We’re calling Version 12 of the VoiceMap app “Rome” because we developed it to solve the problem of visiting the Vatican Museums.
This treasure trove, collected by one pope after the other, for centuries, has 54 galleries linking 1,400 rooms with 20,000 items on display. It’s a lot to take in over a single afternoon. Then, at the end, when you’ve been overwhelmed into a tired, footsore resignation, you arrive at the crowning masterpiece: Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel.
Our solution combines inspiring, insightful content that extends your attention span with a new interface for indoor tours that helps you make informed choices about how you spend your time and energy.
Here’s what you’ll find:
• Locations are grouped into digestible sections, like chapters breaking up a book. Each section has a total audio time and labels like “Essential” and “Optional” to help you decide what to see.
• Clear navigation along a suggested route with text directions that slide in when you need them followed by a photo of where you need to be next.
• Tap “I’m Here” when you’re ready – or don’t, and choose “Skip Location” instead to get directions to the next point on your route.
• There’s also a "Dig Deeper" button for locations that go beyond the basics, letting you pick what interests you most.
• From start to finish, you’ll see your progress through the tour as a whole on a bar at the top of the screen.
• Just below the progress bar, there’s a carousel displaying every location on the tour grouped into sections. It shows you what you’ve listened to already, and helps you tell whether an optional section just ahead has two locations or twenty.
• You can use the new section menu to browse through the tour, with summaries to help you decide what you want to make time for as well as what might be best left for another day.
• Or you can listen with your feet up whenever you like with Virtual Playback. This turns the tour into something you can take in like a podcast or audio book.
• Some locations have multiple photos, and we’ve added pinch to zoom so you can get in close and see the finer details.
• If you’re running out of time, or energy, but you’re still trying to take in as much as you can, you can adjust the playback speed to get through things a little faster, at a higher pitch.

• Bug fixes for wishlisting, to make sure your don’t lose your bookmarks when you aren’t signed into the app.
• A significant upgrade to how we collect feedback on tours, including the option to edit your ratings and an easy way to submit App Store reviews.
• New price tiers for tours.

VoiceMap crossed a few milestones in 2023: 1,000 tours in March, for instance, then 500,000 app installs and 30,000 tour ratings a few months later. In total, our community of independent travellers and curious locals spent over 100,000 hours doing VoiceMap tours last year, and after all that time out and about, exploring, you had feedback – bug reports, sometimes, but also feature requests and helpful suggestions.
Version 11 of the app, which we’ve dubbed Kyoto, is a response to some of that feedback. It includes:
• Wishlisting, so that you can bookmark tours when you’re planning a regional trip or working through what’s available close to home. Your wishlist syncs across devices, in the app or on the web, using your VoiceMap account.
• An option to increase audio playback speeds by 1.25x, 1.5x and 2x. This is experimental, because we use Mapmaker to carefully match up audio times and the travel times between locations, but the runners in our community want to move 2x faster and that only works if the audio is also 2x faster.
• A redesigned library to help you sort between the tours you’ve wishlisted, or purchased, or downloaded so they’re ready to use offline.
If you have feedback or a request of your own, get in touch. Version 11 is full of new features, but it’s also proof that we listen.

If you've reopened VoiceMap after not using it for a while and found yourself looking at an empty Explore screen, instead of a selection of tours, 10.1.2 should fix this. VoiceMap is at its best when you’re immersed in new surroundings, with your screen off, because the serendipity of GPS playback can seem like magic. But version 10, codenamed Athens*, is about what you’re doing when your screen is on, especially if you’re looking at your tour’s map.
Improvements in VoiceMap Athens include:
• Beautiful offline maps that make it easy to navigate at a glance. The tour’s route line updates as you move now, to show your progress, and our new location pins make automatic playback more intuitive.
• Granular controls for VoiceMap users who know their way around. You can turn off the pause alert in Settings, for example. We’ll also preserve your zoom level when locations play automatically.
• Location scripts and text directions are built into version 10’s redesigned tour player. Just pull them up as you go to scan for details you might have missed listening to the audio.
• Directions to the tour’s starting point are easier to access, and you can tap a button to open turn-by-turn directions in Apple Maps, Google Maps or Waze. If you stop a tour and resume it later, VoiceMap now stores exactly where you left off and gives you navigation options to get back there too.
• Leaving comments is less fiddly. We spent time on this because we want to hear from more of you – and so do our tour publishers, who love hearing that you joined them for a walk.
* We’re releasing VoiceMap 10 not long after reaching an important milestone: 1,000 tours. We crossed over from 999 when we published a walk around the Ancient Agora in Athens, following in the footsteps of Socrates.
