and B. Both are based on 11 DSM criteria, 10 of which are identical, with only one difference. Assessment A is based on DSM 5, and includes a criterion for alcohol craving. Assessment B is based on DSM IV, and covers alcohol-related legal problems, instead.
Both assessments include 45 questions, 40 of which are identical, and cover the same diagnostic criteria. Assessment A includes 5 questions related to alcohol craving, and Assessment B includes 5 questions about alcohol-related legal problems.
SCORING DIFFERENCES:
ASSESSMENT A:
Assessment A counts 1 for each criterion that has 1 or more “Yes” response to criterion-related questions.
Assessment Scoring:
0-1 = Alcohol Use Disorder: None
2-3 = Alcohol Use Disorder: Mild
3-4 = Alcohol Use Disorder: Moderate
6+ = Alcohol Use Disorder: Severe
ASSESSMENT B:
Assessment B also counts 1 for each criterion that has 1 or more “Yes” response; but separates the criteria into Abuse and Dependence categories. Criteria 1-4 relate to Alcohol Abuse, while criteria 5-11 relate to Alcohol Dependence.
Prior Alcohol Dependence Diagnosis:
There is also an item that relates to a prior dependence diagnosis having been given. If answered “yes,” Alcohol Abuse is ruled out as a result, with the possibility of Alcohol Dependence if dependence criteria are currently met. If dependence criteria are not fully met, the result shows that a prior dependence diagnosis was received, with current criteria not fully met. This type of result could reflect continued recovery/remission if both current abuse and dependence scores = 0; or relapse if either score = 1 or more.
Assessment Scoring:
Alcohol Abuse = 1-4
Alcohol Dependence = 3-7
Prior Dependence = 1
Score Display for BOTH Assessments:
Assessment Scores:
Scores for both assessments are displayed as division, e.g., 3/7. The number on the left represents the score, and the number on the right equals the total criteria possible.
